Trying to figure out the logistics of how this happened. No longer are cars made where they can be started in gear without the clutch depressed (as far as I know). Therefore he must've either started the GT 350R in neutral and shifted to reverse by accident and let go the clutch or he started it in first gear with the clutch depressed and spontaneously let the clutch up.
It almost sounded like he said, "I did it, I did it!" with excitement. Had to watch a few times.
That's what I thought he said at first as well. No, quite clearly, he knows he's dead. It was a Ferris Bueller moment for him. Dad's car without a doubt.

Most likely scenario IMO.
Parents, just like your Guns, you don't leave the Keys to Cars like this where any one can get their hands on them. Just as much Dad's Fault.
Also the parents responsibility to raise trustworthy children.To me ,as a father.that is maybe the most important quality.
A lack of parenting is it's own reward..
I have a 2016 Mustang GT with the same shifter.
To put the car in reverse, you have to lift up on the metal ring below the shift knob in order to get to the far left reverse location. Everyone, and I mean everyone, puts the car in 1st gear the first time you drive it and think it is in reverse because they don't know about lifting the metal ring. If you don't see the back up camera image on the touch screen, you are not in reverse, you are in first gear.
This was a simple mistake that is easily made, and was made by myself the first several times I drove my car.
I wonder how often people make this mistake with similar results.Good for body and paint industry. :o
Probably happens all the time. I feather the clutch on any car I am unfamiliar with the first time. He let the clutch out way too fast. Whoops!

Don't surprise me at all. Most (I'd say 75%+)teens will respond:
1) "Duh, what is a stick shift, or straight drive, or 4-speed", and "Why should I need to learn how to drive a stick shift"??
2) And when he's 16 yr old says, " I don't want my driver's license".
I have 2 nephews that are 21 and 23 and have NO interest in getting their driver's license and could care less.
Just the generation gap I reckon ::)
