There were 2 Krates

Apple Krate
Orange Krate

Then one of original 3 was the Lemon Peeler. They debuted in December '67 as '68 models.

The Pea Picker was added in late 1968 as a '69 model

In 1970 they added the Cotton picker and Gray Ghost late in '70 as a '71 model year Both had limited run times and today are quite rare because of that.

Front fenders were added late in '68. Rear disc brakes were a '72 model year option. Shifter handles changed over the 6 years of production.

1973 was the last year they were available.

Mon ami... more colors available:

The popular Schwinn Krate bikes were produced from 1968 until 1972. Originally, the Krate bikes were offered in 6 colors. The first three colors were introduced in 1968. They were the Orange Krate, the Apple Krate (Red), and the Lemon Peeler (Yellow). These three continued to be available for all five model years. The Pea Picker (Green) was introduced in 1969 and continued for all remaining model years. The Cotton Picker (White) had a 2 year run in 1970 and 1971. The rarest of them all was the Grey Ghost which was produced only in 1971. Only 6 colors made up the Original Krate collection.

Then in 1999 Schwinn started to make fakearoo (like some SAAC members accounts) Shwinn krates.....

Will post some of ours when we head back to Miami

A Krate is to a StingRay what a Shelby is to a Mustang.

Bottom line is a Krate is/was built on a 20" StingRay frame.

Kinda sorta, it's like a Mustang and a  Mustang Shelby

We have a few volumes of Ignaz Shwinn and his buddy Arnold's creations

Heres a quick read

A Grey Ghost is like a 67 427/435 Vette.

A lot more exist today than we're originally ever made.

I have a few schwinn Stingrays they all have original paint and tires unrestored. One is a 73 Lemon Peeler with rear disc brake, one is a 67 Rams Horn, the other is a Green 67 Regular Stingray with the original slick like I had when I was young. Also a basically brand new 1974 that was a one owner they never used with the original paperwork.

I have a few as well. My '73 Apple Krate was my dream bike from 1970-1975. They were $129 depending on options.

My parents paid $500 for their '65 Impala SS so $129 was not going to happen. I first started earning money in 1975 so my first bike ended up being a Schwinn LeTour

212 you have some great looking bikes. I would like to have a original paint apple krate or orange krate if you have one to sell. I also have a 1947 Whizzer all original with great patina.

I do have a Trio of 1968 Krates in over the top condition. The Orange and Apple are original, only the Lemon was repainted by a previous owner.

All Date code correct. These were the original 3 Krates released in the first year.

I would consider selling the 3 as a package. They are in incredible condition. My best Apple is NOS, never been ridden. I do have another that is a rider I want to keep and a 3rd that has OK paint, but needs to be reassembled with fresh cables, tuned etc. I wouldn't paint it, but it needs work. I would sell that one if I guy wanted to doll it up.

You are the Krate guy. Man those are some good looking bikes. I'm like you I still get excited looking at those things. It all goes back to what we all wanted when we were young it went from bikes to motorcycles to cars and women fell in there somewhere.

LOL!

I think it was a generational thing about growing up in the 60's and 70's.

Teens today see it as an ailment.    ;D

They're like cars most got well used and abused, I know we beat ours up, I learned to paint working on mine, it was green and I painted it black and lace painted the chain guard then I put chopper forks on it.  luckily there were some people that didn't like to ride and theirs got put in a corner and sold at yard sales years down the road.

What about the bikes that actually have a direct connection to the cars we love?

Phil Remington even is purported to have lent his engineering skills to these.

Fantastic picture. Puts the size of the bike in perspective. Pretty lady helps too.

With the rear caliper brake, white seat, front fender and 90 degree bend shifter would lead me to believe the Krate is a very late '68 or early'69.

Since I was involved in the beginning of bicycle moto x I will throw this out there that no one wanted a HUFFY. The kids usually ended up with one because of price. I ended up with a standard STING RAY and with its 42-16 gear ratio I could haul ass but most of us wanted quick drag race performance so my Dad promptly changed to a 36 front sprocket and my need for speed or acceleration had begun. The krates were kool but they got out run all the time because you needed to hold the bars tight and lean forward to get your acceleration up ;D You CANT do that and shift gears quickly but they were a great cruiser! The Yamaha moto bike was a Sherman tank of a vehicle and needed a big kid like a teen ager to get it going, these weighed probably 45- 50 pounds with the likes of the aluminum moto mags, how totally cool!. Generations have passed and my kids became BMX champions on bicycles that weighed in the 10-12 lb range. Today my grand kids bikes are in the 8.5- 10 lb range. The engine becomes much more powerful when the lbs come off. ;D

Legend has it that Schwinn employed Mario Gusipie Costantini for three days in 1969 while he was in the witness protection plan after eloping with 12 year old Patty Von Helsing  in a heinous crime known as the "Snatch Heist".

In those three days Mario worked at Schwinn, he was assigned to a top secret project known only as "Purple Paradox."

Few people were entrusted with the secret of Purple Paradox, but my cousin's nephews's barber's dentist's undertaker was one of the three people given their pre-demo, pre-built Grape Krate.

He later gave it to his son's florist's pool boy Michael Felts!

Now this gets really weird, according to some, one evening in the Fall of 1969 Mike  was peddling recklessly and ran into a telephone pole on Sunset Boulevard.

After inspecting the damage, Mike  wandered off on foot to a favorite bar for the rest of the night.

When Mike  returned, the bike was gone.

Person of interest to this day is renown bicycle connoisseur and concurs judge  P. W. Herman

Looking at these really cool bikes brought back some of my first customizing and racing thoughts! First to come off were the streamers, then the chrome fenders. Racing anything... dont need no stinking chrome.  ;D Then the chain guard , had many chewed up and greasy right leg pant cuffs, then the grab handle on the sissy bar. Cut it off just above the seat bolt holes then beat it down flat and tucked them in under the seat so I could jump off curbs without thinking  about it hitting my legs while preparing for a short flight off some curbs or man made wood ramps. That was alot of coolness for an 8-9 year old at the time. Now I needed DADS help to make it faster, it was so damned hard to peddle with that front 44 tooth sprocket. What to do ? Dad had the fix and off with the 44 and on with the 36 :D felt like I went from a 3.00 peg leg to a set of 4.11 trac loc, Then we went down and got a 2 speed kick back rearend coaster brake... A boy with a penchant for speed became a street racer right then and there. Thanks for taking me down memory lane FANTASTIC-

Exactly the stuff we did growing up. I will admit, I don't think any of us caught that much air in our jumps. Helmets? We didn't need no stinking helmets.

Can you imagine that happening in today's safety obsessed, litigious society?   :-\

We cut the legs off a wooden picnic table and jump the Old Lady neighbors clothes line. The whole layout was on a downhill grade. Didn't take a lot of momentum to jump easily. Had a helper piece of plywood so the transition going up the ramp wasn't  so damn jarring,LOL!!

Great shot of a kid that was a good handler. We did the same and to be politically correct we had to jump a certain distance multiple times to get your distance before we lined up under the jumper. The better riders with stock gearing on a sting ray could get 25- 30 feet out of a jump on the sidewalk. Anything seemed ok if we were on the sidewalk, no street riding... Go figure. No one ever hit a wall, fence, neighbors cars etc. GOOD TIMES!

I didnt want to mention that modification but us left coasters built those with our fathers 3/4 inch EMT that is used for running electrical wiring. A couple of well placed hits with a ball peen hammer and a couple of 3/8 bolts and we became Peter Fonda of easy rider fame in about 20 minutes, We was supafly. ;D

Listen we know the feeling of popping a wheelie and coming down,  having the forks come off and sticking in the dirt

Or better yet popping a wheelie on a hill with a original 90 pound Phantom and breaking the spring and fork...yikes

Do you remember using those headlights?

They typically ran on a big D cell battery. They stayed bright for all of about 10 minutes.

If you needed a real light, you had to get the ugly generator and string the ugly wires along the frame. :P

I had the same setup.  And a speedometer to see how fast we could go down steep hills.   I pegged the 40 mph gauge with my friend sitting behind me, on a very steep hill, which was scary fun.

Since we are talking about our early beginnings and bikes, I remember thinking bikes are quiet and boring it needs some noise! clothes pins and playing cards to the rescue and depending of the placement of the card you could get a mild sounding engine sound or if you doubled it up you had the toughest sounding bike on the block. There was a down side to this engine sound activity, it would loosen the spokes so much the bike became wobbly ;D and no one knew how to true a wheel? Who cared when you had the coolest bike on the block back then. Just had a little flash back 50 years ago.

Two ways to make them loud:

Common folks put baseball cards in spokes

The rich ones got vroom motors from mom and dad

You know how many rookie cards i executed ???

Most kids of the time had the high riser bars. We called them APE HANGERS , and seemed like the best fit for our little hands. You could get great acceleration if you gripped the bars right at the bend then when up to speed they were very comfortable to grip lower down on the grips. AHHH GOOD TIMES! ;D

Make either of those two 5-speed Fastbacks black, and that was my ride in 5th grade. Until it got stolen from the school bike racks.

After that, I was back to riding my old Stingray with the springer shock on the front and the coaster brake.  Not as cool.

I built one similar to this back in the day ( 69-70? ). I used several sets of forks cut and slide one into the next set and welded. Not nearly as much rake as the one in the photo. Cool but handled like S**T. I scraped those forks real soon. Then built one that had a mono shock rear suspension. I think Yamaha stole My idea.

LOL, Yea we built the chopper bikes in a regular since though ;D

My older Brother did do a chopper with the original forks in the original position then fitted the add on forks in the opposite direction. Actually worked quite well but we lived on a 1/2 mile dirt/some gravel driveway and of course wiping out was routine :o

So we'd end up slowly getting to main paved road, then it was on!! Down to the swimming hole 8)

We'll always remember those days, I cherish mine Constantly ;)

LOVE IT!

I used to ride my Chopper "no hands" all the time, seeing that reminded me of that!!!!

I did that with a cheap 10 speed got up to 55, the speedometer looked just like that but a different name (Hurrnt?) How stupid that was!

Holy mother of schwinn stingrays !

A few things come to mind:

Glad the bearings held up

Glad no one opened a car door or pulled out in front of him

Glad that those tiny brakes where not used in "panic mode"

Glad those tires did not delaminate ( most of the old stingrays I have seen still have 50 year old original tires on them  at least mine do)

Glad he had a good grip and control of the complete roller coaster ride

Lastly to the bike and rider, HUZ- ZAH !

Does anyone here know who built their knock-off Schwinns?

Why yes my good man !

Huffman Manufacturing Company
a.k.a.
Huffy Bicycles

Huffman purchased YLCE (Yorba Linda Cycle Enterprises) and converted that Southern California company to a national service company, assembling bicycles and other products for mass merchants such as KMart, Target, Zayres and Sears

That's "really bitchin", as we used to say.

Best I ever did was 46 mph on my 5-speed Stingray, with my buddy on the back, down a steep hill that teed into Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach.

Scarier than I intended.  Definitely stupider.

The caliper style "brake pads" overheated and melted themselves onto the rim lips as I attempted to stop.  We had considerably more momentum than my 12-year-old brain had considered.  Barely got 'er stopped (by dragging our feet too) before anything bad happened.

Once was enough of that.

This Huffy is very close to what I had, except mine was red (including the fenders), and the chain guard was larger. The name 'Hitch Hiker' was in black letters with the thumb up logo.

Alright alright alright,  you had me thinking a lot so I contacted a buddy of mine who has  a bike shop.  Mike says the only HITCHHIKER name he has ever come across was a Schwinn monstrosity that you would hook up to a normal bike and turn it into a tandem or a two seater bike

Here's my Muscle Bike
Purchased April 1975, in September 77 it's had 29,000 miles on it, now has 31,000
Not the typical bike you're talking about but when it was new it was one of the fastest production motorcycles ever made

Thanks for sharing that with us

Been thinking of starting a motor bike and mini bike post

Again thank you

Sorry, no. It WAS a Huffy 'HitchHiker'. Like I mentioned, I never seen another one like it. 'Maybe' it was a California only regional promotional special(?). Whatever the case, I know what I had. My parents bought it for me around 1972-'73 (when I was 5-6 years old), and it was stolen around 1975-'76.

crossboss, that sounds like it would have been a cool ride !

There are a number of forums out there on this type of  bike, here's one on Schwinns, they might come up with something.

We have consulted with the world renowned Doctor. Francis Tumblety    , PhD, who is a professor of psychology at Falafala College and a licensed psychologist. Dr Tumblety believes you may be suffering from a case of "french vanilla nostalgia ala venti" where one think someting happened but it did not.

Our further research shows that the only "HITCHHIKER" found in the 72 73 era was an exquisite film by that name but certainly, no HUFFY bike

Thanks for giving us a time line on your age 55/56 as my buddy Mike had placed you as a child of the early 1900s thinking you rode one of these bikes possibly a HITCHHIKER.....

Got my first Schwinn Sting Ray for my b-day, 1965.  Red with the springer front end and "Slik" rear tire.

Later, a black Fastback 5-speed stick. High speed (skinny) tires like on a ten-speed, but in 20-inch.  Was Stolen at school...6th grade.

Then, a green 5-speed stick to replace it. Not a Fastback.  Rode it until I got my driver's license.

The Fastback was the best.
