Title: How many cars per day were produced at S-A in '66 and '67?
Post by: Side-Oilers on May 08, 2020, 03:34:12 PM
Reading everyone's excellent sleuthing of the French film at S-A shot in March '66, it makes me wonder:

On an average day, with no major screw-ups or parts delays, how many cars rolled off the line per day in '66 and '67?

Take the total production for each year divided by the number of work days during the production year(~260) for a rough average.

Thanks, I figured that would give an approximate.

I'm curious if any of the diligent historians here has a daily production sheet, or similar doc.

A little laborious, for 65s (which isn't what you asked about  :o) the registry lists this info by car. The numbers all all over the place! An SFM car can be turned out on the same day as another SFM number over 100 VINs apart. Perhaps by 67 or the  66 Hertz cars it was a more rational operation (?) haven't dug that far, but the data is there in the registry.

65's required more time for the GT350 conversion.  It wasn't until April of '65 that SA started hitting their stride with GT350 output, with somewhere between 10-20 street cars being completed on work days.  The full conversion time could be days to weeks from the "started" date to the "completed" date.  Unfortunately, the started/completed data is not listed in the '66 registry.  I believe Howard noted that he doesn't have that info.

I think there are some monthly completed totals for '66 and '67's and they varied, as might be expected, based on beginning of the production series and parts to complete on-hand.

Seem to remember reading articles in The Shelby American referencing production meeting notes on Hertz cars completions.

Review of the 2011 SAAC '67 registry would probably be able to provide a good/close total by month as it lists the Shelby completed dates of the cars.

Will look... found these monthly totals that someone gathered (not me) on '67 Shelby's completed at the airport.  Guessing they got these by reading the 2011 Registry, not sure of the accuracy:

1966 Oct = 21
        Nov = 62
        Dec = 89
1967 Jan = 267
        Feb = 221
        Mar = 460
        Apr = 635 653
        May = 588
        Jun = 373
        Jul = 459
        Aug = 8
        Sep = 5
        Oct = 19

If April (the month of highest out-put) had 22 "working days" (30 days minus 8 weekend days) that equates to about 28 29.6 cars a day highest production month average per day.

Correction as per reply below - Thanks Dennis

Thanks guys. That gives me the info I was curious about.

I figured it would not be consistent in the number of completed cars, but that's quite a spread.

  On the 67's, all the body mods and vendor supply played a role in the slow build rate early on.

JD - I just had a chance to check my spreadsheet to verify my numbers against yours. I believe your April number is a typo. We agree on every other month listed. Glad others are tracking this information so that we can share data. I appreciate all your input on these issues.

Thanks,

Dennis

Dennis, was posting what I was sent a few years ago, would like to adjust to be more accurate.

Can you provide a "correction" for April?

Thanks,

JD - No problem, the number that I have is 653. I think you just transposed the numbers.

Hope this helps.

OK, I was just totaling those and came to that conclusion - Thanks, I'll adjust above.

(I should have done that before posting)
