Title: Difference between SAI 013 and 4101 dealer plates?
Post by: TJinSA on August 29, 2020, 02:21:49 PM
In photos, the 013 DLR plates gather so much attention, but the Atzbach collection had a 1B 4101 plate also attributed to the organization.  What was the difference(s) in their application(s)?

I have my suspicions,  but would like a knowledgable answer.

The 13 is a MFG (Manufacturers) plate, the 4101 is a DLR (Dealers) plate.

13 MFG is Shelby American.

4101 DLR is most likely High Performance Motors.

Others will correct if I am in error or add more.

That matches my understanding.

Are those yours? Great finds!

The above photograph was taken on my childhood room's floor  ;)

The set of 1L 013s is one of two matched sets which remain together. The 1A 4101s are the only matched set currently together that I am aware of. Both were purchased from Ed Casey's son. Ed was the east coast sales rep for Shelby American in 1967-69. Before Ed had the 013s, they were run on CSX2323, most notably with Dan Gurney at the wheel at the targa florio.  Today those 013s are riding on the front and back on 2323 once again as it is campaigned in vintage events.

To confirm the above, MFG 013s are Shelby American's plate. The 4101s are Hi Performance Motors Dealer plate. Seeing as HPM as a part of Shelby American, those 4101s were also on rare occasions run on Shelby American race cars.

Kind regards,
Vern

I was a strange kid....every dime went into collecting old car junk  ;D  I wish I had a picture of my room back then, thinking back on it, it was pretty darn cool!

Nowadays all the car junk is at the building...for some reason the wife didnt like the car parts in the living room when she moved in..? Still dont get it?

Now I really do feel like a dumb bunny!... focused too much on the 'dealer' plate and information how many of them there might have been, and do we know to whom they were assigned?

On the MFG plates, what do the two small letter/digits that are stacked vertically on the far left signify?  I see pics of the MFG 013 plates with various combos on the far left. Are they a sequence identifier, so that each pair of two plates are different from other pairs, all within the same manufacturer?

I believe you are correct.  Vern might know more.

1L might be early ones, assuming they started with 1A. On the main mecum.com website, the pic of Shelby's own 427 CSX3178 has 3F MFG 013 plates.

You must have been one cool kid growing up.  What was your first car, a Boss9?  Thanks for the info on these plates.

FYI for the forum, I recently picked up this dealer plate for Downtown Ford.  It hung on a guys wall for years, ever since he left Downtown Ford back in the '70s.  Now I just need a Shelby from Downtown to put it on.

Had four webers on the Cobra intake as a center piece on my dining room table - that was after the divorce...always made me smile!

You must have been one cool kid growing up.

Now Brian lets not make this thread all about me...we've been down that road in the last week or so  ;D

On the plates, yes they started with 1A, 1B, 1C...to Z. Each plate was issued in a pair, front and back. Once they ran out of letters they went to 2A, 2B, 2C etc etc. I know Shelby American had enough plates issued to them to make it into the 3s but I dont believe there were any "4" plates?

In contrast, because Hi Performance Motors was  much smaller concern, they never made it to the 2s and far fewer of those plate were manufactured. Both plates are extremely rare though and original examples of either are at the very top of the food chain when it comes to Shelby related memorabilia

Kind regards,
Vern

Thanks for the explaining about this "Dealer Plate" Thing...

i learn a lot, and i love to learn and go deeper and deeper in the rabbit hole of Shelby Knowledge.

A Question from me ...

i saw a early Pic GT350 with 1Z 013 on the Plate and the ABC has 26 Letters, so it is possible to say
this was the 26.th Street car or one of the first 26 street Cars built ?

for me, as a little Timeline Nerd, it would be a very good chance to date a pic right or possible right.

Thanks a lot

Stephan

The plates that SA used were MFG plates not Dealer plates. The MFG plates do not have any thing to do with the Shelby vin of the car. A MFG got assigned a certain amount of plates to use on their cars . 4,5 ,10 etc. The same plate may be swapped around for use on different cars while they were driven on public roads.

Historical fyi:

The man sitting in the GT350 was Eric Rickman, who was a Petersen Publishing company editor. He started in 1950 and retired in 1990/1(?). He wrote for all the automotive and motorcycle titles. A large segment of early Petersen photo files were shot by Eric, aka ERickMan. He did it all, from tech to event coverage.

Now you need a dealer plate from Shelby's Ford dealership in South Lake Tahoe.
