Title: Reproduction Group 24 Battery
Post by: nightmist67 on September 01, 2020, 07:19:39 PM
Just a note about my experience with the Turbo Start reproduction Group 24 Autolite battery.  When Virginia Classic Mustang announced earlier this year that they were going to carry the battery I ordered one.  When it arrived it was leaking acid around one terminal post.  Brant and Michelle were very proactive in their efforts to address the issue.  I received the replacement reproduction battery today, and that one is also leaking acid.  I sent Michelle photos of the leaking battery and the acid-eaten shipping box, which she forwarded to Turbo Start.  My understanding is that I am not the only person whose replacement battery was defective.

Two questions:

1.  Other manufacturers are able to make sealed AGM batteries.  Why should this be any different?

2.  What is the possibility that an existing AGM battery (e. g., Exide flat top) could be repackaged to resemble a correct appearing Group 24 Autolite battery?

Don't want to steal the thread but I just saw Virginia Classic Mustang is now also selling Group 27 Autolite AGM re-pop's  at https://www.virginiaclassicmustang.com/GROUP-27-AUTOLITE-BATTERY-MAINTENANCE-FREE-SEALED-STYLE-P1604.aspx,   Now if we could just get group 22's...

VCM may be getting their batteries through this business. I'm considering one of their AGM 24 series, anyone use their batteries? They aren't cheap and would require a AGM battery tender as well. I may just go with a 24 series I located locally that has the end tabs for securing using the OEM battery holder.

What brand of battery, with end tabs, did you find, locally?

I'll need to check it out tomorrow, it's supposed to be an Exide brand made for Rural King stores.

Don't get your hopes up.  Exide eliminated the end tabs on their cases a few years ago.  Your only hope is to find left-over stock, hopefully that hasn't had acid added yet.

I went to the store offering them, and yes it does have end tabs, but after reading several non glowing reviews I opted for a group 24 battery Autolite (Repop) offered by Jegs. It's a AGM type  from Battery Central Mall (site I listed earlier) I figured for correct battery fitment, and look correct justified the expense.

Received my Group 24 battery today. The battery, to my surprise, is actually a TurboStart Classic battery made right here in Knoxville TN. They make all kinds of batteries for different applications, including lightweight racing batteries, time to hit them up for one for #1806.

I also purchased a turbostart repop battery after reading this thread. The Delco branded Exide battery I had just didnt quite look right. I also got a new Battery Tender to hopefully avoid any issues.

First report,     Received battery no shipping damage and fully charged. One difference from the past reproduction battery is the raised AUTOLITE script on the top isnt colored red. Identical in color as battery case. Otherwise no other external difference.

I had to repaint the AUTOLITE and sta-ful lettering on an older battery because it was flaking off. I used a bottle of paint from the hobby shop and brushes from the arts and craft store. The brushes were sold for doing enamel paint. One was pointed and I used it for the sta-ful letters. The other was flat and about 1/8 inch wide that I used on the AUTOLITE. I cleaned the top with denatured alcohol before painting. Surprisingly, the paint stayed on the top of the letters and did not run down the raised portion. The brushes cost way more than the paint!

Mine arrived safely as well and was well packaged. I did put mine on a battery tender for five hours before it went into float mode, installing tomorrow.

Mike, the assemblyline 68 batteries most typically did not have the painted red letters from my observations. Unpainted more typically from my observations. Service batteries did have painted letters however.

Thank you Bob! Now I get to strip it back off. That should be easier than the painting! Mike

No good deed goes unpunished so just remember that the vast majority of people seeing the unpainted letters will think that it is wrong.

The third attempt at delivering an intact and functioning reproduction Autolite battery was successful.  It only took over a year to accomplish.

Check with your particular brand of tender, but Battery Tender, NOCO and Ctek do work on AGM batteries.
