Title: GT Roadster GT/108 PR Tour 65: Newport Beach Concours d Elegance- Pic found
Post by: Szabo on September 21, 2020, 06:48:09 PM
Hello,

i decided to start another Thread of one of my favourite Shelby Vehicels and a magic Point in Shelby Timeline...

Somedays i found this one magic coloured Pic from GT/108

and it was just blow me away... where was it, when was it, why there are no other Pics found

this was nearly 1 Year ago from now and i was very new in this hole Pic Research Thing...
but for me it was just "WOW"

(https://abload.de/img/riversideracewayfordgjpku1.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=riversideracewayfordgjpku1.jpg)

Time goes on and luckywise i found new pics and sources and learned a lot from Richstang
and reading in books.

very similar to the first, but other Persons
(https://abload.de/img/fordgtriv66b-768x542zojsi.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=fordgtriv66b-768x542zojsi.jpg)

last of the first batch was for me the Point for more questions and less answers i hoped too find...

Fantastic in Colour, and the same spot and date from the first one,
but we see more Cars, more Details.

(https://abload.de/img/tumblr_phg5kvqnjo1s7sv2knt.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=tumblr_phg5kvqnjo1s7sv2knt.jpg)

and because of that "Hi-Performance Motors" Sign on the Windscreen i was a little bit confused

i remember a Pic from the HF Database, there title was USRRC Riverside Raceway, May 1&2 1965
(https://abload.de/img/_riverside-1965-05-025gjhx.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=_riverside-1965-05-025gjhx.jpg)

we see clearly a lot of Cars on the Start/Finish Line from Riverside,
but not all has Racenumbers, and so i am wondering because why stands all this Cars on
the raceway, there must be a "Shelby Promo Tour" or something like this.
Cars i see:

from left to right
GT350 R - Vin unknown (maybe 5R002)
GT Roadster - GT/108
GT350 (only the rear bumper)
Race Cobra Nr. x98 - CSX 2431 (experimental Cobra)
white Cobra - Vin unkown

Please note this open ATLAS Caravan in the backround, important for other Pics later seen
(https://abload.de/img/screenshot_2019-08-075ojkn.png) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=screenshot_2019-08-075ojkn.png)

other Pics shown a camera Team, but not one of the cars shown befor, but it drives me crazy
and so i hit the internet ... some little news come with the Petersen Archiv Pics
(https://abload.de/img/screenshot_2019-08-074okn7.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=screenshot_2019-08-074okn7.jpg)

on this award ceremony we see a white Cobra and a GT350 befor the ATLAS Caravan
(https://abload.de/img/947140scr_wm_f415ec025dkoy.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=947140scr_wm_f415ec025dkoy.jpg)
i hoped to see the other Shelby Cars but on different other Pics around the Start/Finish Line but nothing more to see
(https://abload.de/img/947174scr_wm_afd15e0enokau.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=947174scr_wm_afd15e0enokau.jpg)

but from other Pics we know that some GT350 Street was on the Event
(https://abload.de/img/947016scr_wm_96948f5fjlkaq.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=947016scr_wm_96948f5fjlkaq.jpg)

Enough for today, hope you have fun and share some thoughts

in the Next few days we will have a closer look at USRRC Laguna Seca Race with some (hopefully new to you) Pics...

Stephan,
In case you don't know, some of your photos are not from the same date in January at the introduction or April on the GT/108 demonstration tour.
(I agree they are from Riverside.)
The color photo of the Cobra csx2431 (with no white stripes on the nose) appears to be from the LA Times GP event dated October 11th, 1964.
Those "P" watermarked Petersen photos are particularly tough to pinpoint without any notes or captions added from their website.

Hello Rich,

thanks for your critic ... you are right, the coloured Pic from the Race Cobra ist wrong, i will choose the right one for
the Race

i was confused about "98" CSX3002 and "x98" CSX2431, both was on the Race but i cant see the x on the Pic (https://abload.de/img/99n8jrx.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=99n8jrx.jpg)

the introduction and demonstration of the GT Roadster GT/108 was both at the same time
on the USRRC Race May 1&2 1965

(on January 27.01.1965 was the Introduction of the GT350 and only the normal  GT ("Coupe?"))

the Petersen Pics are not so difficult, they put some codes under the Pics, but it is sometime a little
bit difficult to find the right spelling that you get some result (GT350 or G.T. 350 or USRRC or United States Road Racing Championship)
(the Pics are shown are named United States ... )

For all i will post some Pics i forgot yesterday about USRRC Riverside Race May 1&2 1965

That is described at "Turn 6" on Riverside, anbody can this confirm ?

the sceond shows the white Street Cobra on the racetrack with Carroll befor ...
(i am not sure thats on riverside, maybe somebody knows it better ... )

Szabo, great threads, and in depth ! thanks for posting.

Sponsor decal placement on the #98 & #X98 is different, also the X98 car has the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club) decal on the

door. Can't see if the #98 car has it. Also the #98 has a filler cap on the right front fender, or is that just something resting on the

car ? These things might have been mentioned before ?

Thanks for all the answers and friendly words,

USSRC Laguna Seca 7-8-9 May 1965

(https://abload.de/img/asdf2zj72.png) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=asdf2zj72.png)

because of some very good HQ Pics from GettyImage we have a very good view
from the Promo Drive from Ken Miles,

Note this massiv Cracks in the Windshield, when you looks closley on the Pics from
USRRC Riverside befor, GT/108 already have that on this Timecode

(https://abload.de/img/gettyimages-163095887zgj74.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=gettyimages-163095887zgj74.jpg)

the follow pics are a poor of Quality, but they are in colour and in motion, i love it !!!
check this Video on Youtube for a really nice Promo Drive from GT/108, white Cobra and GT350

(https://abload.de/img/-22chaparral2alagunasdrjdm.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=-22chaparral2alagunasdrjdm.jpg)

on a Negativ Film i found this one from the Pitlane,
on the Heck is something like a Sticker,
i can only suggest but on biggest zoom i can something read like USRRC ...
(only my Thoughts, nothing i can proof)
(https://abload.de/img/unbenannt2fbkd7.png) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=unbenannt2fbkd7.png)

the most funny Pics from Laguna Seca is seeing the GT/108 as a
delievering Car for some new Team Jackets  ;D
... on the box stands "Personal Property of A.H. Dowo, do not open"
(https://abload.de/img/7047743015_0119b6c7fehnkll.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=7047743015_0119b6c7fehnkll.jpg)

This was it for today, i seeking for the next Pics, mainly from
1965 05 16 3rd Annual South Course Concours d Elegance Newport Beach
when anybody have something to help please share it ...

Hope you enjoy,

I'm late to this party so I'll have to go backwards in sharing photos from the start of GT/108's history.
Stephan, this is your post so if you only want to focus on the Tour let me know (PM is fine) and I’ll remove these other photos.
I’m sure there are other events it was displayed at during 1965. The following is what I have gathered with help so far.

-February 7, 1965; assembly at the Slough factory on
-March 3, 1965; testing at Silverstone
-March 1965; after Silverstone testing it was shipped overseas to Venice, California along. Here it is pictured on the side of the Carter Ave building (roughly estimate about a week later).
-April 30, 1965; Riverside ‘Promo Tour’ starts at the USRRC weekend races
-May 3, 1965; 3rd Annual, ‘South Course Concours D’ Elegance in Newport Beach’ (This is new info for me. Thanks Stephan!)
-May 9, 1965 Laguna Seca ‘Promo Tour’ at the USRRC weekend races
-June 6, 7, 8 1965; Shelby American Open House weekend. Trial presentation to families on Sunday,Ford Executives and the famous HF ride with CS ion Monday, and finally on Tuesday it was Press day
-July 27, 1965; road test at Riverside by R&T magazine
-August 7, 1965; Candlestick Park; ‘Promo Tour’ Pace car for the SCCA National (Another new detail for me from the recent offered photo on eBay.)
-October 1, 1965; Watkins Glen ‘Promo Tour; at the US Grand Prix
-1966; Northwester Ford: Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Display

Hello Rich,

thanks a lot for reply and a good friend is never to late for the party.

Perfect Timeline and every Info or Pic is welcome ...

i try to make this thread for 1965 but have also find some Pics from outside this year,
maybe i will post this later and we can find the right timecode for this ones.

For today i will go on in Timeline 1965

after the both USRRC Race Events GT/108 had a public appearance
on the 3rd Annual, South Course Concours D’ Elegance in Newport Beach dated 1965 May 16
(the Infos comes from the MECUM Sales brochure)

i tryed to get some good Information, but on Wikipedia stand that this Concours started first in 1983,
all others search get no result

i personal dont think the Info is wrong but i dont find a breadcrumb

so i go on in Timeline and come to my favourite Point and Place

LAX, Open House Event & Ride with HFII, June 6 to 8 1965

the first pic is not from the Open House Event but surley from the Race Hangar on LAX,
noted the big cracks in the Windshield, and Ken Miles not in Race Overall

(https://abload.de/img/p11101965kj1o.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=p11101965kj1o.jpg)

the Cracks in the windshield is a Detail i can locate clearly happend after comeing to
Princeton Drive, Venice in March and the first USRRC Race in April

Here a pic from March in Venice in HQ where the windshield is good
(https://abload.de/img/thf132330jlkvo.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=thf132330jlkvo.jpg)

the follow Pics are all from the 3 Day Open House Event, the Windshield is repaired and fine

Public Show Race from the End of the Blast wall to begin of Hangar 9 (Show Aera)
(https://abload.de/img/32ekp5.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=32ekp5.jpg)

Press Day Rides with Press People
(https://abload.de/img/5xsjs0.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=5xsjs0.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/112fjd5.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=112fjd5.jpg)

famous Ride with HF II and Board of Directors
(https://abload.de/img/dn1lm7zpdu1vta5sx3vmawjvi.png) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=dn1lm7zpdu1vta5sx3vmawjvi.png)

the last Pic is from the "Shelby Goes Racing Video" where it is clearly standing in Race Hangar on LAX
but i dont know when the film was made, so i could be befor or after the other Timecodes...

(https://abload.de/img/unbenannttzhertf0kks.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=unbenannttzhertf0kks.jpg)

Enough for Today, next Point in Time would be
27 July 1965 and the Test on Riverside

Any comments are welcome, it is not an easy work but i make it for all of us...

The "crack' in the windshield might just be a reflection. I don't notice that streak (?) in any outdoor photos.

OH, never mind!
It is clearly visible in the Getty Image outdoor photo. ( I had to get that off the Getty Images sight and Zoom in on it.

Ken Miles wore a dark suit at the Open House June 7th Ford executive day, but...
The lighter color suit might be from the June 6th Family day trial run or the June 8th Press day. That photo of him sitting in GT/108 inside the hanger could be from any of those three days. The white color shirt and dark tie looks the same. Same goes for the photo standing next to the Chevron gas pump.

i checked all my "Open House" Pics from all 3 Days and the GT Roadster appers on every day, but without a Crack on the Windshield.

so i suggest the Pic inside Hangar 9 was made befor the Open House Date, maybe it is a modern myth that Ken Miles always only
has a race suit on or was half naked standing in the pit  :)

Stephan and Rich:  Thanks very much for the additional info/photos of the cracked windshield.  Yep, cracked.

On the Sports Car Graphic cover, it's interesting that they chose to show two large photos of the Toronado, and nothing else.
Yes, I get that it was new and cool and all that. But a "sports car"...hardly.

The GT-40 track drive, Ferrari GTB test and the Chaparral at Indy would seem to have been better cover car material.

Wonder if there was an Olds ad inside.   ;D

i find a little bit Information, mostly is relativ new and seen here in the Forum...i will a little be copy and paste in Thread also for a better correct Timeline
Thanks again to Richstang (Rich) for the Pics and Infos

on the Race Lew Spencer drove the GT/108 as a Pace Car, on this wonderful Pic from the Race we can see 5R001 and 5R002 the Video for the Race is here
https://youtu.be/-I8Z6LjLxqg
0n the Race Program in Class B Production startet the two R`s

*32 (5R001) is driven by Jerry Titus,
*26 (5R002) is driven by Ed Leslie and owned by Chuck Cantwell ?
(this was a little surprising to read for me)

Sponsor was Shelby American and S&C Motors

next step was that GT/108 was stayed in the San Francisco Area, it is written that the Car "was taken under consigment by Hank Medeiros at Hayward Motors in San Francisco"
(i don't understand this Term very good in German, maybe can explore me what this means ...)

for thePics and Infos over Hayward Motors i have to thank Coralsnake,
for exactly Information please click the link
http://www.thecoralsnake.com/Hayward

of course is would be very nice to have a pic from GT/108 on a display or showroom like this, but nothing to found anywhere

any thoughts are welcome
Greets
Stephan

Chuck Cantwell likely entered 5r002 on behalf of Shelby American. He never owner it that I'm aware of.
It would be nice if someone found a photo of the GT/108 pacing the field before the race.

(On consignment, means they are representing the owner to help sell the car.)
Knowing the car never sold by Hayward, perhaps it was meant to be on display only, but on paper listed as a consignment.
Maybe someone else can fill in that detail more accurately.

Hello at all,

today i would like to finish the, hopefully after this thread, known Promo Tour of GT/108

Grand Prix of the United States on Watkins Glen
from 1 - 3 October 1965

(https://abload.de/img/s-l1600ddddddu5khu.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=s-l1600ddddddu5khu.jpg)

most of the Pics are known and well posted from Mike ( Honker), thank you
any thoughts and answers are always welcome, and like the car, you was a little bit fast  :)

Please note that a this point the hood was flat black and the thin-wide-thin triple Stripe was
on the Car... this was the first time in 65 when we see that.

(https://abload.de/img/watkins_glen_demo-16zfkwj.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=watkins_glen_demo-16zfkwj.jpg)

i will post two more Pics for better overview and little bit wider view
of the event

the first one is good because we see a GT350 R in the backround,
he was also doing a promo round on Watkins Glen

(https://abload.de/img/0037-mo14_r201_1036cj03.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=0037-mo14_r201_1036cj03.jpg)

the second on is shown only this GT350 R in HQ Pic

(https://abload.de/img/gettyimages-88687138-udjnk.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=gettyimages-88687138-udjnk.jpg)

My collected and sorted Pics and Infos are almost done...

I hope you have some fun and maybe found ne pics and Infos
of this true SA history point in time

Greets

Steve

P.S.:

Of course i found some more Pics i will post here, maybe anybody has
an Idea when was the pics made, and which person take a seat.

Note that the stripe is modified and have the same form and size which
was it on 2014 on the known auction

Stephan;

Nice work putting the timeline together on GT/108. I like the added race programs and the road test from the period magazine.
I had two more photos from Watkins Glen in my files. After this, the car disappears from the public spotlight.

a Detail we see in the backround is that tower and so
Richstang and myself tryed to see that Tower on Watkins Glen,

i found some pics for Watkins Glen with a tower but it seems to be

The first two photos, posted by Stephan, with this group of Shelby's is a fantastic site and find!!!
At first I didn’t think it was at Watkins Glen, but there too many coincidences pointing to that location.

Looks at the collection of cars here;
The Cobra CSX3011 no98 to the left in the first photo
The GT40 P/1004 in front of the Cobra
The GT350 R model is what I believe to be 5R213 in front of the GT40
The Daytona to the right of the GT350 R model appears to be CSX2287 (note the no10 on the rear)
The Roadster GT/108 with the blackout hood

This appears to be a preview of the cars that would become part of the ‘Cobra Caravan’ that toured the country for a month, starting November 17 through December 17th, 1965.

-The Daytona csx2287, went on to the Bonneville Salt Flats November 6, 1965. It needed to be refreshed afterwards, so it was replaced for the start of the Cobra Caravan tour with CSX2286.
-The previous rear view photo, posted in this thread of the lone ’65 GT350 R model, was said to be a pace car at the October 2-3, 1965 Watkins Glen US GP race.
It certainly matches in appearance (no rear bumper or sponsors) and the timing fits. The R model in the Caravan has been said to be 5R213.
-Finally the Grand Prix car race no7, Brabham BT11, was in Watkins Glen for the US Grand Prix. That matches perfectly in timing.

That's an interesting photo you found. Thank you for posting it here!
The GT/108 Roadster appears to be next to GT/104 (no11) and perhaps this was taken inside the race hanger at LAX.

Notice the tape residue on the nose in an offset square shape. That matches it's last race at the Nurburgring on May 23rd, 1965.
It would take about a week to ship back to the USA, so this photo would likely have been taken at the end of May or in very early June.
I'm suggesting it was at LAX since GT/108 was already in the US and appeared with CS and HFIII on June 8, 1965 at the open house.

For a few days i found on the John Atzenbach Mecum Site a 3 negativ
from a GT Roadster and some Cobras and a GT350R

i was electrified and have some conversation which Richstang and
would like to share with you.

i never saw this pics befor and think normaly no one will notice that
this Pics was from the Riverside Event

But when you flip the negativ and enlarge it and have some known
Pics for focus the Details this is proofed for me.

So enjoy the Return to Riverside

first this known Pic from my first post, notice how the cars stand
in the Row
(https://abload.de/img/screenshot_2019-08-07aykx7.png) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=screenshot_2019-08-07aykx7.png)

the first Dia negativ (flipped and enlarged) show the same standing
from GT/108, behind the GT350R and next to them the Cobra "x98"
new for this pic is Ken Miles Cobra "98" behind the first Cobra,
but we know that both Cobras was on the Event and driven
(https://abload.de/img/gt108negativjacollect84jwt.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=gt108negativjacollect84jwt.jpg)

the second Dia negativ (flipped) shows the GT350R,
this is not 5R002 because of the Vent Windows, no Decals or Stickers on it
in the backround we can see the Transporter Caravan
(https://abload.de/img/unbenannthhhccccijcz.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=unbenannthhhccccijcz.jpg)

the third Dia negativ shows the Cobra "98" driven by Ken Miles,
in the backround clearly you see the Riverside building,
right you can see the nose of an Alfa Romeo Car
on the B/W photo you can see this Alfa Car standing left to the building
(https://abload.de/img/unbenanntrhjr4.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=unbenanntrhjr4.jpg)

Probably Freidman. How do we tell the 4 small block roadsters apart? 108, 109, 111 & 112. This is a good article on 109. I always remembered Dean Jefferies referring to his GT40 as his retirement project. A toy he was going to do after he closed his shop. PS 110 was a big block. I do realize the history of this car as the only one to run LeMans but being a SoCal guy I'm really torn that it is restored to original rather than how completed by one of SoCal's most famous and well known customizers. He also had some sketches he'd done for mild customization but left the body stock due to rising value.  (He arguably did start the Pirate Porsche trend https://petrolicious.com/marketplace/dean-jeffries-1956-porsche-356a-gs-carrera-coupe many years before it became popular)

Riverside April 30 - May 2 weekend
Anyone know the ID for the white street Cobra (289?) The other two #98 Cobra's are well known.
The R model is probably 5r001. There were only a handfulf of R models completed by that time and the few others were customer cars.
I don't think it's 5r002 as it had the single piece side window until at least 4/18/67. (By 6/27 it appeared with the added false vent window.

98SVT - was 06GT
I'm not sure if your asking how to tell the other roadsters apart from GT/108 in period or now.
There are several period photos of each car to tell them apart, but after they made their public appearances I haven't followed what changes may have taken place.
108 shown in this thread, was white with the blue side rocker stripes, later getting the blacked out hood
109 only appeared at LeMans June 20, 1965 in white with a blue center stripe (no15) It had hood vents that were triangular shaped but rounded in the center.
111 appears at the LeMans time trials in April 1965 in white (no7) with flat sided triangle shaped hood vents. It was repainted light green for Targa Florio (no194).
112 appeared at the Nurburgring in the same light green, but with white side rocker stripes (no10). The body looked the same as 111. By 1966 it was painted dark green.

This was a great article with COLOR photos in 'The Shelby American" 2016 Spring quarterly issue.
That was the first time I saw csx3012 with the red '1' race number. I just assumed it was black in all the b&w photos with that the Cobra.
I also thought they could only fit four race cars in the boxed transporter trailer. The sequence photos show at least five unloaded. (all in the first pic)
Nice shot of the "Look Don't Touch" sign in the window of the roadster. I guess there were fewer restriction to the pit area back in those days.

A little bit more information on the Watkins Glen event....October 1, 1965 (Friday)....It was set up as a 3-hour seminar and demonstration with Jim Clark, Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio.  Jim Clark used the first hour to explain "the racing skill and knowledge which have led him to two world titles."  Stirling Moss spoke "on race techniques, strategy and gamesmanship."  Fangio was there to show "driving techniques in sports cars."  Carroll Shelby provided the cars and "lectured on the construction and driving of a race car."  "Three team drivers, Skip Scott and Tom Payne of Michigan and Bob Johnson of Ohio, showed their techniques in Shelby built cars." (quotes are from the The Boston Sunday Globe-October 3, 1965)

Hey,

little but extraordinary news in this Thread ...

The last missing piece of the puzzle was always the 3rd Annual South Course Concours d'Elegance Newport Beach Event on May 16, 1965

i read in the Auction Sales Brochure about that event, but never find a pic or anything on the net.

I even suspected it was misinformation, but when you no longer expect it, sometimes something wonderful happens

So i found in the Autoweek Issue 19 June 1965 a little but very nice pic and report from GT/108 on the show.

Here are some photos showing 108 Im guessing in 1971 in Michigan based on the license plate. Someone sent them to me when we were researching 109 during restoration.

Carroll must have known somebody at the Newport golf club or he just liked to golf there.  Was it called The Newporter Inn & Country Club back then?

That venue is where he held his "Garage Sale" in what...1986 or so?

I was there, and also attended many Concours shows, but can't remember much... 8)
