It's wild that the top half burned and melted but the lower half didn't. The right person could save it- bummer about the shock towers. Based on the look of the gauge cluster I wonder of the VIN tag melted away.

There must be quite a few cars that are destroyed on west coast. Any way to know? Insurance companies will be raising cost to cover all the fire damage.......

Doesn't look like a fair but instead an exposure burn from the rear. Because of this it was likely much kinder on the unibody metal than if the cars interior had been fully involved. Saw a similar situation today while out driving. In that case the car was parked in the driveway about three foot from the garage door. Garage caught fire and the door was open or burnt through allowing the flames to exit and rise exposing the cars upper panels to the high heat.

Seen this hundreds of times

I spoke with the owner and he felt very confident that he would sale it for at least $25K.  I hope the new owner puts it back on the road and it isn't re-bodied.  Since the SAAC knows the VIN it should motivate the next caretaker to catalog the restoration.

By the time you add $100,000+ for the restoration You'll only be upside down a few thousand on this one.

For the record, when the auction site disappears.

Auction description:

This low mileage Shelby has been sitting for 40 years. It was last registered in 1980 and has 38K original miles. The title is clear and is currently on a planned non-operation. The Marti Report says it's one of 35.It still has the original paint. The floors and chassis are solid (see photos). It is a R-Code, 428 SCJ/Drag Pack car with 3:91 rear end gears. Grabber blue with black interior, fold down seat, tach dash, AM radio, power steering, power brakes, visibility group. It has the original wheels but not the original tires. The motor is missing, the original vin numbered close ratio toploader transmission is being sold with the car and a replacement set of OEM shock towers. The car has been modified for drag racing. It was in a flash fire and burned from the waist line up. The bottom of the seats, bottom of the door panels, and carpet are not burned. All of the glass is shattered. The dash, steering wheel, top of the door panels, seat backs, top of the fenders, hood and trunk lid are burned (see photos). The roof is dented. It steers and rolls well so it's easy to move around. More photos are available and the car can be inspected with an appointment. The car is being sold as is, the deposit is not refundable, no returns and buyer is responsible for pick up or shipping.

How rare is this car?  What would one bring today fully restored?  Yes the restoration would certainly be on the high end here not to mention the cost of "Shelby" parts the melted.

There were 172 close ratio 4 speeds cars and the ad states the Marti breaks it down to 1 of 35.

to be clear on Marti reports on 69-70 Shelbys they can be VERY misleading. First off it is 1 of 35 GB cars with black interior-both GT350 and GT500. No break down like you see with many other cars from Marti in that how many of those 35 or even the 55 GB cars were drag packs. How many were 4 speeds? Now I know there were at least 3 as I found one at a show(thought it #3051?) that was one close to my VIN and was the same combo (#3052).  Marti starts at one thing on non Shelby cars then goes down and down until he gets to 1 of 1 if possible. Like I said he doesn't do that with Shelbys from my experience. Back in the 2000s Vinny broke my car down and I'm sure he could with this car also. My GT350 vert was 1 of less than 10 like it but the Marti report doesn't reflect it. Marti should have done my vert as 1 of 57: of 57 12 were red(Marti shows 27 so 15 were GT500s): of those 7 were 4 speeds; of those 5 had black interior white tops IIRC-got it written down somewhere. But in reality I call it one of 57 or those who are picky 1 of 194(69-70s). Now only 23 of the 57 were 4 speed cars on my Marti report as shown below. So if you wanted a 4 speed 70 Gt350 vert there is a good chance there are LESS than 23 of them in existence. My GB 70 GT500(repainted RED).  Gary

Usually we estimate what ever we think we are going to spend on a car and we multiply it by two.  So if you say $25K by the end of the resto we are at close to $50k
In this case mutiply it by FOUR and that should give you a good number.....

Currently at $28,300 good luck buyers !

Those who have restoration parts to sell should keep track of the auction and get ready to contact the buyer. 8)

This car, the other car in the mud and the one on Craigslist a.k.a. the sugar cookie car all need LARGE CASH INFUSIONS plus TIME, lots of TIME.

Money has a present value and so does time.

At the end of the journey he or she will look back and realize that for less money they could gave been riding and enjoying a S H E L B Y all that lost time.

A very wise old man once told me " el tiempo perdido hasta los muertos lo lloran" did not get in then, but its very clear to me now.

Adios

Well spoken and so very true.  I thought about bidding and then sat and had a cold beer instead.  Cleared my head right up.  Tempting, however...

There were a few things that concerned me on this one (I know, only a few  ;D).

1) Could the fiberglass be reformed and saved so as to retain the numbers to an original type of degree, I highly doubt it.
2) Not having the original engine, that really hurts the value overall and lots of expensive pieces to find.
3) The tainted VIN will always haunt the car.
4) When the new owner does it get restored, they better have clear photo's showing the process and not just "showing up" with a done car or everyone will be saying, re-body.   Then they will have a nice conversation piece for an heirloom.

If anyone knows the new owners, recommend they should do a youtube on it, "phoenix out of the ashes" series, I would subscribe to watch that one.

Same or less concerns than in the 6S1341 - On Bring A Trailer car. At a certain price there is a home and an owner for just about anything. As we've seen in the past.

Hi all,

I know the new owner.  I met with him on Monday and saw the car, image below.  He has the skills, resources and the funding to restore.  I will keep an eye on the car's progress and post images as they become available.  Turns out the car actually was burned back in the 80's.  He does not have the details of the fire, but it was not the recent fires in CA.  He believe the fenders can be saved, not sure on other pieces.

Glad to hear someone who has the where with all has the car to save and is optimistic about the restoration. Let him know that he can get answers to Shelby car questions on this forum.
