Post by: johnzajc@gmail.com on February 18, 2021, 05:04:29 PM
Hi --- for 30 years I have brand new set or rims with gold aluminum center, chrome is perfect, rivets look factory and center piece looks like factory painted---Bob thinks that original owner must painted himself however it looks to nice of an job . Before I stripped and refinish aluminum does anyone knows if there were manufactured that way by some strange shop or it is hobbyist job. thanks

The clear coat on the rough side spokes area may have yellowed with age after 30 years if left exposed and may not be gold paint.

When I bought #2060 some 51 yrs ago The wheels had a hint of gold on the spokes,,,not nearly as much as this one but definitely a hint of gold tone...(2060 was a Hertz rental with 8,000 miles). Ed might have the answer...

in my 37 years of owning these years Shelby I have never seen gold wheels on a car and have seen a lot at wheels at swap meets also.

There is a huge market for 69 shelby restored rims if somebody can rechrome rim and rivet them back together. I have loaned out rims in the past to be restored concours correctly but nobody ever got them done and i never got my rims back. Craig conleys been doing them for many years but he uses a different rim and uses big allen head screws them back on so even thou u have original centers the rims are not the same and they are very noticeable as the outer curled lip is much shorter than originals. The original chrome rims can be rechromed if somebody can find a shop to rivet them back on. The original J A Pan rims were bad chrome when new as i got 2 sets of nos 69 shelby rims and some of them have rust pitting and have never been installed.  All the nice used rims i bought over the years all have some rust issues and the ebay rims i bought all have rust problems not seen in the ebay photos.  I got 40 rims here now that need restored but cant find anybody. You can cut the rim off the glued in rims  and save the center if not corroded by the rim contact area and use them on a riveted rechromed rim if the rivet center is corroded so even the glued in centers have value if not corroded. Remember all 69-70 shelbys came with these good looking unique wheels and not a wheel option like all other year shelbys!!

Ed given the rms are hard to find and also given that many rims have the centers corroded badly where they make contact with the rim wouldn't it be better to save the rim and cut out the center . Conley and others have made up centers which they use with DOT rims. Of course some rims that have been badly damaged or rust pitted can't be saved.

Riveting them back together is the problem and need a sealant around the rivets and holes so tire pressure air dont leak out around the 5 rivet holes.

You forgot to mention the liability problem that someone that rivets them faces if one comes apart and there is damage or heaven forbid injury to another.

Void any warranty and have wheel owner sign paper saying not responsible. The suspension rebuilders have been riveting ball joints  for last 30 years or so and many shops been re riming magnums & restoring factory mag and styled steel rims for 30 years or so and have never heard of anybody having a problem with suspension or rims yet.  These concours show cars never get driven anyway but on and off a trailer. I have never heard of anybody wanting used original re riveted control arms or restored original rims being installed on a race car that gets used and raced today in competition or anybody installing these restored parts on a daily driver so no need to worry about liability and if u do just take wheels to be tested some where.  I have seen these 69 shelby wheels come off cars that were being driven  and they were corroded badly by the rim contact area and the center was raised and separated  from the rim from corrosion and they never came apart. The only separation problems i ever heard of came from old glued on rims NOT riveted rims like we are talking about restoring.  There are plenty of old used 69 shelby rims sitting around since all 69-70 shelbys had them  they just arnt good enought to put on a restored car since them JAPAN rims had very poor quality chrome back in 68-69.

In 1972 we needed new wheels for our 69. So we take it to the local ford dealer. After a few weeks they say they have them and the car is ready. We go and see that the wheels are mismatched. 2 are the correct clear coat look that you see and the other 2 are much darker. I will not say they were black in the center but they were definitely dark ,maybe grey color. Remember, these were brand new wheels from ford. So I know at least 2 wheels were painted wrong or something incorrect. We tell them that the 2 dark wheels were not a match ,so they ordered 2 more. We finally get a matched set. I do not believe I have seen any other 69 wheels with the dark centers. They were correct 69 wheels. Ed, have you seen any with dark centers? Thought you all might like that story.

Brad  dont remember seeing dark center 69 shelby wheels. I seen 3 types of these wheels and a very early odd type back years ago at portland swap meet and the centers were redish that someone painted. They were different than any other 69 shelby wheels i seen and i wanted to buy them but i flew out to the meet and would have to figure out how to ship them home so i passed on them then after not finding anything else to buy i went back and the wheels were gone. I think those wheels were the first type made and the only ones i had ever seen and they were  recalled wheels the guy told me. Just remember these wheels were MADE IN JAPAN

Just to clarify what Ed meant to say is the steel rim portion was made in Japan, the cast aluminum portion was made here in the US. They were assembled in the US.
