Title: Upper control arm crack
Post by: Jack4159 on April 03, 2021, 03:29:15 AM
Can anyone tell if these are original?
I have no reason to think they are not but have no expertise to tell if they are?
As you can see in the pics there is a crack near the rivet holes, both arms are cracked in the same place.
My question is(and I do realise it may be a stupid one), can this be safely welded up, or is that a bad idea?
The reason I ask is that I an having difficulty finding an oem 4 river/bolt replacement, closest I have found is the rare parts one on NPDLINK with a Moog balljoint at $272- apiece.
I don't mind paying the price but would prefer to keep the originals(if they are original), but obviously not if welding to repair is unsafe.
Thanks in advance.

Looks like the cutback design-see the link to control arm/suspension. These control arms are around and maybe found restored. Marcus does them. Ed or Pete might have them. http://anghelrestorations.com/uploads/3/5/1/2/35122002/65_to_73_suspension_guide_v2.4aopt.pdf

The cutback ones came in about April 1968 so typically something that you would see on a '68 KR. They were superceded about a year later because of the cracking issues. If you find some that are not cracked then likely they won't crack. If one is cracked it's not going on one of my restorations. A weld repair would not be trustworthy on that part.

Easy repair as long as you know how to prepare and weld
