I think it's for a Hurst shifter

Agree on the ball being for a Hurst Shifter.

Should be 1/2" by 20 fine thread. Over the counter Hurst shifter knob, late 60's and early 70's.

Mine appears to be 3/8 corse thread. I will have to check it to be sure.
