Title: 2018 Ford Nationals Carlisle
Post by: BGlover67 on May 11, 2018, 06:11:06 PM
http://www.carlisleevents.com/carlisle-events/carlisle-ford-nationals/default.aspx

Can anyone tell me how this is to attend?  It's always been on my bucket list, but I've always have to work or something.  Is it really the end all for parts?  Looking for early inner quarter panels for the fastback latch area on my '67.  Is this where I need to go to find something like that?

Brian,

Like all the other car show swap meets, the last 5-10 years have seen a downward trend in vendor attendance. You still never know what might show up there in those parts isles. I think the are six or seven rows about 1/8 - 1/4 mile long. They used to have every space filled with vendors. These last few years have seen lots of empty spaces by past comparison. Friday is best for parts hunters to get the best finds, although getting an early Saturday morning start isn't terrible.

Despite the decreasing size of the vendor area, the Carlisle Ford Nationals show, seems to just keep getting bigger every year. This place is a massive event for all things Ford. I don't really know the numbers, but figure at least 3000-3500 cars and trucks, all built by Ford. By comparison, the GM event only a few weeks later isn't even close to half the size in both show cars and vendors. Here's a photo I put together from the north west corner. This doesn't even show the vendor area at the southwest corner - to the south east corner that is behind the grandstands in the distance. It also doesn't show the entire truck and Mercury / Lincoln area to the east and north, up the hill.

Its a fun event... bring your best walking shoes. a rain slicker and a pile of cash:) everybody thinks they're the only one holding a specific part . Good luck finding a hotel room at this point though. Friday and Sat am are best shopping days.
Good luck

The way this spring is going Rain is a higher probability than normal. Might need a pair of mud boots for the vendor areas too.

Mixed weather Thursday, sun and rain.

Here's Rod pushing his KR into place in the "T" building...note the banner over his head has his car on it.

Stop by and say hello...

I was planning to go, but the weather is looking like rain most of the day; ARRGHH!!!

80% chance 9am
90% chance 10am
80% till noon
70% by 2pm
60% by 3pm
finally ending around 3pm.

Also, a light rain early Sunday 6am -9am, then dropping to 30% the rest of the day
I'll check again early SAT am for any improvements before a final decision is made.

I just got back from there.  Turned out to be a beautiful day.  Saw a lot of great cars.  Surprisingly few classic Shelby.  I think I counted 7 in total.  There were 3 beautiful KR's, 2 67s, one GT350 and one GT500, a regular 68 GT500 and a 69 GT500.

This year was a great example of how you really never know what the weather will be till you are there!
Was there Thurs am to Sat afternoon.
Saturday kicked my butt with the heat and humidity!
Drove all the way back to GA Sat 11 hours (after dropping my buddy at home in VA)

weather was great, lots of stuff to see and do, only sad thing was that there only 6 Early cars in attendance and I think one was a clone. Got a nice start on a sunburn

Without a doubt people stayed away due to the dire weather forecasts but the rain stayed away until late Saturday night.

Saturday afternoon and early evening were really pleasant back at the hotel parking lot.

The Early Shelby's that were there...

Steve's was the only '66 I saw, (Steve thanks for the conversation on planes)

One '68 GT500

One '69 GT500

One '67 GT500 Roy's car

One '67 Clone, nice car. The owner was very up-front that it was his way of getting a '67 Shelby-like car, he did a lot of work to get it this way.

Saw a nice set of '67 T-Bird wheel covers, used - not perfect but vey nice.  The guy was not at his space but the guy next to him was and gave me his cell number.  No price was shown.

PM me if you want the cell number, I think the vendor was from Virginia.

LOL! that's me on the left in the pic you posted - I would loved to have had the chance to chat with you JD.

Oh, yeah, I had the keys to that CJ in my pocket the whole show.

I shouldn't post this, I look such a fright in this video. I got to Carlisle early on Thursday to position the CJ GT-E and I had just finished cleaning it up when Lou from "My Car Story" asked to video it and ask me some questions.

I tried to defer and told him one of THE Cougar and GT-E experts was going to be at the show the next day but Lou films these before the official open when there are no crowds or background announcements.

He also does them all in one take, with no editing.

Saw only two early Boss's, one each '69 and a '70...

I think the threat of weather must have kept some away.

Was my first time there, past years there was always a work conflict.  Very well run, biggest parts vendors grouping I've seen in years.

Saw a few SAAC people and missed a few too.

OH! Then we did talk and I didn't realize it (was you).  I took those images Thursday during set-up, you were taking some photos in the trunk.  You talked to me about the car.  (I was the old guy with white hair - wait that was half the guys there!)

Your Art on the Tee-shirts and posters for the Cougars looked great!

LOL!

Well dang! I'm pretty sure I stopped and talked to you about your Shelby at the SAAC convention at VIR one year also.

I am running around so much at Carlisle, I can get wigged out sometimes (the Cougar guys can attest to that).

I saw Dave Redman (I always seem to bump into him in a vendor isle) and I stopped by Ed's to say hey but he is always gone so I said hello to Donna instead who is always a delight.

And thank you for the complements on my work  ;D

JD,
Thanks for posting the Shelby photos. These looks like the die-hard enthusiasts who display their cars year after year at Carlisle. Better weather would have brought out a few more than the low numbers you saw there.

propayne,
One of these years we'll cross paths at Carlisle. Now that I know what you look like, I can keep an eye out for you in the field and vendor areas.
Don't sweat the video you did just fine pointing out several of the GT-E details. I was caught off guard at the NY auto show a few years back. The news crew picked me out of the crowd to interview. ugh.

That GTE with the 428 CJ was a car I could really lust after, saw a Yellow Boss 302 Cougar "over the hill". Did anyone see that wacky 1970 Ranchero with the plaid interior, 429 with Shaker 4 speed.

Maybe next year we can talk Events at Carlisle into having a nice indoor "Classic" Shelby Display and try and have one of each year (1965-1970, including all variation, GT350's GT500's and GT500 KR's and even the 68- through 70 Convertible models. I know there are enough cars to do it, but do we have enough owners willing to commit to the Thursday-Sunday time frame.
Just a thought

Thanks for posting the Marti & spec sheet.

Propayne sorry i missed you at my new spots o42-47 since we got moved as carlisle made the swap meet  field spaces smaller & show field bigger. I seen the 68 gte xr7 4 speed cougar u had there & it looks  better now that the original parts that came with the car at the owls head maine auction ( where i inspected this car) are back on this special rare cougar. The shaker ranchero was also very Kool.

That Ranchero takes me back:  River Oaks Ford in Calumet City IL had a 69 orange and black GT 390 Ranchero sitting on the lot back in the day.  Strolled past it numerous times.  Love it.
