Title: Rear spring shackle orientation??
Post by: lawrence67 on May 14, 2022, 12:33:56 PM
I believe there was some discussion about direction lh and rh shackles and their fitment difference side to side and potential for exhaust interference.  Searched but nothing turned up.  Any hints??

There is a illustration in the 67 chassis aseemblyline manual of the set. The special duel exhaust shackle goes on drivers side. If you don't have the assemblyline manual set try NPD. The manuals are a must have if concerned about originality and they will answer this question and many more .

Really good for '67 owners get these books/manuals- get all of them, most are available in print or disc.  There are some for other years too the different years series are different colors - '67's are black, '66 are red '68 pinkish etc.

Here's a link to one:

I have all those manuals.  Pg 15 of Chassis Assy Manual view W shows what I assume is lh side shows the shackles with bolts solid so the assy ends up with nuts on inside.  Rt shackle ends up with the nuts one on each side as the bolts are (welded?) one to each end of shackle.  My illustration description is the victum of Osbornes' aging pictures.  Is this correctly interpreted?  The so called "special" one has both bolts welded and goes in from lh driver outside to driver inside.

Driver side is left and pass side is right. View W is of the pass side which is the right side. The nuts go on the outside of the frame rail. The duel exhaust car shackle goes on the left side . The nut side is on the inside of the frame rail for the upper and the nut is on the outside of the frame rail on the lower. This gives maximum clearance from exhaust tip and why that shackle was  designed that way.  65-67 were the only years to use it .

Thanks Bob, I totally misread the drawing and missed the W arrow.  Got it now.  Shud have used my new glasses.

Agreed about the worn printing.  Somebody in the future will re-draw these illustrations so you can clearly read them.  But, until that happens sometimes having a magnifying glass to look through helps.
Note: watch out on the Branda book.  It was dated way late, like June or July of 67.  You may need to look and draw in the correct way for the earlier cars.

Some, not all, of the images are in the service manual and those are typically clearer ;-)
