Title: Do cars extend a man's life?
Post by: deathsled on June 16, 2018, 01:32:56 PM
Barring a car crash, does auto racing and car culture make men live longer? This on the heels of a 90 year old that entered a NASCAR race in May. And all the old racers still around. And Shelby living to 89 even after a heart transplant from the early 1990s. What are your thoughts?

Best regards,

Richard E.

It's an interesting question, why do you ask?

This is easy

If she knows what you spent...no

If she is blissfully unaware...yes

Cars sure the hell extend my bank roll but, yeah, I believe having a car passion will extend your life.  Having passions and interests  in your daily activities make life worth living and they do just that.  They make you live longer.

Now when I see an attractive model across a beautiful car, well.............. that extends my ........... "life"  :D

Intellectual curiosity.  My dad is 90 going strong.  Total gearhead.  Seems to be a pattern.

True - she may kill you for dragging one more home.

Happy wife = Happy life... Mix in some cool cars and doing what you love- Racing, restoring, cruising or just mixing and mingling with like minded individuals gives all of us purpose. Hopefully will add years on the clock! :)

What about "no wife=happy life."  Life after women.  I've never felt better.  I'm not easy to tame when it comes to relationships anymore.  Maybe in my twenties and even my thirties.  But no longer.  Taming the Shelby at speed?  Well that's a whole other matter...

My wife tolerates the mistresses in the garage and prefers a ring with a car key over clutter on her fingers.

I think if you look at the objective science on this subject, you will find having a close-knit circle of friends is what is really going to extend your life.

I think these special cars can do that for you. The fact that it gives you joy is the icing on the cake.

A long life pales in comparison to really living as far as I'm concerned. And I've never felt more alive than being behind the wheel with my right foot planted to the floor, slammed back in the seat and hanging on tight watching the world rush by as the engine screams it's way to the redline.

But maybe that's just me...

Happy Father's Day to all you dads, especially the ones still going strong into the sunset!

Anything that gets you out of your La-Z-Boy and off your duff is a good thing.  I just returned from VIR instructing for a club HPDE, will be doing a couple of car shows before doing more HPDE's later in the Fall...that plus doing the service on all the vehicles, yard work and "honey-do's".  I'm not the kind of person that says "Guess how old I am." but, for the sake of this discussion, let's just say I'm closing in on 80.  My dad always told me "It's harder to hit a moving target" so I don't intend on slowing down.

Cars are like women... a good one most certainly can but a bad one is nothing but trouble, stress and will kill you  ;)

I don't know if you are referring to cars or women but I have been blessed with both for over 45 years... ;D

There, you see?  All the good ones were taken.  All I was left with was B grade Detroit scrap iron.

There is certainly a lot of duds out there Richard. A cold beer and your red lady is absolutely all you need. Cheers

Well 82 year old dad had a serious health scare the other week.  I emergency flew from Europe to be at his hospital bed. He rallied extremely well and was released from hospital.  He then immediately wanted to collect the 64.5 convertible he bought the week before

So yeah, cars help longevity

Very glad to hear about all the older dads who still have gasoline in their veins.

My dad, when he was in his 80s, loved it when I'd do a smoky burnout and run it hard through the gears, when giving him a ride.

Probably like most of you, I'll be boiling the hides until they cart me off in a box.

So +1 for cars extending a man's life.  Make that "fast, gas-guzzling performance cars, preferably with carburetors."

There are certainly studies worldwide that show that having an interest or hobby can increase longevity. But there is also studies showing that being married increases longevity for men... people may argue against that depending on your wife.  ;D

The people that did that study weren't married to Ms Z Ray #2.  That gal got juiced up one night and tried to shoot me with my own Winchester 7mm Magnum.   Luckily for me, that rifle has a 3 position safety and she kept trying the "wrong" position long enough for me to to get the thing away from her.

At which point she conveniently passed out and the next day remembered nothing of the "incident".  I didn't sleep too well around that gal after that.....

Ha Ha !

no, I told her she couldn't go out drinking with her drinkin' pal anymore, if she kept coming home in a Police cruiser ( as had just happened that same night ).  That didn't sit well.
