Title: Help With Identifying Symbol on Magstar Cap
Post by: BGlover67 on August 12, 2018, 02:05:49 PM
No. 26 has it's original Magstar center caps with emblems, although they are currently installed on a set of reproduction rims.  Each emblem is a non-embossed snake, as would be expected on a double digit car, but they have turned silver.  On it's underside, they have a dark orangey-red adhesive (see pic).  I gently removed them to save them for prosperity sake, and noticed one cap had this symbol painted on it.  Does anyone recognize it?  Has anyone else found such thing?  Interesting that it would be there from the factory.  Perhaps it's a symbol for Kelsey Hayes?  Or it's an ancient language proving that they first 100 cars really were built by aliens?

I have seen it before . I always thought it was a derivative of a KH trademark. I have bought them in them in KH blister packs before.

If you rotate it 90 degrees CW its appears to be the stylized initials SR if that is a clue

Magstar used the tri-emblem as their company label/emblem. Red, white and blue with the lines that we see in the ads and on the over the counter wheels and center

Maybe the cap was made for another retail outlet

Did Sears & Roebuck have auto centers that sold KH wheels aftermarket?

Yes. Don't recall the emblem they had on their wheels but that is a possibility

those were from wheels that were purchased from sears. also note that the orange paper was used on back of a lot of emblems as far as service parts went. not sure of purpose, it wasn't sticky and I never got it to peel off. maybe where you put adhesive? phred

That orange was the adhesive. It was dried up by the time many of the service emblems got around to being used. You had to use different additional adhesive added over the dried orange adhesive to get them to work.

It definitely resembles some crop symbols that I have seen pictures of. Conspiracy advocates will say aliens. Trumpests will say illegal aliens.

I think the SR's were used on Sears marketed wheels in the '60s?

Wow, you guys are good.  Amazing you figured out that was Sears And Roebuck.  I swear half of you should be detectives.

It was a common adhesive that can be seen on many of the Shelby emblems.

Yes, Sears sold the Mag Stars as did a number of other retailers.

There were some other Kelsey Hayes center emblem designs as well...

What would the far right emblem come on? Just a non-Sears aftermarket retailer?

Over the counter wheels or in packages with just the center caps. Think that KELSEY design was after the red/white and blue but would have to look up the advertising and compare dates

Tire stores as well as mechanic shops sold the wheels for all kinds of cars and lug patterns. Ran a set of 14" Chevy wheels (had them machined for unilugs) for a late 67 GT350 I drove to SAAC 13. They had the tri color caps

^^^ Yes, as Jeff already stated.  Also the version I posted was on a different Kelsey Hayes wheel design, but it was also a steel rim riveted to a cast aluminum center.

Detectives no, aliens yes. Personally I am from one of the moons of Jupiter along with Elvis and Mrs. Adelson. ;)

That is a cool trademark. The person that came up with that one deserves a pat on the back.

Back in the 1960's Sears had a LOT of pull.  So, no surprise that the Magstars bought though a Sears Automotive Center would have a Sears emblem.  By the way, those wheels would have also had black centers.
If you bought parts from them back then (you would have if your Dad had a car from the "big three") you also got to drool over the 289 Display engine that had the "Cobra" manifold, valve covers and T pan.

YES!!!! That is the cap that was on their wheels! Good eye. Very obscure wheel cap for sure.  Penny's had a FOREMOST cap that they used on their 5 spoke  "American copy" wheels "made in Japan" ( not China) by Appliance Plating. Oh the things you know when you're old.

The creativity on that logo is awesome. I looked at it for 10 minutes before seeing the “s” and the “r”

Its on par with the Coralsnake emblem, lol

Do graphic design/illustrations and spend too much of my waking hours looking at details in photos is my excuse
