Great find!

I'll have to scour The Sun for my blue, brown trim 500.  ;)

Good week for both of us as I got a picture of my car from the previous owner this week too.

What a great item to add to your car's documents.

I just love those vintage ads!

How do you research old news papers for the 60's?  I've always wanted to do this but never knew how.

You can go to the state library and look at what they have archived.

There are also antique dealers that specialize in print.

Whitings Old Paper is just up the street from me and, along with magazines, he has a lot of original Richmond area newspapers on hand. He also has a nice selection of vintage NASCAR racing programs.

They are several ways to do it.

The state library might be one resource.

This ad came from newspapers.com

It cost 19.00 for a months access. Make sure you change your settings after you sign up to stop the auto renewal.

I have a list of the newspapers each dealer used.

If you are looking for a specific dealer the newspaper has to be in the database.

Then its just a matter of typing in a couple keywords and dates....

I think I used 1965-1970 for the date range and "shelby dealer" for the search terms.

If you get too many search words it wont work as well. I have gathered several dozen dealership ads from various dealers.

That is so cool Pete.  I am assuming the car in the add you circled is yours?  Now you have piqued my interest so I am going to have to start searching Fogg Motors for March-May of 1968 adds.

Title: Re: Look what I can do!

Too bad they were not required (like some other newspapers of the time) to include license plate numbers so that one could possibly figure out the specific cars.
Title: Re: Look what I can do!
Post by: Coralsnake on November 10, 2018, 07:24:35 AM
Here are some general observations

The California dealers did not have very good ads. The ads I have found tend to be smaller and without pictures. There are a few exceptions.

Some dealers do have very detailed descriptions and it is possible to identify specific cars.

Watkins, Schmidt, Courtesy  and a few others come to mind.

I now declare myself the ad king!

Ref the Schmidt ad:
According to the Marti report on #03562 it was still in Schmidt inventory at the time of this ad. The description of the third car down in the left column matches and its the only blue KR FB, auto, air in the list. However, at the top of the ad they say they have 24 Shelbys but only 21 listed so its possible #03562 had a twin in inventory.

Wouldn't it be cool to identify and locate as many of these cars as possible and get them back together at a convention. Maybe we could get someone to dress in a wide lapel plaid polyester suit to pose as a salesman. I don't have a suit like that but I know I have a tie that would work.

Ted

It was purchased from Gables Lincoln-Mercury in Coral Gables Florida which is gone now (obviously).

It sold for $5,348.76 which is interesting to compare to the prices in your ads.

Pete, I'd love to see an ad from Al Grillo Ford, especially if it shows a GT500 convertible, white with black top and black interior, 4-sp, and air.

My Eminger Report shows it was ordered and was to have a saddle interior. The customer ended up settling for 01425 with the black interior.

I wonder if Grillo Ford would advertise a car that was ordered for a client

Marti Report shows the car was released on Feb 15, 1968.

The docs I got from Mongo are a little hard to read and I think they show that the car:
Shipped to or was Delivered to Lynn, MA on Mar 7, 1968.
Client may have taken delivery on Mar 19 or 20.

If it was on the lot, it might have been some time between Mar 7 and 20.

Anything on Al Grillo's passing would be interesting too. I often wondered how it was covered in the papers.

Finding specific cars is not going to happen. It took about 15 years to find the ad that had the orange Shelby. I will leave that to owners....it certainly wouldn't happen for free!

Not very many dealers listed out every car detail. In fact, very few did.

These advertisements take me back in time when the news papers' most interesting sections to me were:
#3 - the movie schedules (prepping for date nights),
#2 - the comics and puzzles, and
   #1 - the classified ads.

Yes, it was a time when one would see Shelbys, Cobras, and GT350s and GT500s for sale, on a regular basis. Frequently, the Shelbys would be mixed in with the Mustang section, but I remember that Shelbys would sometimes have their own section in the used car ads

I turned 16 in the summer of 1970, so while I could barely afford a used 1965 Mustang, that didn't prevent me from looking for new, left over, and used Shelbys. My buddies and I frequently spent free time walking the dealer lots looking at what we couldn't afford.

I'm lovin' these old ads.

Not sure that we'll ever know what happened to Al Grillo. I live in the next city over from Lynn, Ma. (Peabody, Ma.) and have heard bits and pieces about the dealership for years now. I was born in 1968 so I didn't live through it but just this summer I met a gentleman at a local cruise night who turned out to have been a mechanic at Grillo when he was just 18! His feeling was that Grillo went into hiding or possibly witness protection and was not bumped off. This gentleman was nice enough to part with two original Al Grillo dealer trunk emblems which he had in his tool box for the last 50 years. He also told me that Grillo's daily driver was a black "67 Mustang that the dealership dropped a 427 SOHC motor in. I hope to get together with this former mechanic again and pick at his memory some more. He did not have any photos of the dealership. Feel free to pm me if you'd like a photo of the metal dealer tags I have.
Kind Regards, John

I have been trying to find anything on Pueblo Ford Inc 6420 E 22nd St Tucson AZ (tried the current dealer there and a pueblo ford mustang club) but have not been able to find any vintage memorabilia, pictures, or print that I can put with my 67 that was delivered there in June 1967. If you are out there playing and want to search for another dealer I would appreciate it.  Cool websource.

Coralsnake, do you use this handle because your Shelby is brown on the inside? I thought the only two options were white and black. I do remember some mention of a possible red interior option and if so, which year(s) would that have been possible?
Title: Re: Look what I can do!
Post by: Coralsnake on November 24, 2018, 12:19:28 PM
Yes, "Coralsnake" refers to a 1968 Shelby that is special paint, orange exterior, saddle (brown) interior. The "coral" comes from a previous owner of the car.

The only interior colors for 1968 are black and saddle. I think its about an 85 /15 % split.

thecoralsnake.com is my website and internet ID.

Red, black and white interiors were used in 1969. 1967s used white and black. The white was called parchment.

Ok, so your orange was a special order color in '68? What's it called? I've never seen a red interior '69 or '70. Black and Parchment were the interior colors for '68, as well?
Title: Re: Look what I can do!
Post by: Coralsnake on November 26, 2018, 10:22:06 PM
There was no parchment in 1968.

The orange is the same as the 1969 color, Calypso Coral, but did not have a name in 1968. It was one of six special paint colors used on 1968 Shelbys. It was referenced as WT 5185.

Neighborly? Not in my experience. It was a contest between Gotham and Larsen as to how agressive a dealer could be without being charged with holding a new customer for ransom.

Ask Howard about his first '65. They wouldn't let him leave without buying the car. I asked him if Kolb locked the doors and he just grunted. "Huha!"

The LA paper is full of Shelby license plate numbers...do you have a way to track them?
Title: Re: Look what I can do!
Post by: shelbydoug on December 06, 2018, 12:54:13 PM
Why did the California classifieds put the license plate number in the ads? Was that required? The Brits do that too. Strange?

I haven't kept up with the changes in the laws but Mr.Pardee ran into an issue with the California DMV while doing research on Shelby owners in California for the Registry. The first Registry in '82. As it turns out they have an anti-stalking law and the DMV can't give you owners info from a license plate.

If you are filing a hit and run complaint against another motorist for instance, you have to give that information to your insurance company. I think a licensed Private Detective can get the information also. Individuals cannot get it legally to my knowledge.

I'm not sure exactly what the issue is/was with that, where the legislature felt compelled to pass this law? Many if not most celebs are advised to have their cars registered to a holding company or a LL corp and only shows the name and address of the corp. Cosby's Cobra was registered like that.

Having grown up in LA, and eagerly reading the cars-for-sale ads every Sunday in the Times, I heard that the requirement for either a license plate or a VIN was to cut down on the car dealer "bait and switch" advertising about a car that didn't actually exist, or maybe they only had one at that low low low price.

If the plates stay with a car through it's entire California life, then I suppose that system could work. Here in NY the plates are kept by the previous owner and often would go on the replacement vehicle.

With your expertise maybe you can help. The two Shelby dealers here in Alberta were: Healy Motors in Edmonton (the Edmonton Journal), and Metro Ford in Calgary (Calgary Herald). #2766 was one of only three 500 convertibles delivered to Alberta in 68. Try as I might I have not found a Shelby ad in either paper. If you had the chance would you give it a shot? Thanks in advance.

In 1971 I bought my mustang hardtop, medium options for $3,700. I know that was a lot compared to prices I have seen for cars sold stateside over time.
$5100. Was a big price in 67, for a 350, as in the ad. What would that car have sold for in the U.S.?

With Pete's great work I now have several great ads for framing. Attached is the ad for the blue convertible which as mentioned was wrecked in the 70's.
The original list of over $6100.00 would have been right up there with a well optioned T-Bird or Lincoln, so no surprise they were slow to sell.
Again Pete, thanks +++.

Darn.  Maybe they will chime in.  Thanks!

Being a Harrisburg native, I haunted Francis For Fords constantly during the '60's Shelby era. I saw my first GT 350 there in November of 1965 (6S101 - See photo, that's me sitting in it).

Francis did not do much Shelby advertising but I recall an ad they ran in the Patriot/Evening-News, Harrisburg's daily paper, in early 1967 advertising a batch of '66 GT350H's that they had bought out of the Hertz disposition program. I recall that ad included a photo. This may give you something to search for.

The iconic photo of the '66 350's lined up in front of the Francis showroom appeared in the July 1966 issue of the east coast drag racing magazine Super Stock & Drag Illustrated, as part of an article on the construction of the Turbo Stang, a Turbonique powered '66 Mustang fastback exhibition drag car, which Francis sponsored. I was the one who dug this photo up and originally posted it on SAAC Forum I. It got picked up by various photo sites and is now in general circulation. I have been told there is a color version of this photo, but I have never seen it.

I visited Francis around the time the photo was taken - that is a real R Model at the center, it was on a nationwide tour of Shelby dealers at the time. I encountered it parked parked inside the service department one Saturday and was able to give it a good looking over.

If anyone has any information regarding the whereabouts of 6S101 or the Turbo Stang - I would like to hear from you!

My first job out of art school was at a large graphics company in Alexandria Virginia, just across the Potomac from D.C.

I was Super Stock & Drag Illustrated fan but hadn't paid attention to where the editorial offices were.

One day around '84 or '85 I went out for lunch, and was greeted by a giant dumpster outside our building filled with back issues of Super Stock. Turns out their offices were right next door and they were in the process of moving.

I spent my lunch hour dumpster diving - still have many of the issues I pulled out of there.

Thank you, Bill, for the information about Francis for Ford and the Patriot/Evening news and Turbo Stang.  I did not know about their racing history.  This will help in my search.  Great photos and stories.  Sitting in a GT350 at that age would definitely kindle my love for these cars.  Cool experience!  Thanks for sharing.

Most likely a reproduction, but I have seen a folder of clip art sent to dealers for use in advertising campaigns.

Many of the ads look similar and that is why
