Title: Power Steering Pumps
Post by: propayne on January 07, 2019, 09:18:26 AM
Curious if anyone knows of a source for high quality power steering pumps.

My S code 390 XR7-G Cougar is in need. I've had pumps replaced in various Cougars I've owned through the years, ordering pumps from the usual vendors like NPD, but was wondering if maybe all rebuilt 1968 power steering pumps weren't created equal.

My G was in the beginning of May, 1968.

The basic power steering pump is the same 1967-73 (might go beyond 1973, I don't know).
The basic power steering pump does not include the reservoir, which makes it an assembly. Those then get tags, HEH-BH, HEH-BF, etc.

The only exception, is the 1970 power steering pump used on small block V-8's (6 cylinders?). That one year only pump had a large off set pressure fitting. Requires unique reservoirs and mounting brackets.

Roger Rodes rebuilds them.

Thanks Krelboyne - I've found Rode's Restoration contact info and I will reach out to them.

Rodes does good work, but it won't be concours when you get it back. Insist he doesn't write on your pump for warranty purposes. I asked him not to but he did it anyway, so I was forced to strip the drag link and control valve and re-seal it.
He is also moody and down right hostile at times.  Just a heads up.

Yes, sometimes very nice and accommodating - other times not so

Also important to discuss getting your part(s) back up-front, not exchanging for in-stock rebuilds if that is important to you.

Thanks everyone - and regards the crankiness, seems that is not unusual at all in our hobby  :P

Roger is a seasoned older gentleman. He doesn't do emails, he prefers a fax for order instructions. LOL

Is "seasoned" politically correct speak for Crotchety?  ;D  Some days you call and he'll explain engineering to you, other days it's more like GET OFF MY LAWN!
