A Kiwi memory regarding photography was brought to mind by a recent thread on this site that mentioned the cool digital photography using "painting with light" to achieve amazing effects.

Not to imply that we were the first to do such photography, but at MT in the late '90s, Kiwi led the charge to photograph test cars more vividly than other magazines were doing at the time.

One of the first examples of that was a multiple-day truck torture test in Death Valley.

On the first night of the test after the rest of us had finished up the dusk photo session (and left to take the 50-mile off-road drive back to the hotel for a few hours sleep) Kiwi stayed up, alone, at the desolate location and shot a series of timed exposures of a Jeep with a starry background. His exposures were long enough (over an hour each) to capture the vivid streaking effect of the stars and satellites in the sky.

The Jeep itself, he painted with light from flashlights with colored gels over the lenses.

And that was all done on old school Kodachrome transparency film, without post production digital effects of any kind in our art department.  I don't think Kiwi even got any sleep that night, and yet he was raring to go the next day, like always.

I wish I could put my hands on that issue of the magazine, and post the photo.  It's very cool.

I remember also, one of our advertising salesmen, after the magazine was printed, came into my office with the Jeep photo in hand and said "Wow, was the sky really doing that when you were there?"

I replied "To Kiwi's creative eye, it sure was."

One of our old-time Motor Trend staffers recently journeyed to Kiwi's resting place in Genoa, NV and placed this "bouquet" of 351 Ford pistons/rods (from a Pantera) on our buddy's grave.

Note the inscription.

Kiwi was one of a kind, for sure.  Miss that guy!

Kiwi - as others have said "we miss you" would be true for anybody who has ever met or talked to you.
In my office I still have a few photo's that you took and everyday I look at them and smile.
Thanks for all the joy that you brought to many of us.

Kiwi was a great friend and human being, and lived his life at wide-open throttle.

Many fun memories of driving fast, telling rude jokes, and eating at some truly horrible rural diners.

Hard to believe he's been gone for five years.

Rest In Performance, buddy.

In loving memory of a man and friend who lived life to the fullest, wasn't afraid to say what was on his mind and take it to the limits. The conversations we had about life, people, sprinkled with a little lively banter is dearly missed. Love ya man...  :'(

That's nice to hear and it's good that the siblings all have each other.

I lost my father suddenly when he was 43 and I was 13.

It touches virtually every aspect of your life, and in ways you can't even imagine until you grow up.

I've seen this RIP every time I'm on this site and wondered : who was this beloved  bloke ? So—thanks for referring me us to his website.

I see he had three kids.

Did someone at SAAC think set up a college fund for his kids? I'll be the first to donate a little bit if someone is serious about setting it up.

I set up a  go fund me site for a cousin bitten by a mosque and ended up paralyzed. Yep—paralyzed. Different topic. My point—GoFundMe me is expensive—they take a big bite out of contributions. We'd be etter off setting up a tax free fund-this is where the CPA comes into it.

Thoughts?

Had lots of crazy fun times with him over the 20+ years we were buddies and in the magazine world.

So sad, I just read KIWI passed. My condolences. Yes, we had fun with him over at Motor Trend TV.
I remember KIWI had to sell (auction) his 1969 Camaro convert to buy a Volvo 'for the family' as he said. We gave him crap about it! He laughed. RIP, "stinky". IF you know him, you know why he was called that!

^^^ We learned the hard way to not follow Kiwi into a Death Valley abandoned mine.   Fart & Run was his favorite game.   Stagnant air made it particularly deadly.

Miss ya, old pal. Burnouts and irreverent laughter forever.

A week ago, I was in touch with most of the MT staff from the good ol' days, on a group email, and we've vowed to have another Kiwi Memorial Drink & Feast at his favorite El Coyote Mexican restaurant in Hollywood.

With most everyone now scattered across the country, I sure hope we can pull it off.

I'll be there, even if it's just me.
