You might be familar with a “dual serial” number car in 1968, but has anyone here seen a “triple serial number” car?
Yes, they do exist, although they are extremely rare....
-
What a tease
M.

How are you defining this? I've seen maybe two '68 Shelbys that had the Ford number stamped, not under the Shelby VIN tag but alongside of it. It might have even been stamped there twice and is was crooked at that.
I don't remember where I saw the car but likely at one of the Conventions and on display in the Popular vote show? Maybe at one of the Charlotte's?
Is that the car(s) you are talking about? Maybe there were two? I don't remember that as an 8D car though?

My car has a double stamp, (same VIN stamped twice, just offset a little bit) does that count?

If you mean the Ford VIN stamped 3 times on the body ( not counting buck tag, door data plate, windshield VIN tag, engine and transmission stamping ) , then yes. If you mean three different VIN's then no.
-
Not talking about Ford VIN stampings, but the Shelby serial numbers stamped three times into the tags.
;)
-
Same number three times? Or three different numbers?
-
Dual serial number on one tag (as common to very early built cars) plus
A second Shelby “snake” VIN tag with the third number mounted on the door face; replacing the warranty tag

Then no, but I want PICTURES!
-
Okay, I can do that..
-
Original VIN tag on inner fender apron

-
Another original tag on the back of the door, with two more serial numbers. Presto! Triple serial number car.
I believe these were built on Day 1 of production only. I suspect there are less than 20 of these cars in total.
I do have some other similar examples

What about the buck tag since we're "talking" Shelbys?????
Quad serial number cars!!! 8)
Now if the warranty card section of the door tag was not removed - then we have 5 not counting the windowshield VIN tag :)
Have some examples also - likely some of the same you have Pete

Looks to be the same (the tag) as a dual VIN car just located in a different place. I would still call it a dual serial numbered car, as it only has 2 different VIN's.
-
Yes, but it has two VIN plates.... :D
-
I was wondering on these dual serial numbered cars witch number would have been it's official titled with VIN? Anyone care to share?
-
Looks to me like an attemp to restamp & correct the dual stamped tag & how do u know which tag was where when new as cars been repainted & rivets are different?
-
Good point, Ed. One of the other examples I have the tags are reversed, with the dual serial numbers under the hood and the single number on the door face.
I think this was day 1 attempt at vehicle ID and they quickly returned to underhood VIN and warranty plate configuration. Then the next change was to phase out the dual serial number tags all together.
-
I find it suspicious also. If you've got "20" more then it's significant. Are early '68s missing warranty tags in large batches?
As asked previously though, I can envision an issue with the local DMV with a car with two serial numbers on the tag. It may not have been a sinister modification.
-
There is little doubt that discountinuation of the “dual serial” tags was related to registration.
The “triple serial” number cars are merely an interesting footnote to that.
-
Sure… triple serial number cars... very interesting, but... whats the temperature there today???
That's what everybody really wants to know. ::)
-
No matter how you spin it this car still only has 2 different serial numbers not three.

Car(s)? You know of more then just this one?
-
Yes, thats why I believe it was practice for a short time

Yes, thats why I believe it was practice for a short time
Do you have any documentation of that, i.e., other cars done the same way?

So where are the pictures of the other cars? What I found interesting as the Registrar was that someone had something unusual and out of the norm, they would "stay away" from me, probably under the fear that their car was either counterfeit or somehow a freak that was going to get called out as bogus and humiliated.
-
On file with the Registrar.....and in my personal files.

VIN on passenger side dash is the official one.
