Title: SAAC4 June 28 - 30, 1979
Post by: jguyer on February 09, 2018, 03:25:19 PM
Found a roll of negatives from SAAC4, put a few on random pictures. Found 4 more rolls, actually they are in sleeves. Thought I would start a new topic.

I'd like to see them all. I was there in Downingtown for SAAC 4, and at that time the Country was the middle of the gas embargo. We loaded up with extra five gallon cans of gas to make sure we had enough fuel to get there and back. Denny

Reply #4 remember when women wore pants that flattered their figures?

Reply #13 back when having wide tires for more contact patch was desired over the cheap skinny garbage the factory put on the cars to satisfy the bean counters.

I'm getting a kick out of all the 70's white lettered tires that are nowhere to be found today.
The red '67 has the Magstar inner sections painted red. That's a new one too me!

Thanks for continuing to post these.

To reply #28,

Those are the rear brake cooling scoops. That Cobra had a body that was specially developed for a SAI team competition 427 Cobra. The  SAI team Cobra was stripped of its body and sold to the owner of this chassis as it had been in an accident and needed new body panels, the chassis that the body was removed from was sold to a buyer in Japan.

I believe CSX2550 is the same car present at the MCR group at 1977 Carnival of Cars at the Packard Proving Grounds.
The red paint shows up different in this photo.
XGT-3  (#3) is alongside with Don Eichstead standing behind the MK-II.

John,
The banking is evident in my photo, I didn't get more than 1/2 way up at 110 mph in 6S283.
Larry un-corked the side pipes and really opened up CSX2550, the 1st time I heard a small block cobra at full throttle,
I don't know what speed he hit on that track but he was really moving.

The only regret was XGT-3 was taken around at a leisurely pace, I would have loved hearing that 7 liters wide open,
I do remember it didn't like to idle under 2,000~2,500 rpm.

Thanks for the photos
jp

That was a fun convention. Wife and I drove all through the night from NW Ohio with 2 full extra cans of gas in the trunk. Met a guy there that had an early black '67 like mine and we struck up a friendship. I ended up being his best man in his wedding and we're still great friends to this day. Like Rick K. said many times...the conventions start out as all about the cars, but eventually it's about the cars and the people.

Because of gas crisis, no track was planned. But that didn't stop Kopec from wasting gas with a road rally.

Intermeccanica Italia Spyder

Wow, even in '79 the rust appears to be running rampant on this one.

Thanks Richstang,

Somebody sent me a newsletter from the Intermaccanica club ages ago, I don't know why, but I still have it around here some place. Then again, I have a lot of things around here, someplace. Kids are going to curse me when I'm gone.

I took the pitted bezels off my KR convertible. I liked the look, eventually put on 64 T-Bird bezels rather than the 65 type, still have them.

I'm not used to seeing the naked taillights on a '68. Was that a popular customizing trick?

FWIW, a few comments on earlier posts in this thread: #18 is Bill Bradford in CSX 3168. #20 is Fred Freer's CSX 3153. Don't recognize the geeky photographer by the left rear fender. #21 is my CSX 3227, with CSX 2099 in front of it, and 2054 in front of that. #26 - in the center is Connie Moore's CSX 3031, with Connie in a deck chair in the photo below it. #27 is Bill and Bud Jones' CSX 3102, with the alloy body off 3005 and its unusual scoops. A lot of water over the dam since these were shot.

It's like they were really trying to screw up that passenger's side fender between the hippy chick sitting on it, and the moron using it as a platform for hand stands.  I wonder if the current owner has ever seen these pics?

At first glance, I thought the Webers were on the Tiger :o

I think that was Inglese's Cobra. It was a strange color red. I think Porsche red?

The 289 Cobra had a fiberglass body on it. I think that's the one Ken Young had? In fact, that may be Young doing handstands on the hood? Better his car then mine right Ken?

The red 68 GT350 Convertible might have been Jeff Howard's?

These were the days that we had a lot of Tigers, Panteras, Griffiths and even a Mangusta here and there show up at our events. What happened to that?

I remember the black Boss 302 with Webers. I haven't seen it since then.

This is about the time that Dan Firsthand's 65 GT350 would show up all the way from Texas. That car had a Boss 302 with Webers also.

In Reply #140, check out the guy with the antique video camera...its long cable is connected to the recording deck on the ground.

I had one kind of like that. It was an early Sony Betamax. Pretty cumbersome to haul around all that gear, as I recall. And the battery life was only about 30 minutes.

Kids today just don't appreciate...

These photos are so cool!!  All these folks, do they still own these AC's? Back in the late 70's, They had to know these Cobras were something special, even like looking into a crystal ball, that in the future they would be worth a lot of dough.  But probably didn't realize in the late 70's they would rocket into the $$ stratosphere.

While some may question the style of the day, there was something special about trying to look nice for the evening dinner and program.

That is a really insightful post. I think I’ll step it up just a bit—no —I don’t wear ties anymore. But a dinner jacket and dress shirt-that got some class down the road.

Thanks,

Well, that's all I have. Anyone else have something to add?

A lot of good memories. The gas crisis is hard to relate to now, price may be considered high but no problem getting it. Some people have gone on to other things and cars have changed hands. If you don't know where they are, at least in my mind they are out there enjoying and being enjoyed.

John,

I know I'm repeating myself, but thank you again for posting all of these photos from way back when. It's really nice to see photos of these cars, some original, some with owners custom touches, as well as a few of the people who were there enjoying the meet.

Well Done Sir!

I'd forgotten this thread.  It was my second convention, the first being Hershey.  I posted a bunch of photos from this one on my website (http://www.s-techent.com/Shelby_Web_Pages//Galleries/SAAC_Conventions/SAAC4/SAAC4.htm (http://www.s-techent.com/Shelby_Web_Pages//Galleries/SAAC_Conventions/SAAC4/SAAC4.htm)).  These photos were shot with a Kodak Instamatic.

This was a great convention, I drove there in 006, about a hundred mile trip each way. It doesn't show up in any of these photos, but does appear in the convention article in the Marque, then the club newsletter. I could pick it out as it had Cragar S/S wheels on it at the time.

Beyond the attention to how well dressed many were for the evening program, has anyone noticed how FIT looking everyone is in these photos? Contrast that with the girth of many attendees at events today, and I am not referring to the usual pounds we oldsters have accumulated since then!
