Title: 1970 GT 350 Air Cleaner/S Tube
Post by: Stubee on February 10, 2018, 03:00:02 AM
Congrats on getting the Forum back up.

Is there and S Tube on the air cleaner assembly for a 1970 Shelby GT 350 California emission car?
I have seen pics with and without. Perhaps a few good pics would help if there are any out there.

Many thanks gents.

Originally they came with a heat shield where the upper part served the purpose of an S tube on a big block (connecting the heat shield to the air cleaner snorkel)

"I have seen pics with and without."  Guess you have been looking at pictures of cars on the internet - not IMHO a real good way to determine what was factory.  Heat shields rust out on some, while on others owners just leave them off after a rebuild or when they swap out the exhaust manifolds for headers.

Ok Jeff thank you. I am great full to have this quality of information first hand.

Can you steer me to the Concours Quality parts I would need to put an S Tube in place. I assume there is a manifold component as well.

I noticed on another California car that the S Tube was in place as well as a paper type corrugated  Tube on the passenger side of the air cleaner. It was about three feet long and a one once diameter.

Rust may have been an issue with some cars, I think the day two mods and Holley carbs had a lot of owners jettison some of these items early in many cars lives.

If you have a good picture of the by 350 setup that would be great. I will order the parts you suggest.

Many thanks Jeff,

Stubee

I had a look around at the various suppliers and haven’t had any luck finding the manifold shield and s Tube for the 351W.

Where should I be looking for these items?

Many thanks in advance,

Stubee

Maybe the california heat shield was different than non-california heat shields - not sure. However, this link below shows the way my 69 shelby gt350 came from the factory.  My car was initially sold in california.  The heat shield and s tube are 1 piece.

we have some 351 w heatshields on ebay now under meyercars    i  collected them back years ago on west coast rust-free ford parts buying trips as these shields are always rusted away out east. These  351 w shields have not been repoed like the 302 has & price depends on condition of rust pitting . we also have 351w snorkels of which are 351w only that the heat shield attaches to.

Just to Clarify what Ed said- the shields are the same and Ed has some on ebay at a reasonable price IMO.

+1 on them being the same. Saw a rust free one at the swap meet a couple weeks back

Thanks fo the replies guys. That helps me a lot. The pictures and the explanations made it very clear.
Only problem is I went into the meyerscars store and am like a kid in a candy shop. I’ve been there before and loved the parts that were sent.

Many thanks again,

My car is missing the heat shield and snorkel. After reading above I want to ensure I understand correctly; all cars including CA cars came with the same heat shield and snorkel? Does anyone have a picture of what it's should look like on the car? Thanks.

Yes you understand correctly. The heat shield and snorkel are typically the same regardless. Review reply #4 for a link to a heat shield picture.

the 69 -70 351 w mach 1 & shelby  gt 350 heat shield & snorkle are both unique & no repo made & i recently uncovered some that were hidden under other parts ( imagine that) from years ago parts trips out west so i have several to choose from if needed  also air cleaners & price determines condition as heat shields start at 125 & snorkles start at 50

Yes all the same all 50 states had the same requirements related to emissions in 68 & 69

Pictures - Yes of course ;)

You are most likely referring to the engine lift hook . They were supposed to be taken off the regular Mustang engines when installed according to assemblyline instruction . Sometimes they were left on. The overwhelming majority of the time left on 390 and 428 engines because they were hard to get to once the engine was installed. On the small block however they were easy to reach and remove and more times removed.  It is my belief that the highly styled engine of a Shelby with the special valve covers aluminum intake etc. was given special attention and the lift hooks were removed more often. I have not seen lift hooks left on any of the  67,68,69/70 Shelby GT350's survivor cars that I have observed over the years which is the bases for my belief. Others that are my peers may think differently. I think the lift hooks detract from and do not add to the look on a Shelby. I would rather not see them on a concours original Shelby because of that . Just my opinion.

Looking at jeff s. 351 w engine photo the heatshield goes on first next to manifold & lift hook is last so it can be removed like some were even thou i have found alot of those lift hooks over the years at swap meets & junkyards so many stayed on the engines.

Those are the 351 W engine lift hooks.

I would like to see how the bolts and studs work for the attachment of the hooks and heat shield.

I just ordered my parts from Special Ed. Now I just need the proper fasteners..

Looks like AMK Exhaust manifold bolt set RLK 6 and AMK Engine lift hook fastener kit AMK352 will do it. Could and expert weigh in on those items and steer the newbies along :)

For Jeff: would you happen to have a few more pics to show how the hooks and the shield are attached with the hardware?

Thanks for the interest in the topic. This is one area that has always been a frustration. The info from the veterans about the 351 W is very much appreciated and explains why there just are limited parts out there for this area.

GT350 #2060 still wears her original lift hooks. :)

Just curious is the heat shield mounted on #2060 on the outside of the hooks or inside against the manifold?
Do you have a picture of the hooks and heatshield on the car?

It seems there were many variations on lots of things during production. Always fun to see the exceptions.

Thanks everyone for the input,

The lift hooks mount on the outside to make removal easier. Like Bob G said, they should have been removed but at least one set (2060) didn't get removed.   :o

The lift hooks do get in the way of changing 2 of the spark plugs so I leave them off my car.  It takes me all of 45 minutes to change the plugs on my GT350, which is about 4 hours less than on my ex '68 KR.   ;D

Agree with others that the earlier picture I posted appears to have the hooks under the shield and last nut. Good thing none of them caught it any of the times it was judged. ::)

In any case here is another picture of a very low mileage 1969 351 W with the hooks left on. Its blown up from a larger picture so sorry the resolution isn't better. The attaching nuts are thin so don't use normally type ones.

Arrows indicate

Red - Washer (painted when engine was painted)
Green - Stud nut (painted when engine was painted)
Purple - Engine hook
Gold -  Outer unpainted thin nut

Heat shields location/order does not appear visible - its pretty thin from this angle

Hope this helps

One other point is the color probably won't match the engine color since the lift hooks were painted by the vendor. Mine were a lighter "Ford blue".

The inside bottom...(under where the filter sits) was painted black. The rest is blue.
