This artwork was used by AMT models as the box art for the original issue of their '68 GT500 kit in 1968. The artwork setting is an actual place - the entrance to the Turf Club at Hollywood Park thoroughbred horse racing track in Los Angeles. The piece was likely inspired by an early '68 Shelby promotional photo taken there in the summer of 1967. That photo can be seen on the Styles Collection web site - the link is https://stylescollection.zenfolio.com/p359848467/h6d40915#h52cabbb

This kit also contained a record of Carroll Shelby narrating driving a lap around Riverside Raceway in the '67 Super Snake GT00. Here is a link to hear the record:

Ewww, this thread is right up my alley.

In fact, the first two posts are scans that I made from my collection. The first being a Ford Annual Report and the second from an issue of Sports Car Graphic. That Cougar illustration is a two page spread and it took me awhile to remove the "gutter" in Photoshop.

Speaking of AMT box art, below is a scan I made of an original illustration that I couldn't resist purchasing when it became available.

I think the setting for that illustration is some sort of a horse show or competition and the # on the jacket has to do with that.

Phillip thanks for the two '67 ad illustrations, the second one is clear enough to see the upper scoop lights on the two Shelby's.

Phillip,

Nice job removing "the gutter" from this Cougar illustration - Well Done! I too know how much work that can be, especially when there's an actual gap that may be left between the pages to make the proportion of the image itself correct. "Gutter" is a new term to me, but I like it a lot and (with your permission) that is what it will be known as to me in the future!

The 1968 AMT Shelby model box art that is posted in this thread is actually a scan that I did from my rather "weathered" original box, and which I had posted on Forum 1.0 back in the day. Check out what it looked like when I first scanned it. It didn't have a gutter, but it wasn't very pretty after the initial scan:

But after a lot of cleaning of the "dirt" and removing of the box wrinkles, it turned out pretty nice:

Excellent job Kieth - it's kinda fun using the "rubber stamp" tool in Photoshop, or if a section is missing, finding another part of the illustration/photo to grab from.

Feel free to use "gutter" - that is a term from my old paste-up days before the computer.

No problem Chris - I scan and post stuff from my collection so it can be shared.

If I remember correctly, the Sports Car Graphic article that the Cougar illustration was from was written by Jerry Titus.

I will post some more stuff that I have and try to find some things I haven't posted yet.

Great thread!

Cool Castrol ad from a racing program I have.

More effective than photography, in my very biased opinion  ;D

Looks like they included those ten spokes as an optional custom touch in the regular AMT annual Mustang kit from '68. Interesting they didn't include the more correct wheel covers instead.  ;D

This is a scan from one of my most prized possessions - a calendar that AMT offered in 1968 that featured the box art from all of their kits that year.

Wish I had a better scan - this is by one of my personal artist type heroes, Ed "Newt" Newton.

Newton did a lot of the work that came out of Roth Studios (Ed "Big Daddy" Roth") in the 1960s.

Oh yeah - drew all of the time as long as I can remember and have managed to make a career of it. Got in trouble in class for doing that or reading comic books.

Rat Fink, Weird-Ohs, Monsters, Hot Rods, Rock 'n' Roll, Hot Wheels - I mean, whoever was the first to combine Hot Rods, Monsters and Rock 'n' Roll was a genius in my book.

Yes!!  Constantly.  My fav was drawing the Red Baron Hot Rod designed by Tom Daniel. Of course, I didn't know the designer when I was in 7th grade.  We (my Buddies), loved drawing these hot rods back in the day (circa 1975). We also drawed action heros!!

I'd give my eye teeth to have kept some of those drawings.

Yes, they don't look like they're either bored out of their minds, or ready to kick someone's ass.

Today's look is too hard-edged, IMO.

Yes, and it isn't getting them married or even any dates for that matter.  They better invest in their cat lady starter kits and enjoy solitude with kitty litter boxes.

Kinda surprising I've never ever seen those on a Cougar.

Artist is Ed Gullett, Fayettville, Georgia. He was very active in SAAC for years. Did a lot of illustrations
for Rick and the club and always had a tent with a lot of originals and prints at the swap meets. Great guy.

Thanks Mike - that is a cool example of vintage car art.

I have a series of those Cougar concept paintings copied from when they were originally posted (can't remember when or where) and I have them saved as by Dean Beck - so I assume he is the artist.

Here is one I really love featuring very stylized art of a '70 Cyclone.

Oh well - It's old artwork but unpublished plus I want to have my Shelby posts keep up with my Cougar posts.

This is something I did while in high school - all kinds of funky things going on (I didn't even know how to use oval templates then so the tires and wheels are farged up). Plus I put LeMans stripes on it!

But -

It proves I've been a long time Shelby fan even though Mercury Cougars are my #1.

Yep, did that in 1978 when I was 17 using model paint rattle cans with acrylic washes.

It has that pre-computer, warm, 1970s "analog" feel to it - but it is amateurish. I was trying hard to figure things out.

Again, thanks for the compliments - especially on something I did in my youth.

Even though it has it's problems (which stick out to me like a sore thumb), I think my passion for the design of the '67 Shelby managed to come through.

2112, your comment actually got me to thinking that Photoshop would allow me to address the issues with the tires and wheels (along with trying different colors).

When I get some time I'll do that and then maybe make some posters available in the "for sale' section of the forum.
