Title: OK... Let's talk about the Forum
Post by: computerworks on July 25, 2019, 09:01:48 PM
We see some turmoil here.. and that's distressing.

Let's try and set this state of things straight. I do not want to pontificate with a long dialog.. just want to get us calibrated.

We all at HQ have been quite preoccupied with the pre and post convention work for SAAC-44.
(...which I might add was a very successful event, on many levels.. thanks to the hundreds of hours of work by many.)

It might be good to state why we have this Forum in the first place.
It was designed 11 years ago to be a place where our SAAC family can gather and interact online.

It was always meant to be cordial, casual and informative. A place to ask tech questions, sell a car, buy a part.. or just chat with other like-minded people. It also grew to be a place for Regional Clubs to have a place to communicate, without requiring them to have their own forum or website.
It has always been open to SAAC members and non-members alike.

And.. it has always been moderated with the presumption that everyone is a grown-up and can play nicely. No heavy handed lifeguard... just intervention when things go off the asphalt.
There are no multi-page complex rules to play here... again, we are all grown-ups.
You will find trouble here is you violate some simple rules...
Pretty simple and straightforward?

Most of the posting areas relate to car topics and details; we have the Lounge for social and/or off car-topic posts.
It is really hard to break these rules.  11 years has proven that we, as a group, are quite good at self policing.
No one can deny that any reported post or action has not gone unnoticed or not dealt with in a civil manner. We have not had to ban anyone in many years and issues are dealt with as they arise.

It is very important to note that .. any Forum is ONLY AS GOOD as its members. We have quite a collection of people who are the best in the hobby as far as knowledge, tenure, enthusiasm and willingness to share.
We need these folks to balance out the newbies and the visitors looking in earnest to learn.
It's our job at HQ to provide the best venue for this.. so we allow all corners of the hobby to be discussed...within the simple guidelines above.

-to be continued-

Recently, a thread about the C8 in the Florida Regional Forum caught fire.

Not surprising – a Ford vs Chevy topic.

But it spawned many concerns that need to be addressed.

First,  Regional Forums are there for the purpose of the region; if it's not your region, you are not compelled to visit, read or reply.
This one spilled in the street and opened up a lot of angst toward the author and his antics. Many asked why Tony is a Forum Moderator. He is not. He is just a mod within the FL regional forum...as a few others are mods in their own areas. Simply to allow cleanup there when necessary.

Many have expressed dislike over the topics he has posted. I have spoken with Tony and we have an agreement as to the nature of any future posts.

I have also communicated with a few folks who have contacted HQ with concerns over the Forum's integrity.
We are still in 110% and as, from the beginning, the forum quality is made by the members themselves.

HQ is here to make it a pleasant place to visit and gently provide the law and order.

No one wants to see anyone leave for a reason that could be addressed and corrected... that much is quite clear.
We want to hear what has your ire.. what can be done to improve the atmosphere... let us know.

To help smooth the environment and address some concerns sent to us... we have loaded a software feature that will let you IGNORE any sub forum and have it NOT appear in the Recent Post List.

To install this feature go to your Profile in the top menu

Choose Modify Profile and click on Ignore Board Options

Check the boxes of the Sub Forums that you do not want to see in the recent Post list

Then Save the changes by clicking Change Profile in the bottom right corner

This could reduce some blood pressures, in some small way.

Remember, this is a place that should be an escape from real life.. and fun to visit.
Be civil, think before you post and always let us know when things get ugly.

Thanks
Ron

It must be working I redid my profile and checked the box as instructed . It has been over a hour which by now there would have been at least two obscure car shows or a fishing report from a certain down south state posted.

Thank you Ron,

I found myself pretty withdrawn from the forum for a while there. Not to the the point of abandoning completely as some have felt, but more of a disenchanted feeling. Thanks again. Great job. I have a Diet Coke for you.

Thank you for explaining this. Sometimes I am a little slow on the intake. I have been studying Shelbys for 35 years and still haven't figured that out .

I think this option will help everyone filter things they don' t need.

Life is good.

Looks like a.....   Win, win, win, situation. One has decided to stick around, Pete and friends,  (Tour guide Tony) can give us updates from Florida, and the rest can choose to ignore all the BS if they choose. I am glad as a group we can figure out  these complicated issues. At ease men... Back to the SHELBYS!

"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!"   Seriously now , we MUST appreciate the latitude  we are allowed by this forum as I previously mentioned. Look at how "proper" inquiries ( instead of "visible" bitching) has created a solution! PMs allow you to air you feelings without comments associated with the NATURAL difference of opinion MANY have and are entitled to. However when those PMs speak of a common situation , the situation can be resolved as in this case.
NOW we can focus our efforts ( possibly) on enhancing the "magnetism" that draws people to "The best damn Shelby site there IS"
         Many thanks Ron.

You didnt miss anything.

The forum is just providing away for frequent visitors to control what appears in the recent posts section.

You may choose to edit some boards out. They dont go away, the just dont appear on the list.

You can still see them it just takes a little more effort.

Unless I'm wrong, I believe badges are assigned individually as opposed to globally.

In order to assign badges each user profile needs to be modified to add the badge. On top of this, each member needs to be verified as a member and that info is more than likely in a separate database.

Read: labor intensive

Thanks for the badge Ron. Sorry if I came across a bit strong the last few days.  My wife says I'm 'passionate'.  :)

Thanks Ron,

I think Politics is another "no no" that should be on your list.

Tragically, because of leftist idiots politics will have an affect on our vehicles and ability to use them they do have a place here at times They have been plotting for some time to tax them and limit use. Some states have already done so. There have been several bills that didn't quite make it, but close.
Then Ron takes down a post because another disillusioned individual here decides that those of us with legal carry should have their rights violated by the SAAC.
at any rally or meet.  Really? TDS is a mental illness. It's what started the exchange.
I am federally licensed. It doesn't matter what your preferences are, they don't apply to me or those who carry. I carry under HR 218 as well and onto the flight deck EVERY time I fly.  It's to make sure those in my charge are safe. I have carried ALL my adult life between military service, law enforcement and as a retired CHP. After 911 many of us carry on board. It's FOR YOUR safety as well.
It's always someone from NY or CA.  Brainwashed sheep.
That is why I was angry and Ron didn't have the audacity to explain or reply in messages when I questioned his decision to remove one person's comments and not the instigator. Funny, both are from NY so likely the same mental mindset.

I'll give you a pass on this one post.. to make some points publicly.

First, SAAC can't violate your rights.. and when you are on this forum.. you waive quite a few rights.
It's our forum and we make the rules.... don't like them? Sorry.

I don't need to moderate with audacity.. I am quite peaceful and rarely get agitated by what anyone says...like now.

Your whole post is out of line and really needs to be said elsewhere.
Try not to be a such a geo-bigot if you plan to stay here.

Title: Re: OK... Let's talk about the Forum
Post by: 1967 eight barrel on July 28, 2019, 04:28:24 AM
Geo-bigot. Now that's hysterical. Nice label. My daughter lives in NY. My wife is from NY and I spent 37 years of my life in Commiefornia.  My statements about the state of affairs that puts those who gave nothing and invade this nation in front of those who served the state and the nation and were injured in the line of duty is spot-on. I served with honor and distinction for a SECOND time with an oath to serve and protect ALL Citizens.  I honored it. However, I have spent 20 years in litigation for what was owed me.
Perhaps you may actually try being sympathetic to my plight.
I gave you an opportunity to speak with me privately when this first reared it's ugly head. You elected not to, nor even respond to my message in PM.
Then Shelby Doug spewed his crap about how the SAAC would be at risk to allow people like me to exercise their right to carry at an event. You deleted my comments and left Doug's blathering response.
Perhaps you should apologize for your bigoted biased views of rights asserted by the Constitution of The United States and licenses issued locally and federally.
I won't allow you or anyone else to minimize my ability to respond.
I am not here to stir the pot, but you even allowed 427 Heaven's Trump Derangement Syndrome to stay up. I simply responded. I know you personally don't like me, and I actually don't care. I paid in BLOOD for what you and so many others take for granted.
Now I am done with this providing it dies. If you want to converse I'd be glad to do so via private message or I'll even call you.

If you're going to apply rules they apply to all, not just those you agree with.
