Title: What will The Bullitt Mustang sell for?
Post by: Chad on October 01, 2019, 03:49:37 PM
I know it is not a Shelby but most certainly is one of the coolest Mustangs ever.  So the Bullitt "hero" fastback is going up for auction at Mecum in January.  What do you think it hammer for?

Surely at least 7 figures, might bring out some Hollywood buyers...

I am saying $8 million. Depending of course who are among the bidders.

It will go for "a lot", but the exact number could be about anything.

I'm wondering if the car is already suffering a bit from over-exposure.  The thrill may be diminished by all the public showings (that were designed to hype interest/price.)

I'm not tired of the car, but once you've seen and read about it a gazillion times in the past year, it's no longer anything that I rush to see coverage of.

Other thoughts?

It's a Holy Grail piece that someone out there has coveted for decades and now has the money to buy.

That is 250 GT SWB territory.

It might break 7 figures, but I doubt much more than that.

Its very interesting, I think what may take a little wind out of the sail is that its not the only Bullitt  car.  The new owner is going to have one of two,..A little different that one of one, the only one. Still the most iconic Mustang in history in my opinion.  When the smoke clears I wouldn't be shocked if its around 2 mil.

Don't believe IMHO you can compare the two cars. But all it takes is one potential owner for either of them to take price further than anyone would suspect or recommend

I don't think it will sell.  I think it's all hype for meecum and to get a gauge to the value of the car.

But I guess it's no reserve, so that blows my theory.

with all due respect beg to differ, whom ever buys this bullitt mustang will have the original 1 of 1 true bullitt

this particular vehicle has a paper trail since it left hollywood with mostly all its sheet metal and parts still intact

it has been kept by the current family for many consecutive decades

car number two was a carcass when it was found

can't and shouldn't compare this bullitt # 1 to the other car

just my two cents

please note pictures #1 #2 are of bullitt 559 car to be sold in 2020

pictures #3 #4 are of bullitt 558 or the chase car

Driven by the King of Cool in the car chase that defined all others and mostly still as original as when retired? $8 million. Hey check what the Batmobile sold for a while back...$4.6 million and that car was driven around by a bat.

It's going to sell for alot more then any current owner paid.

Dicky Smothers used to walk around complaining that he couldn't afford to buy back "his" Cobra because his previous ownership made the value exorbitant? Sure Dicky, it was you.

Complain to Tommy. He made you sell it.

Why not get all crazy with it? My guess - $12+ million

Substantially original
Driven by, but to his chagrin, not owned by Steve McQueen
Paper trail with impeccable provenance
Listed in the National Historic Vehicle Registry
The Porsche 917 used in his film LeMans sold for $14+mil
What else is a multi-millionaire going to do with their spare cash?

I don't think that Ford would buy it because they've already gotten all their publicity out of it for the cost of shipping it around.  It's about to become old news, from their PR standpoint.

A guy like Leno might want it, and has the pockets to bid it to whatever it takes to win. Tough to call a price when two of those guys get into a bidding war.

I'll put in a guess at $3.1M

Whenever I've read about how to build a Bullitt replica etc. it has said the rear tail panel was blacked out along with the taillight bezels.
Doesn't look like the original car has those features.

Actually, you should see all the iron reinforcement that's attached the bottom of the car.  It's something like 1 inch square tubing that runs the width of the car.  That alone has to be worth something.  ;D

I'll say $1 million even.  There is no way this car is selling for $12 million.  Not a chance that this car will sell for near the same price as CSX2000, no freakin way.  I'll put large sums of money on that.

I know I'm sticking my neck out, but...outside of Shelby lovers, I think the appeal of the Bullitt car is broader than CSX2000.  Bullitt carries the appeal of movie, Mustang and Steve McQueen lovers. Check out the price bump for any car / motorcycle related Steve McQueen items.

And, there are only a small number of cars (26 total) that are in the National Historic Vehicle Registry. Don't know if that will have impact, but still a differentiator among different vehicles.

As Dana Mecum said (and I quote), "This ain't no car! This is a piece of pop culture!"

Actually, it can be both. 🤪

Is there a 20 year old who just won the Power Ball? That's who will buy this thing.

You can't go with anything that an auctioneer says. They are the same as a traveling circus side show barker selling maybe rubber bands as classic IQ boosters from the '50s for $10 each with a certificate of authentication signed by the Ring Master...serial numbered too.

Maybe one of the museum/collector guys?  Hendrick, Simeone, Staluppi, Leno etc.

I'm thinking John Staluppi.  He just sold everything and started over.

If you are headed to the auction in Kissimmee Florida and you are a current MCA member.

You are eligible for complementary Mecum bidders and admissions passes. Contact the MCA directly.

Then they HE may have to get this to have a place to write the check:

Active bidding into the millions by dedicated McQueen/Bullitt fans but as the price climbs there will be a small number (2?) of corporate/ultra wealthy bidders who are less interested in the car and more interested in stoking their egos so they can claim ownership of the car. The winning bidder won't even miss the millions they will spend to call it their own. I'll make an additional prediction that a few years into the future the car will be sold at auction again for a huge loss.

Must respectfully disagree with your assumption that it will be resold in a few years for a loss.

You forget that this is a new piece of Americana when it was designated and placed in the National Historic Registry

"the Chicago Daily Herald on January 16, 2018.

WASHINGTON — The Historic Vehicle Association this week announced that a 1968 Mustang Fastback, serial No. 8R02S125559 from the 1968 movie "Bullitt," was selected as the 21st automobile on the National Historic Vehicle Register."

I mentioned the National Historic Vehicle Registry as one of the reasons I guessed so high. But I think that the buyer at this auction will likely be someone out of the country, probably someone most people have never heard of (Sheik Yerbooty perhaps?). They'll show off their trophy for a few years, tire of it and then send it on it's way where it will be purchased for a sum more in line with other guesses in this pool. It's not what I would wish for this car - I'd love to see Chad McQueen or another family member or a true automotive enthusiast obtain what Steve could not, but at an auction cash is king. There are people in this world with stupid amounts of money and the desire to own something as rare as that car. I actually think my guess may be on the low side, but I'm still $4 million higher than the next guesser. All I know for sure is - it won't be me. (But I'll be there watching!)

2. I heard Rick might throw in a shirt.
3. Howard might take a photo with you or show us his tattoos.

5. I'll sign ur Registry.

You have to think; the car is probably already sold and the process of sending through the auction is just for Mecum's benefit! Advertising and drawing card!  Also you have to think that the owner has it in his head that the car is worth several million dollars.  So I seriously doubt it will sell for anything below 3 million.  Just my train of thought.

Seems there was/were other cars that sold very quick - and to some too low - that ended up with the Mecums ???

THAT is a fact!

Good poem.  I liked it.  And I had to look up "anthropocene."  "The current geological age, viewed as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment."  Great word!  Thank you!

I think it's a mistake to sell that car at no Reserve. My number is 4.5 million but you never know. I remember the look of absolute disgust on the owner's face when the hammer dropped on "The Last Sting Ray" at Barrett Jackson in 2007. I was to to the left of the stage on the floor right where the cars come up the ramp watching. It hammered for $600,000. He was expecting A LOT more. At least I got to see the Super Snake rip all the carpet off the ramp up the stage when the guy driving it just touched the gas pedal before it hammered for $5 million that year.

You can bet that there really is a reserve!!!  The auction house will bid it up to a number the owner is good with and then see if it sells from that point!

+1 . That way even if it doesn't sell a market price is established (by phantom bidder) for the next time. Smoke and mirrors.

That's the down side of a corrupt entity. If people think, what would I pay for something like that? It would be closer to my original estimate of selling price. You never know what they are thinking but most likely stir up a lot of HOOPLA and set a price for a later sale...

They did that with the red 66 GT350 convertible. Bid it to $8/900k with reserve not met. Then a few months later sell it for $700k (+/-).

Really curious to see what the Bullitt does. Lots of the older generation is dying off.

I am convinced the bidding will be fierce on this car.  We're not in any sort of a recession at the moment and certainly not a depression and you know the whole car world has its eye on this car worldwide...I probably should go down to Fla to see the spectacle unfold.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8JeZBELLMs

Well I saw it live in Traverse City.  Gave it a small bow when no one was looking.  Eerie car as I said before because most if not all the men associated with this car in the movie are gone.  A certain sadness associated with it because McQueen never got to own it.  Flip side of the argument is that he could have bought it after the movie but chose not to.  Unless it wasn't for sale.  I can't imagine WB would not have sold it to him had he made an offer they could not refuse....

Received these in the mail yesterday from Mecum. Pretty cool Bullitt booklet and a Challenger 2 LSR booklet also. The Bullitt booklet is about 25 pages jammed with color photos and the story of the car. My only complaint is that part of the story refers to the scene where McQueen overshoots the right-hand turn and has to back up. Whoever wrote the line about him "slamming it into drive and smoking the tires" is oblivious to the fact that it was a 4-speed, not an automatic, and it only smoked one rear tire with it's open rear end. But that's just me nit-picking. Overall the booklet is very cool. Maybe I'll bring it to Mecum and see if I can get Chad and Sean to autograph it.

I'll be there so I just may have to bid it up to $12 million if no one else steps up to the plate just so I can win this contest. Hey Biggie, what is the prize?

SAY WHAT !

You see, if your girl starts acting up, then you take her friend.

You guys are silly. It's value doesn't exist in three dimension in person. It exists as an image in the film.

You can't recreate that.

Which one are you buying? The stand in for the closeups or the wreck from the ditch?

Are you going to start wearing a turtleneck and a shoulder holster too?

Don't forget all of those Swanson "He Man" frozen dinners.

Buy Dorothy's ruby slippers. They're easier to store.

This could turn out to be one of the biggest urinating contest we have ever seen.

Things to consider:
1) it's on the national historic vehicle registry
2) the most famous car chase filmed
3) driven by Steve McQueen
4) wanted to be purchased by Steve McQueen but was turned down numerous times
5) hidden for decades
6) SOMEONE HAS THE MONEY AND WANTS IT, GOING TO MAKE
   IT RAIN

Throwing something out there, what if you were one of the bidders and someone out bid you on BULLITT.

They who bought it , just bought it , zero attachment just a future investment.....

This may not be the last time it goes up for sale

Oh by the way to answer your other question;

Which one are you buying? The stand in for the closeups or the wreck from the ditch

The one that is being sold is #559 the close up car that is dilapidated in the USA

The wreck from the ditch is #558 being rebuilt in Mexico

No one can ever prove people with lots of disposable cash are smart.

I guess if you put it in a museum you can charge people to see it, then?  ;D

Do you know that Roy Rogers had Trigger stuffed and mounted? Admission was not free. ;)

I just told one of my friends essentially the same, just because you have the funds,  does not mean you have the sense...

Better lucky than good.  Yes I was aware that Roy had Trigger and also Bullet ( not to be confused with Bullitts car) stuffed and displayed them in his and Dale's museum.  Talk about extracting the most profits from Trigger. It's all about the Benjamin's...

Having worked in the classic car auction business for over 25 years, I can tell you that all it takes is 2 bidders that both want the car. Whoever has more nerve and deeper pockets will win the final bid.
So really the sky is the limit. After all, what is a few million dollars to a billionaire.

Just for education and clarification purposes:

First picture, Roy, Trigger and Bullet alive

Second picture,  Trigger and Bullet stuffed

Third picture,  Bullitt the topic of this illustrious conversation

Fourth picture, Dale....

As far as the sequence shirt, rumor has it was sold either to Liberace or some guy up North.

Only one bidder in some cases. The house will shill bid the car up to what they think is a market value . This procedure has been confirmed a number of times by auction representatives of several of the major auctions houses over the years. They claim it is to protect the seller in case there is no money in the house at auction time. The house will bid the car up to the reserve if the car does not sell the last so called bid(house) is there to establish a supposed market value. So one buyer bidding against the house to a point that they let it go at. Supposedly only legal for cars that have a reserve. But most likely it happens sometimes on no reserve auctions too. Don't shoot the messenger.

Agreed, and sounds reasonable to me if only bid up to reserve , no harm no fowl, would not have to be the house that does it, just get a mate to bid it to reserve.
Or a fake phone bidder. As you say , sets a perceived value.

Wayne Carini mentioned that on a car at auction on his TV show saying that there appeared there was no money in the room and the house was bidding the car up to reserve and had the right to do it IIRC. Gary

Mr Gaines, I believe you, lots of silliness going on at these auctions.

There is a reason drink coupons come with every bidder's pass
A couple of years ago I was at Barrett Jackson Las Vegas with a few friends.  Me and one of my buds broke from the group to get our drinks refilled.  Upon returning to our friends one of them had a "winning ticket" poking out of his shirt pocket.  He had just bid and successfully bought a car at BJ.

For all the years we have been going with friends none of us had ever bought a car at BJ so we were all "Yeah baby!!!!...... you da man.......about time somebody man'ed up and bought a car at Barrett Jackson......wooooo hooooo" until we realized what he had bought.

What's funny is that he bought a Ford Fusion stretch Limo.  The damn thing had been stretched by 6 freaking inches.

What's funnier is that he wasn't even drinking and his wife looked somewhat shell shocked.

What's hilarious is that he already owned a Ford Fusion back home in Calgary, Alberta.

And the cherry on top of this entire comedy act is that when I asked him "Is this sort modified car admissible into Canada?", ......he had no idea.  We were rolling on the floor laughing.  Still to this day it is the best Barrett Jackson story I personally have.

Turns out the Limo Company that modified the car was apart of only 2 accredited limo companies who could modify cars and there fore that bitchen' strech limo was indeed admissible into Canada.  Boy did he get lucky.  To this day it proudly resides in his garage next to his other Ford Fusion. :o

;D

1/9. I wouldn't lie to you Bill. At least not intentionally.  :)

Put me down for 3.5M if it is not too late.

David is the winner!

Congrats to the Biggie Auction Estimate winner!

I made it into the Top Three.  Was fun when bidding stalled at $3.1 Mill (my guess) for a little while.

I was starting to pack my bags for Biggie Resorts Int'l in Burnout World.

David wins first prize.
He gets a free Tattoo the next time he comes to visit and I will personally chaperone his car onto the racetrack at WGI the next time I see him there providing it's a Shelby or Mustang etc.

CONGRATULATIONS

Don our sincerest apologies for this auditing error that has occurred.

The good:
Through our connections we have contacted Colonel   (we think army, not sure)Sanders and he has graciously donated this most delicious KFC family pack.

The bad:
Was to be delivered on that same Aloha Airlines flight  by some guy named Rudy...

Does that include air fare for the visit?  I'll bring the mai tai and mac nuts! ;D

I am actually relieved that David won.  He will have to deal with collecting his "reward".  As for my consolation prize, I will be checking the local aviation boneyard for decaying fried chickens nestled in a gold helmet.  A much better prize than the guy who just paid millions for a rusted out Mustang missing original parts that spent decades with chickens in a barn.  Heck, he doesn't even have dozens of automotive magazines around now to write about the event and continue the notoriety and mystique.  Sad.

Now we should have a challenge as to how long the before the Bullit Mustang comes back for another auction.

Mahalo and aloha,

What I want to know was if the buyer received one of the promotional packs worth about 60 bucks they kept announcing the buyers of cars during a specific time frame would receive

Personally, I can hardly wait to see this car out on the road being driven just like they were meant to be. Please tell me that the new owner isn't going to keep it in that ridiculous glass box it was displayed in for the last while. How corny was that!  ::)

Don't tell me it's going to end up in a museum some where never to be driven again except maybe on and off some trailer. (https://emoticons.datahamster.com/flyingpig.gif)

Didn't the greek-who bid 3.75 mil - win? He was only off 10K to what the buyer paid for the car. When bidding I add the commission on as to what I'm paying for a car and the new owner paid 3.74 Mil for it. Gary
