That was back when men had better control of their women. Today is completely out of control. And it is showing. Lowest marriage and birth rates in decades in the US. And Europe I might add. Male-female relationships are supposed to be a cooperative, not a competition. That was how we became the apex predator of this planet. All else is folly.

TVR practiced this advertising medium aggressively, and for a couple of years at the Earls Court automotive show, until other automotive participants complained that TVR was acquiring more than their share of the onlookers, particularly for such a small company.
I say kudos for going the extra mile! :o
And, I got one of those...............well, the TVR anyway; 1976 TVR 3000M, (one of 654 produced between 1972 thru 1978) VROOM! 8)

-
Has anyone seen this whacked out idea in person???
Yes, see my previous post. :)
Turbonique was here in Orlando, Fl., on Kent St. if I remember right, less than two miles from or shop. Witnesses in the area would often remark on the annoying loud screeching sound of these units being tested, sometimes even at late night hours.
As far as "whacked-out", well, it was just a different time in history without as many lawyers, men weren't such sensitive wimps; and it did work, with some limitations, and perhaps a few lethal failures, but then, and not to be insensitive, how does the saying go: "you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs"! :o
I spoke with Mr. Middlebrooks (Jr.?) several decades ago (now deceased), via telephone as he had moved to Florida's west coast, attempting to explore the subject further, unfortunately he was very cautious and seem depressed in speaking of the subject, I feel it probably had proven to be a bad period in his life, and was perhaps still fearful of the ever more prevalent layers, so I just let it pass and we talked of other subjects instead.
Just Google TURBONIQUE, lotts of info, and even some period vidio/film clips.
For us Ford guys there's a really cool '64 Galaxy with the "Drag Axle" well photographed. :)
Scott.

As I recall, the Turbonique was a solid fuel powered item that attached to the rear axle. Problem is, once the solid fuel was lit, the was no shut off valve. I recall the NHRA banned it.
-
One word only .... EXCITEMENT!
As I recall, the Turbonique was a solid fuel powered item that attached to the rear axle. Problem is, once the solid fuel was lit, the was no shut off valve. I recall the NHRA banned it.
-
I remember sitting in the stands of O. C. I. R. Drag strip in the late 60s early 70s and a rocket powered dragster pulled into the staging lanes. Top Fuel dragsters and Funny cars were running high 6s low 7s back then, when the announcer said whats the driver holding up? It was 5 fingers... we all yelled in anticipation of a 5 second run, then it was announced he installed a 5 second PILL for the rocket to run for 5 seconds. Once lit it would not turn off until all fuel was burned off. No brakes , parachutes was going to stop it! It ran as planned, thank god for that driver that had bowling ball CAHONES. I think his name was FEARLESS Fred Goeskey (spelling)
-
As I recall, the Turbonique was a solid fuel powered item that attached to the rear axle. Problem is, once the solid fuel was lit, the was no shut off valve. I recall the NHRA banned it.
Nope!
Liquid Isopropyl Nitrate, marketed as "Thermolene" fuel; this being injected into the combustion chamber from a pressurized container vessel, with a control valve for "ON/OFF" but not throttling. So it was an all or nothing event, but one could wimp-out after initializing if necessary, although as the story has it, one didn't want to attempt a re-firing as potentially excess unburned fuel may have accumulated within the combustion chamber which may explode with a bomb effect; but I think perhaps this was caused by terminating the ignition spark rather than the fuel supply for shut-down? ;)
And yes, it was banned, but whether it was due to the reported fatalities associated, the safety requirement investment concerns for the tracks, the fact that the exhibited performances seemed to eclipse that being provided from piston engines, or perhaps the typical tracks of the period just weren't constructed with what was perceived as adequate shut-down distance for the elevated speeds, or maybe just the human behavior of being weary of something new and different. :-\
And probably not good stuff to play with from the health stand point, and I'm not just referring solely to the flammability consequences. :o
Scott.

Penneys tire guarantee
Back in the '70's I bought a battery from the JC Penny's Auto Center with the "Lifetime" guarantee. Even at the premium cost of $47.99, boy that sure didn't work out for them at all; so something like two decades and like four or five batteries latter, then Firestone who had purchased the JC Penny Auto Centers and in the same building were the relationship started, I informed them that they had also bought the "Lifetime" responsibility to me, finally two more batteries later Firestone said no more, ran me off. I was like the '70's Midias Muffler ad with the old guy and his Model A Ford, saying "I'll be back", but I figured I had probably had gotten my monies worth out of them. ::)
Scott.
-
Love it !
Has happened to us and we have also milked it. Reply, oh so you bought them out, that means all their assets, liabilities and warrantees, how nice.

^^^ How many muscle cars in the '70s had a set of these? A ton of them in SoCal. Stuffed under jacked-up Camaros and Mustangs and just about everything else. Vegas and VWs too.
I never owned a set (I was a BFG Radial T/A guy) but my buddies with them said they were even worse than the T/As for hydroplaning.

I'll bypass a series of obvious jokes about the name of that club, but do need to give props to the guy in the photo.
He correctly deduced that if he moved his right shoulder over that way, and adjusted his left shoulder like this, he'd cop two feels at the same time. And have plausible deniability to go with it.
In a Jeff Spicoli voice: "The dude with the camera told me to sit like that. How would I know where my shoulders were?"
His hands, on the other hand..

Yep, and they surly would paint your car for $29.99, but it also included painting the bright trim, door seals with a little over-spray in the interior, tire sidewalls and hub caps.........if you didn't remove them first! They even paint over-sprayed the glass too, but would take a razor blade and scrape it off so you could drive it off the property! ::)
Nope, "no up-sales" to "paint" your car............but masking was extra! ::)

How much HP does a Paxton Super Charger add to the GT 350?
How much HP would Twin Super Chargers add to the 428 CJ with the 1967 GT 500 Intake?
-
The Manufactures have over the decades made claims of 30+%; but speaking in big round numbers, in reality one would probably realize something more along the line of say..............20% +/-.
The multiple superchargers one might install on the greater cubic inch engine are more for the volume requirement, and not necessarily find that they would actually produce greater manifold pressure, as that over the S.B. with just one supercharger, so the generally the rule of thumb gain remains relatively constant, more or less. ;)
Scott.
-
I would say a lot less than that
But got to say they made their heaters work better by generating all that lost horsepower
-
a big foot made you accelerate much faster

I seriously looked into running twin Paxtons on my car. Cobra automotive had the Paxtons , custom engine plate, and related hardware. To say they were expensive would be an understatement, and the gain was just not worth it. Sure it would have the wow factor but not the go factor, the goal was to run the vintage parts like they might have back in the day!(http://)
