Title: Buyer Beware false description for 67 Shelby wheel on ebay
Post by: Bob Gaines on October 06, 2019, 02:51:24 PM
https://www.ebay.com/itm/123930776755  . A steering wheel exactly like the one on the auction did not come on any year Shelby from the factory let alone the Super Snake or regular production 67 Shelby. I tried to contact the seller to explain the differences in the hub, spokes where they met the rim etc.etc. and got a strange error message " Unfortunately this seller is not able to respond to your question. We suggest reviewing the item again to see if your answer is in the seller's listing.".  I hadn't come across that before. It makes me suspect that the seller is aware of the short comings and doesn't want to hear about them from enthusiasts like me. But then again I just might be becoming too cynical in that respect. ;D

Thanks for the heads up, Bob. This seller has had several "Shelby" steering wheels for sales...the same wheels for years. The seller is...ah...interesting.

Sounds like you were blocked.  Been there twice before  ;D both times for returning something that was not as described.

Is the wheel an over-the-counter wheel?

I got a response. He isn't claiming it is a production 67 Shelby wheel. He is saying that it is the same wheel as in the Supersnake. That justifies the price since he has already sold two original 67 wheels for $6500 each. This one is a bargain since it is not "correct".

I'm about to get blocked, just heard a ping on my phone.

I'm not too worried about it since if anyone is going to lay out $4,200 for it without asking here, deserves all of the rights and privileges that come with it.

I'm about to go continue a nasty discussion with him and anticipate being called some kind of an as s hole. Be right back.

I can only assume he hasn't tried to mount that wheel to a 67 Mustang steering column because he would have a problem.

Save your efforts with them. They don't want to hear any criticism. Apparently they choose to stand on their impeccable 5 star reputation.

None of us here know anything and we are a bunch of infidels. Shelby told him it was correct apparently. They were buds. As a matter of fact, Carroll told him just last week?  ::)

There's a pic of a woman on their profile.

They wanted to know if I was the smart alec bothering them about the picture. I suppose they really wanted to say I was a dumb as s?  That's usually where I say I'm a smart as s working my way up to wise as s.

Well, when it comes down to it, why should any of us here be concerned for the future buyer?

After all, he is going to be highly appreciated and immensely reimbursed for putting an incorrect wheel on his "Supersnake clone" or is that Supersnake counterfeit? No doubt, a legend in his own time, but maybe as "Mama C" once wrote, "but that's not exactly what we had planned?"  ;D

Who are we to deny that infamy?

He has a picture posted with it installed. That is the selling point. It's a different kind of deception.Someone in the past changed out the original wheel for this one.

His market is to someone building a replica of the car as it exists now.

This guy has been selling on eBay for years.  Not sure where he aquired all his inventory.  None of it appears to be OEM.  I guessing the steering wheel in question was one available through the Shelby catalog in '1967-on.  I have one I bought from a nice member on this forum because I like to collect the 'aftermarket Shelby items.  I've never tried to mount it to a stock Mustang, it just sits in a display case.

This guy certainly knows better, but he went to the Pookie school of marketing.  Like Shelby Doug said, whoever pays that, deserves to be taken to a degree.  Like a variation of "Stupid is as stupid does".

I wonder how many other eBay sellers have permanent bans on Bob?

It's an "aftermarket wheel". Let's be frank. The '67 Shelby wheel is also BUT it is the same one used throughout 67 Shelby production.

I believe that the wheel here in question is even made by the same manufacturer but it's a different model. The originals tend to be a little fragile and more then a few were damaged and needed replacement.

The Supersnake was just a used car with a unique history that few carred about for MANY years. It's not surprising that there were parts that needed to be replaced.

That wheel is also used on a couple of Lamborghinis and Brit boutique cars of the era as well. I don't think any manufacturer back then that used them really cared that the wheel maker had variations in the same model? It's only now with a large push to historical accuracy (Concourse) that anyone would even question something like this.

The seller actually acknowledges the lack of correctness for a regular 67 Shelby and is just offering it to a Supersnake counterfeiter at a substantially discounted rate.

It takes two parties to constitute a swindle. A seller and buyer. Both somewhat dishonest. Who cares? Old news.

Bob you super sleuth!!!  The interior shot is photo shopped! Notice there is a shadow of the steering wheel but NOT the shift lever!!! The shadow it too big as well. Besides that the wheel is not a '67 style as Bob mentioned initially.
Maybe he would like to buy the "real " one I have which needs the original wood repaired/replaced.

The picture of the interior of the Super Snake GT500 in August 67 Drag Strip magazine shows a typical 67 Shelby steering wheel . I don't remember another different one in the car all of the years it showed at the Tulsa Show or when subsequent owners showed the car.
