Title: Ford radio
Post by: deathsled on January 06, 2020, 02:37:46 PM
Dear All:
I recently learned that a good number of Hertz cars received the Philco radio. Mine has a FORD radio. Did I get the short end of the stick? Or in this case, the short end of the antenna?

Best,

Richard E.

It will say F O R D on the dial but it was made by Philco.  Part number on the case should read 6TPZ.

That's what it says on the dial of mine. I haven't pulled said radio to explore further details. A few on this site mentioned and one showed an ancient decal on their radio top or side with printed matter on it. I am searching my computer files to see if I can find the video of when the radio was out and being worked on.

It use to be urban legend that to ID a ex-rental GT350H car it had have a DELUXE radio.  We know that is no longer true, but there must be some basis for the guidance back in the day.  I belive the DELUXE radio was made by AUTOMATIC.

Here is one:

I expect the radios used were "all of  them".  What ever was available, accepted no AM/FM radios.

Makes sense that a rental company would not be willing to pay for extra frills. Reminds me once again of Indiana Jones..."that isn't the cup of a carpenter."  Things get distorted with time. Time can either be your enemy or it can be your friend. Depending..

They had only AM radios, today they get all kinds of staticky AM stations through that big single speaker. I suggest turn down the radio and listen to the sound of a solid lifter 289 at full throttle, much better

I agree, Steve.

I've owned my KR since 1982 and have only had the radio on a couple of times, back in the day when there was still something decent on AM.

Agreed that the engine and exhaust sound (plus all the requisite squeaks and rattles) sound better than anything on the radio.

#477 is equipped the same way. Well the radio is on the shelf at this point like the heater and rear seat LOL. Proper deletes occupy their spaces now.

If that's not the right radio then it's probably still in the garage. Let me know if your's is not right and I'll dig through the pile and see if I have the original.

#550 has AM radio, what it was built with. Owned since '67 when Ford sold it. 4 speed, and Mico. Mico isn't the original one as part of pressure plate went thru the original when clutch exploded. Ron

I have no reason to think it's not the original radio.  Looks old and appropriate.
