SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.  Jan. 16, 2020 – This morning Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson, gave media and the public its first look at his newly restored 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 EXP prototype known as "Little Red". Once believed destroyed and lost forever, Little Red was discovered on March 3, 2018, in rural North Texas by a team led by Jackson and classic car restoration specialist, Jason Billups. This Shelby prototype has been one of the most sought-after and elusive vehicles in postwar history.

The historic unveil took place this morning during the 49th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale. Among other guests, Jackson was joined by Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson; Jim Owens, Ford Mustang Brand Manager; and Aaron Shelby, grandson of Carroll Shelby.  Other representatives from Ford Motor Company, Shelby American and Shell Pennzoil were also in attendance.

This morning's unveil also featured Jackson's 1968 Shelby GT500 prototype known as the "Green Hornet". Today was the first time in history both experimental Shelby GT500 Mustangs have been seen together.

Little Red and Green Hornet were also joined by a one-of-one Candy Apple Green and a Rapid Red 2020 Shelby GT500, both owned by Jackson. The 2020 Mustangs are the modern day "descendants" of the two experimental 1960s Shelbys. An independent rear suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and electronic fuel injection connect Green Hornet to the 2020 models, while the new supercharger is reminiscent of what's under the hood of Little Red. The 2020 Green Hornet car was the first model (VIN 001) to roll off the line at Flat Rock Assembly Plant last fall.

Following the presentation, the four Shelby Mustangs were started in unison by Craig Jackson in Little Red, Steve Davis in Green Hornet, Jim Owens in the Rapid Red 2020 GT500 and Aaron Shelby in the Candy Apple Green 2020 GT500. The four vehicles represented over 2,600 horsepower.

I have never been a super big fan of notchback coupes, but the '67 fiberglas (and vinyl top)  really helps IMO.

Hello Pete,

The 2 coupes do look good together.  I view them as having a parent (Little Red) and offspring (Green Hornet) relationship.   Now on the other hand, seeing the three red "sister cars" (0100, 0131, and 0139) together and thinking about the "what if" they represent was far more impressive, in my opinion.

Hello Pete,

I agree, the technology on the Green Hornet (EFI, IRS, and 4-wheel discs) makes it more impressive than the twin Paxtons on Little Red.  "Fat Freddy's" (as some employees referred to him) play toy (Green Hornet) is pretty cool.

I'm really liking the chrome front turn signal housings. That would have looked good on the 68's with their Chrome rear marker light housings.

I inquired a few times on here as well as in person yesterday at their display booth regarding the performance aspects of both cars. No one really seems to care or make the performance aspect of these cars a priority or really understand anything about them. The hoods were closed, they looked stunning in their static display but nothing about their back grounds, both young and old display people couldn't answer the most basic questions probably more security then anything, hired by the BJ crew. Prices seemed to be on an upswing, people were digging the positive vibe of the show. Good times :)

Personally, I think the performance of the cars is secondary to their historical significance.

The Green Hornet has a very well built 428 Cobra Jet engine. The Conelec EFI raised the horsepower, torque and fuel mileage.

In conversations Jason said with a smile that that Craig runs the snot out of the green hornet . Craig admitted yesterday he has already broken 3 rear ends in it. Lil Red has just got finished and so the owner hasn't put it through its passes. It has much more power the the Hornet so it should be interesting to hear about.

Thanks Pete for the heads up on the vehicles, I know you were involved in bringing them back from the dead and you have vested interest in the cars. I went back to the display multiple times to see if anything changed with the people or how the cars were presented and it didn't change. The hoards of people that floated by the display didn't really know or care about the vintage cars, what they were looking at were the newer cars internal workings and what a new 7 speed TREMEC transmission looks like internally or what the bottom of a new SHELBY GT mustang looks like. Jason deserves props for truly creating some masterpieces they were stunning in appearance. I lingered around to here what the people were saying about the stunning GREEN and RED coupes and the answer was similar, Nice looking FAKE SHELBYS :-[ That was a downer.

I would suggest he stay out of the nitrous.

I guess this would be one of the reasons an IRS wasn't offered until 3 decades later.

I think we are ALL missing something, The things that make the most ICONIC engineering cars special, were NOT outlined or displayed to show what makes them special. If you own the most powerful car of its time or the most advanced suspension of its time wouldn't you want to show that? This isn't little league, a small fortune was probably spent on them. Show their special traits that's what makes them what they are. The hoods were down the rear end could not be seen so I and many were disappointed we could not see these items up close and personal. The show was first class though, had a great time, if you have never been get here! ;)

OK, love the color.  So, what is it.  Ferrari red or is that rangoon red?  Or ???

The hard part has been making the metal underlined deck and hood (as the early built 67 is known to have).  And if the real one doesn't have it, too late now.

Everyone please stay tuned.  Full blown documentary productions of both Little Red and Green Hornet are being edited for release.  Those are where we all will learn the details of the discovery, research and restoration of each; the research continues.

Mr. Jackson had to run his business, as well as the Thursday unveil.  Hopefully, the documentaries will fill in some blanks for us, plus feed the intrigue.
