Title: Proposed spring SAAC Carolinas event: Aviation Museum, Hickory, NC
Post by: BGlover67 on February 09, 2020, 01:03:01 PM
I recently received this suggestion from one of our members Bill B.  It's the Aviation Museum in Hickory, NC that he volunteers at.

https://www.museumofaviation.org/

http://www.hickoryaviationmuseum.org/

(corrected the link)

Bill says he can get our cars onto the tarmac to take pics with the airplanes.  We can try to recreate the famous magazine cover I attached.
There is a cafĂ© at the airport that serves great food and we can reserve a room for us for lunch, or there are picnic tables outside.  The Museum is free of charge and Bill has offered to give a guided tour of the aircraft including the the museum's most popular F-14 Tomcat, and the P-3 Orion, which Bill actually flew!

For those who want to trailer their cars, there is ample room in the airport parking lot for trailers.

I'll throw out a tentative date of Saturday, April 4th, but it can be any other date potentially, except March 28th.  Please comment here, or PM me to discuss.  I'll be suggesting some other ideas for another event soon, but this sounds like a nice way to kick off the 2020 spring season.

I don't believe so Keith.  Can you tell from the website?

Actually, I think this is the one at Robins AFB. The museum is just a mile or two south of the base.

I've never been there, but I'd sure like to visit some day.

OK, good to know!

200212: Brian, you were correct after all. The Hickory Aviation Museum is close to Robins AFB only if you think a 325 mile drive is "close".

I had used the original (not the subsequently corrected) website link to find the location.

The Museum is Hickory Aviation Museum, in Hickory NC.  We host plenty of car clubs as it's every easy access to our aircraft display, enter under the wing of the P-3C Orion, between engines 1 and 2 and onto the tarmac.  We'll also have our newly acquired Bell USMC SuperCobra AH-1W Gunship on display in a couple of weeks, so there is plenty of aircraft to photograph with your cars.  We also have a complete F-14 cockpit that everyone can sit in and see what it was like inside a Tomcat.  Unfortunately, our F-4 Phantom is in our restoration area and will be unavailable.   Once we come up with a date, I'd like to publicize a little so visitors can come out and enjoy the planes and our great cars.  Our museum is a registered 501C non profit and there never is an admission charge, we rely on donations and corporate assistance.  Sorry for confusion on museum webpage link, I had a typo when I originally sent it to BG.  www.hickoryaviationmuseum.org, and we are on all the social media platforms as well. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Brian,
Sounds like a great idea and one I'd like to attend.
Unfortunately, Saturday April 4th is the same date as the Spring Charlotte Autofair at Charlotte Motor Speedway - April 2-5, 2020.
Not sure who all attends it, but it's a pretty big deal. I'm also an AACA member and will be working the event and will also have a car entered in the AACA Spring Nationals Judged car show going on out in front.

If another date is selected, I will try and make it.

Thanks!
