Title: 6S289 - The Family Car - 50+ Years
Post by: 6S289 on March 04, 2018, 11:57:45 PM
This story begins with a young lady. This young lady was looking for that special car. After some searching, a unique opportunity, with a special car, presented itself. After contacting the owner of this car, a family test drive was arraigned, and the car was purchased.

The year was 1967.

The car is 6S289.

The young lady is my mom.

Mom always loved 6S289, her 1966 GT350, even during those 28 years that it sat idle in her garage.

In 2005, it was my pleasure, after those 28 years of being dormant, to work towards bringing 6S289 back to its former glory. 6S289 was back on the road again in 2007 and mom was so excited to see this after now 30 years. Mom attended car shows and loved to share her experiences of 6S289 with those who would stop by to see her special car.

Mom was able to enjoy these times for just a few short years, because sadly, we lost mom recently.

I want to remember and honor mom and one of the things she loved and really enjoyed.
These photos are early photos of mom with 6S289 - mom's special car.

-Photo 3 - 1968 - Me, Mom and brother with 6S289 on a trip to Los Angeles

Great story & pictures!

Have you ever had your 6S289 featured in "The Shelby American"? If not, you need to write up that story with a little more detail and submit it to Rick Kopec. I feel certain he would publish it. And there are a lot of SAAC members who don't read the forum, so you'd be sharing with a wider audience. Just a suggestion.

I found this interesting in the article.

"Another non-standard item on 6S289 is the Toploader transmission. Russ and my dad confirmed that they had never had the transmission changed. Russ added that he now knows what Shelby meant when said that he had installed a "special shifter" in this car."

Being that this was tracked back to the original owner, it seems like some non-standard parts worked their way into standard production at SA.  I have heard that some owners had cars that received top loaders originally from Shelby but I dismissed it as a dealer change, apparently not.  I guess SA ran out of aluminum T10's or had issues with them and they let the top loaders go through.

To make the transmission story on 289 more interesting, the other Autoweek GT350, 290, had a T-10.

Thanks everybody for the kind words about mom and 6S289.
To answer one question, yes-we still have 6S289.

By the way, in case you are interested, I just added photos and a link to the video of the women's clothing line photo shoot that 6S289 was in. They are in the "In Media" tab on the 66GT350.com site.

I attached one photo from the photo shoot below.

This photo of 6S289 was taken soon after the restoration was completed - in early 2007.

The photo includes the following people:

- Jeff (1st from left) and Chris (3rd from left) - the main restorers of 6S289
- Current owners family (5th through 7th from left)
- Russ and Marlene Goebel (8th and 9th from left) - original owners of 6S289
- Current owners Mom (10th from left) - 2nd owner of 6S289
- Current owner - me - (11th from left - or 1st from right...) - 2A owner of 6S289

Oh - you may have noticed that the photo is signed by a few familiar people. I took this photo to a few events and had it signed. It makes for a nice memento.

COMPETITION PRESS and AUTO WEEK (later AUTOWEEK) published an article in its December 26, 1964 issue about the new Shelby "Mustang GT, powered by Cobra".  As we all know, this new car from Shelby way back then, is what we now know as the GT350. The article, by Ed Leslie, gave readers an early glimpse into the beautiful car we all enjoy.

The Co-Publishers of CP&AW at the time of the article were Bill Finefrock and Russ Goebel. They must have kept a close eye on this new creation from Shelby, and thought it was pretty amazing, as CP&AW purchased two 1966 GT350's directly from Shelby 10 months later. GT350 cars VIN 6S289 and 6S290 were delivered to CP&AW's San Francisco office via Shelby's trailer on November 5, 1965.

Russ drove 6S289 and Bill drove 6S290.

More than 50 years ago, in August, 1967, my parents (mom) purchased 6S289 from CP&AW.

Nearly 53 years after the Mustang GT article was published, in September 2017, the same publication, AUTOWEEK (formally Completion Press and AutoWeek), published an article about 6S289, their former GT350.

In 2016, Russ and his wife joined me (and 6S289) at the Cobra Experience (SAAC-43 Friday Night Social location) Cobra Day car show. They hadn't seen 6S289 since the photo shoot (photo in earlier post) taken in 2007 – nine years earlier.

To make the continuing story even sweeter, Russ and I communicate quite regularly and my wife and I plan to spend our 30th Anniversary with Russ and his wife at their Inn later this year.

Here is a photo of 6S289 in 1968 with the current owner (me - age eight) on the left and my brother helping dad get 6S289 ready for our first trip to Disneyland. The original Cragar wheel seen in the photo is still on 6S289 today (all four as well as the fifth wheel in the trunk).
I like this photo as it reminds me of when I had hair...

P.S. I have been trying to attach photos directly from my computer (still not working) , so this is the first attempt at adding a photo via the Gallery....

Are you going to SAAC-43?

On Friday, August 3rd, the day I plan to take 6S289 to Sears Point for SAAC-43, will mark exactly 51 years of 6S289 being in the family.

See the Owner Transfer Certificate for 6S289 from Competition Press to my family's credit union - dated 8/3/67.
Yes - I have the original paper

In looking ahead to SAAC-43 at Sears Point (I know, Sonoma Raceway), I have attached photos of 6S289 at the track.

Photo 1: December 1968 - My Dad exhibition racing 6S289 during the weekend of the first race at Sears Point. Dad was a member of the SCCA and the RDC. I asked Dad, why was that Corvette ahead of you. He said he wasn't ahead of me; I was getting ready to lap him...

Photo 2: August 2007 - Me taking 6S289 back on the track soon after the restoration. Same car, same track, same track location - 39 years after Dad's photo...

See you at SAAC-43 - 6S289 will be there - just 4 months shy of 50 years after dad's photo.

Mark, I own 281, and it is an automatic transmission car as so many of the first hundred post carry over units seem to have been. Curious, was 289 also originally an automatic transmission vehicle?
Thanks, Karl

Kari,

My records indicate: 281-284 as automatic, 285 is possibly 4 speed, 286-287 as automatic, 288 is possibly 4 speed and 289-290 as 4 speed.

Hi Karl and Dennis,

6S289 was delivered with a 4-speed, as seen in the the Vehicle Order form for 6S289 below, which did not have the automatic transmission box checked.

Now the interesting note - 6S289 was delivered with a Ford Toploader instead of the typical Borg-Warner T10.

The Toploader was installed special for the original owner, Russ Goebel, a close friend of Carroll Shelby and the publisher of Competition Press & AutoWeek back in November '65.

I have signed documentation regarding the transmission and the other unique items installed (Blaupunkt radios and electric antenna) on 6S289 prior to delivery to Russ in November '65.

Thanks, Mark

I am current owner of 285.  My understanding is that my car was originally an automatic as the first few non-carryover cars were Hertz prototypes for automatics.  Car currently has to-loader 4 speed.  Burgy owned my car in the 1970's and is the source of my information

I had a good time at the Sears Point SAAC-43 event with 6S289.

One of things on my to do list was to drive on the track and take a photo from inside 6S289 at the location dad took a photo 50 years prior in 6S289. Check this item off the list...

My wife and I celebrated our 30th Anniversary last week in British Columbia with these two dear friends - the original owners of 6S289. They took delivery of 6S289 on November 5, 1965 from their good friend, Carroll Shelby.
We heard great stories of their adventures with Carroll, auto racing and of course, 6S289.
My parents bought 6S289 from them in August, 1967.

After 28 years of sitting completely idle in mom's garage, 6S289 began its latest phase of "life" in 2005. That is when my then 12-year old son and I attended SAAC-30 at Fontana. 6S289 was still in mom's garage when the first photo below of myself, Carroll Shelby and my son was shot. It was a month after this photo was taken, that we begun the restoration of 6S289.

Now in 2018, 13 years later, my now married son (in the second photo below) is 25 years old. This means I can now add him to the insurance for 6S289. If that wasn't (gulp) scary enough, I will be adding my married 27 year old daughter to the insurance as well.

Just a little prepping for the next generation with 6S289 - though Lord willing I will keep going, showing and enjoying 6S289 for quite a while.

To add to the Sears Point photos - I found the two photos below, which are more photos of Dad racing 6S289 in December 1968 at Sears Point. I asked Dad why is there a truck on the track. He doesn't remember exactly why it was there. I then asked, why is the truck in front of you - he said he lapped it soon after the photos was taken.

The photo reminded both of us of the scene in the original Italian Job movie where the Mini-Coopers lined up behind a truck and drove into the truck to get away from the police. Good thing Dad did not attempt that stunt.

The second photo shows Dad gaining on the Corvette - soon to pass.

This week marks the 50th anniversary of my dad exhibition racing 6S289 at Sears Point. Talking with dad today, he told me that it was the first race weekend, which was December 1, 1968 - an SCCA Enduro event. He was invited to participate in the race by the RDC (Racing Drivers Club), which he was a member. He was also an SCCA member. In addition, he said that part of the day, 6S289 was parked next its sister car, 6S290. There may be more evidence forthcoming about this... These two GT350s were the two "stablemates" owned by Competition Press & AutoWeek. Both cars were purchased from CP&A about 18 months earlier. This day at Sears Point would have been the last time these two cars would have been together - 50 years ago.

Photo of that day just one more time below.

Please allow me to reminisce a bit.
A few days ago, I was going through the collection of the 6S289 things mom gave me when we begun the restoration of 6S289 years ago, and I came upon mom's well-worn keys for 6S289. They reminded me of such times like when mom would pick me up from school in 6S289, in which many of my friends would want a ride home...or the grocery runs to Safeway...or the times mom would get a little heavy on the accelerator and going through the gears while saying " I'll race any man out there..." Ah, great memories.
Mom and my brother are with the Lord now, but I have the fond memories and 6S289 to enjoy and remember...
Photo of mom's keys for, and on 6S289 below.

A familiar scene in our garage in the sixties. Whether it was dad's TR4 race car, our '55 140 Jaguar, or as in this case, 6S289. This photo of 6S289 is probably 1969 (50 years ago). I like the added element of dad's race helmet sitting on the roof of the family car.
Good thing dad knew how to put everything back, as 6S289 still has these original components installed.

Dad, please remember to use the mat on the fender.....

The neighbors loved it (not really) when dad would perform a test drive in the neighborhood after doing his latest adjustments to one of the cars.

Great memories.
I am glad memories are still being made with 6S289 today.

just an overall great story. My mom grew up in the 50s and 60s and always loved muscle cars. In fact, she bought a Dodge 1970 440 6-pack conv in the 90s because she always wanted one. It had to be auto as mom didn't really know how to drive stick. We no longer have the car, but my mom is still into fast cars. The moral of the story is, when you pull up to a light and you see an old lady in a fast car.... Don't underestimate how fast she might hit the gas when the light turns.

Previously (last year), I shared in this post about 6S289 being raced by my dad at Sears Point in December 1968 and then me taking 6S289 on the Sears Point track (same spot) last year - 50 years later. Well, last years drive was actually 4 months shy of 50 years since dad's race. So I thought it best to take 6S289 back out to Sears Point and snap the truly 50 year photo at the same spot as dad's photo. Thankfully, the NorCal Shelby Mini-Nats two weeks ago provided the opportunity to do just that.

So here you go....
Left - Dads race in 6S289 at Sears Point - December 1968
Right - My parade lap in 6S289 at Sears Point August 2019.....a full 50 years plus between photos.

Thanks dad for taking the original photo.

If you would allow me to say...

It was an honor to "represent", if you will, the Shelby brand recently. 6S289 was 1 of 17 of the 2019 Muscle Car of the Year Finalist for the Good Guys organization from their car shows across the nation. 6S289 was not awarded the Muscle Car of the Year but we feel top 17 wasn't too bad.

The photo below is the award given to 6S289. I wanted to honor 6S289's heritage, so I placed my mom's well-worn keys for 6S289 on the left and the Comp Press & AutoWeek's key chains my parents received when they purchased 6S289 in August 1967 - over 52 years ago - on the right.

It's that time of year to take 6S289 out on the wet roads and enjoy drifting around in the mud. So much fun.

Just kidding...this is 6S289 with the iconic G.T.350 badge covered with mud from probably the 1967-68 winter timeframe.
Dad / Mom - what were you thinking?

6S289 now stays nice and dry. No more mud runs.
That Cragar (along with the other four original wheels) stay nice and clean as well.

I feel the same way uncovering/discovering passed history on my car. 1967 #861.  Previously very little was known, but now pics and info back to 1968 with all three owners alive and contacted.

Well, celebrating another year - a birthday in the climate of shelter-in-place. But I received a great gift from my family - the very cool, authentic re-creation 1965 Shelby American Team Jacket - as seen below with 6S289.
Now, I better get 6S289 put away before the Governor finds out.

I am not sure what those tires are though I remember after this time, we had Goodyear Polyglass most of the time.

Very neat thread and stories, thanks for posting  8)

Are those gold line (stripe) tires ? B.F. Goodrich had some,  and I think ? some other manufacturers. The image is

of reproductions made now. I remember them on mid '60s Corvettes back in the day.

There were blue streaks made and installed on Shelby's and Barracuda S's. Barracuda's got the blue side walls - in the thin depression molded in the side wall where ones used on Shelby's were just black like the rest of the side wall.

There were other versions including one with a thin white sidewall stripe and a wider green stripe used on other cars - possibly Corvettes during the same time frame

Father's Day was a great day to take 6S289 out for a drive. It is always enjoyable. Especially when the roads are fairly empty.

53 Years. Yesterday marks 53 years since my parents bought 6S289. The (2) Competition Press & AutoWeek key chains in the photo below were given to my parents when they bought 6S289 back in August 1967.
The fun with 6S289 keeps on going.

Oh - I was going to post this yesterday but it was overshadowed by a more important event...the birth of my first grandchild. YES!

We had a nice vinyl banner made that shows the high-level timeline for 6S289. We had an extra banner made for Russ (Competition Press & AutoWeek President/Publisher at the time), the original owner of 6S289. He really likes it and has it hanging in his office.

I created a (amateur) video of 6S289 for the Hot Wheels Legends Tour. The video includes walk-arounds and some detail close-ups of 6S289. The link below is for the longer (8 minutes) version of the video.
We are a few weeks away (November 5th) from the 55th anniversary of 6S289 being delivered to its original owner Comp Press & AutoWeek, where it was the daily driver for my good friend, Russ Goebel.

Hope you enjoy the video of 6S289...

Thanks. It was great to be able to provide one of these banners to the original owner, who we bought 6S289 from over 53 years ago. I got the idea after picking up these banners and working with the person who made them to make a custom one for 6S289.

I picked up my Christmas gift this past weekend. It is the European Ford Team Blue jacket, to go with the 1965 Shelby Team Wimbledon White jacket, seen in an earlier post. They are both authentic re-creations from RDLA / OVC. Thanks to Jim Marietta and OVC. I dig these jackets...

Well, it has been over a year since I posted here. We have had 6S289 over 53 years now and we still love our family GT350. In one of my last posts, I mentioned that we just had our first grandchild. He is now just over 19 months old and he loves cars. Guess which car he gets the most excited to see?
One of the photos below shows our family's 2nd (me), 3rd (my son) and now 4th (my grandson) generation with 6S289.
When we open 6S289's door, he climbs right in, grabs the steering wheel and is ready to go through the gears. We may have to help him with the clutch though.
The family tradition continues with 6S289.

Like you I have our first grandchild, didn't think I'd have to be 70 to get one. We let her sit in the car while back but she is a "daddy's girl" and didn't like it because daddy was not sitting next to her. My kids call my car the 4th child and say it's dads favorite. Hopefully now that the granddaughter is getting older she will like the car more.
Beautiful pictures of a memory that will last lifetime
