Title: Your opinion of best apocalyptic movie.
Post by: trotrof1 on March 26, 2020, 10:12:09 AM
Four come to mind, Omega Man(1971), Andromeda Strain(1971), Contagion(2011), I Am Legend(2007). Personally I Like Heston piloting Fords around LA and smokin mutants with automatic weapons. I think there should be a academy awards category for mutants on fire. Your thoughts.

"On the Beach" - No zombies, just a great sense of sadness, hopelessness and a frustration reminiscent of where we could wind up? I certainly hope that it isn't greatly prophetic. It is definitely a very "heavy subject".

I, like the lone surviving MD in the hospital nursery, "will stay to the end".

I guess there were also a bunch of Twilight Zone episodes that dealt with the end of the world.
Also the Postman. Great cameo with Tom Petty. RIP

Postman would probably be the bestI have watched. However, Red Dawn may be an advised course of study.

Maybe not apocalyptic in the traditional sense, but I have a special affinity to Falling Down (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106856/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_37). My wife will just roll her eyes and walk out of the room if I happen to come across it while channel surfing.

The first "Planet of the Apes".   I like the scene where Charles Heston sees the Statue of Liberty washing to shore.   He gets off the horse and exclaims "Oh my God. I'm back. I am home all the time. They finally really did it. You maniacs!  You blew it up.  Dam you.   God dam you all to hell."  Classic movie.

Stay well.

"Best" is a tough call to classify it as. I'd say "way to effin realistic". It's VERY disturbing and if it doesn't move you, best check for a pulse, you may be dead?

Watch it, if you dare. It'll set you strait.

Soylent Green... I had forgotten about that one. I would venture to guess It's because it was released in 1973 and I was eight.  There is actually a product out for human consumption called Soylent.  We already know soybeans aren't good for the human digestive system.
However, knowing the background and the movie I think I'll pass.  :o

In the Omega Man flick when the black robed creeps jacked up Chucks mustang paint job with fire, it was game on after that. Imagine if you were driving home and that happened to your newly delivered Ford GT Heritage. Things could get ugly and right quick.

True, but that is fantasy. I've been cautioned officially here about the use of firearms to protect my vehicles from theft. Seems that the crooks have more rights then I do?

God forbid, they aren't registered? I could go to jail for 20 years if I used an unregistered hand gun.

The local PD wants to know how I can prove that someone sitting in the drivers seat with the engine running in my driveway is stealing my car? You know, I don't know how to answer that? :o

Anyone see the movie "The Road". Very scary portrayal
And of the Kevin Costner Apocalyptic Trilogy "Waterworld" "The Postman" and his minor part in the movie "Testament" , it's really a good one, better than "Day After"
Another nuclear holocaust movie " Special Bulletin" made for TV, has an unbelievable ending

I was actually watching Dr.Strangelove or is it Strangeglove, last night. I needed the senseless frivolity.

Sellers definitely had that ability to turn something so serious into a round of ridiculous non-sense.

Cheers Mr.Peter. ;)

I'll also agree that riding along a beach and finding the torch of the "Statue of Liberty" sticking out of the sand is a very troubling thought as well. Actually Sunshine was pretty hot and even better, she didn't talk?

I grew up seeing the real statue every day. One day it just hit me as if I just saw it for the first time. It's very emotional when that happens. Difficult to hide your tears from the children. They don't understand.

No, this masterpiece of a film depicting mans inhumanity to man or in this case... apocalypticism recieved several academy awards.  Thus catapulting a sequel, yes a sequel of this phenomenal jandra "scream Blacula scream"  aka Blacula # 2.

This second film also worn several major awards in the 70s. The main actor also received the noble peace prize for being the noblest actor in 1972.

If you haven't seen either we highly recommend you rent, no donr rent, purchase (yes its that good!) both so you can watch numerous times and add them to your visual collection to impress your friends. Betcha none have these two cultural apocalyptic films in their homes!

Since dropping DirecTV I've been searching for streaming content that interests me. There's so much stuff out there that the satellite was keeping me from! Currently watching the 4 seasons of the original Twilight Zone on Netflix (seasons 1,2 3 & 5). I've always been a big fan and almost always would tune in when a Twilight Zone marathon was running. But I've seen several recently that I either don't remember or never saw in the first place. "Time Enough At Last" is a definite classic. Good call NC TRACKRAT!

My favorite is 'King Nine Will Not Return' It's loosely based on the story of Lady Be Good that disappeared in 1943 and was found all but intact in the Libyan desert in 1958. The story is fascinating and tragic. I own several books and a relic that was recovered from the site.
Here is a brief. If you find it interesting and want to learn more there are several videos on Youtube and at least three books on the subject.
The crew was never honored, So I had a B-3 Bomber jacket painted to honor the crew.

Now that sounds like stuff I get from the under 35 crowd. (Germany and Peal Harbor). Few of them know where or when anything happened or why.  Then the usual secondary comments that the conflict wasn't necessary.  They are so blatantly naieve and ignorant. It's disgusting.
