I think the first April Fools cover was the Thurman Munsen (?) Cobra also on one of the Marque's I think it was a color cover.
Pretty sure that was Thurman Loomis.  Thurman Munsen was a catcher for the NY Yankees who was killed in an airplane that crashed on landing.

Thanks for clarifying that. I was just about to google Thurman Munsen Cobra. Johnny Bench was my fav though.

I know this has probably been asked many times, but this is the first '65 GT350 I have ever had so wanted to check. I see on the title of the car I am buying has only the Shelby serial number, no Ford VIN. I am assuming my state, New Mexico, will transfer the title using that number on it and the registration without any problems or questions about a Ford VIN. I am hoping all states recognize the Shelby serial number and not a Ford VIN, correct?
Unfortunately all states are not the same and it is more a bureaucratic issue meaning it depends on the state and also the person in the state. Technically Shelby and the Shelby VIN is the MFG of record and all states should recognize that. Some times you may have to argue the point with supporting documentation to get the correct way. If you are lucky you will not. In the end it really doesn't matter if you can't win the argument because there was only one Ford VIN that went with one specific Shelby VIN and vice versa.  On the tax side a 65 Shelby VIN can be easily flagged in the system for its high 6 figure value in those states that collect personal property tax every year base on the cars value. That is what happens in my home state of MO on a evolving basis for classic cars that are identifiable as high value. A Ford VIN identifies a old Mustang not worth enough to bother.

that's interesting that MO will flag certain vins. In Ca (at least 10 years ago) there was absolutely nothing like that.  You could register any car with Vin number SFM5S*** or FZZ....... (Ferrari) and nothing will trigger any alerts. I was told by multiple sources with much DMV knowledge that absolutely no one looks at VIN #s when sales are reported (private party) and their is no disclosed selling price by the seller.

Wanted to Buy / Re: Serial number tag

How about removing the original.  Put it in a safety deposit box and then put a repo tag on the car.

I did not do this with mine but I completely understand why someone would do the above.

Wish it was down on G50 911s or Ducati super sports

It is true a Chevy will not have the engine designation in the VIN, but there is an additional stamp on the engine pad that shows the plant, assembly date, and code for the engine, so it is not that hard to tell an original engine to a car and that is also judged in NCRS, Bloomington, MCACN, etc.   It is interesting you believe   that an original block in a car like this is not worth much more than a replacement of the proper type/date/etc.  In that case, no one should worry about this engine being original anyway, just ignore that and look at the whole car.

Mike, don't people fake the other stamps and casting dates along with the engine pads?  Years ago I was an NCRS member and I remember reading that even if NCRS did judge (say an LT-1, or whatever) to be Top Flight they did not say with any certainty that the car was in fact what it was represented to be. I understand the point in doing this but have you ever seen a Vette with a high dollar pass Top Flight judging and not be what it was represented to be?

Chevy sure would've saved everyone a lot of hassle if they would have put the engine codes in the vin prior to 72.

1966 Shelby GT350/GT350H / Re: Numbers on seat
November 29, 2023, 10:39:00 AM
I wonder why would that be a concern since every 66 (1 or 2 maybe non black) had black seats?  Are the numbers the SFM numbers?  Can't make it out on my phone.

I would tend to believe that it must have had some sort of issue(s).  Surely their must have been more than a few Shelby guys in the room who would have bought it at a higher price had all been good.

PBF 777,
The heart of the topic ?

I believe the intended value in the posting counts feature is that this perhaps provides some guidance to the readers as to the possible validity of the comments being made, as otherwise with proper regulation the disfavored poster would shall we say..........have been tarred & feathered, and run out of town!   ::)
Scott.

Great statement in this old dogs opinion.
Perhaps screen the un-scrupulous type differently, many that have posted seem to have the same feeling ?
Deathsled, as always a great thought out post, thank you for including me in your list, I am humbled by the knowledge of many on your list !

John from Utah, as big Jim Cowles aka'd as in the late 80's.

Speaking as an old dog who didn't make the list, I wonder if I am even relevant any more? I suspect not. I am not fitting anyone else's agenda and there are agendas here apparently.
I added you to the list, shelbydoug.  I always enjoy your philosophical and level headed approach to all topics plus your automotive knowledge for sure.  Sorry I missed you. I was a tad heated when I wrote that treatise which in the end means nothing because I am but one pathetic squeaky voice in this big world and I have thus far done nothing great or notable that would make me memorable in life or after death.  Being a lawyer does not impress me in the least.  It's a living sometimes full of vitriol is all I can say.  Being a noted author with something to say or a composer is a far greater aspiration.  I won't be remembered but for five minutes after I die, likely by the graveyard attendants before they shovel that last bit of earth and go to lunch.  That said, my SAAC list is inconsequential in the greater sense of things from someone who is also inconsequential, but all of you mean a lot to me and I apologize for missing one or more of you.  Now, I will endeavor to get off of this site and refrain from "irrelevant" posts as the benefit of my absence.

It's ok that I didn't make the cut for list...but Even over DEAD PEOPLE! That's a new low for me.

These days I agree with others that I don't even like what I think, mostly don't even care what I think and just accept my daily reviews. Usually from my wife of how disappointing I am.

That's all ok. I just am numb to it now. I keep things real. What really matters is that I didn't make the JV baseball team when I was 14 but got personally invited to a private tryout by Walter O'Malley, then owner of the Dodgers. SO THERE! Another LA connection that went bust. It was 1968 and had my Cobra already picked out.

Seriously though, what I advise "youngins" these days, which I do think is somewhat pertinent to this discussion in my own twisted way is,"never let someone else define who you are, that is your realm alone".

...and I never mess with Attorney's. Not to be critical of them, but they ALWAYS seem to be pissed off at something, somebody, somewhere.  ;)

I envisioned you POUNDING AWAY on the keyboard. I could hear it from here!  8)

OH and I just wanted you to know that I have  a big poster of your car...so please don't sue me?

Try being married to an attorney!   I've had a few tell me they hope their clients rot away in jail yet they still give them the best representation they can which is their job and I respect that. A lot of attorneys have tough jobs and the ones I know are very down to earth nice people.

Back to the previously scheduled program now. On most forums I'm on, a high number of posts will more often than not equate to better than decent knowledge which obviously is not alway the case so once again im all in when it comes to deleting post counts.  I enjoy this forum and purchased an amazing car thru here (thanks again Z ray) and have even learned more about old bicycles thru PM chats here.  The knowledge obtained here is incredible.  I do like the idea of maybe someones credentials below their SAAC handle. Such as concours judge, restorer of award winning  SAAC judged cars, etc etc.

Kiwis spirit will always live on and I really appreciate the work that Brian Littlefield contributes to the forum as well.

Yes, hopefully it would eliminate a lot of the non Shelby related posts of which I see way to many of.

Yes indeed the market has spoken and one has to realize that you have one less  buyer with a large disposable income is off the market.

More cars less buyers with that "cash money"
Not only is your first sentence has no real substance to it rooted in fact(See Speegle's post above) your second sentence is why so many dislike you on the forum.

I concur. FL SAAC is hoping that the entire collector car market will tank to the point that he'll be able to purchase a '66 GT350 for $80K. Sadly, for him, it ain't gonna happen. Those days are long gone, never to return.  His best bet is to find a good, solid K-Code fastback and work his way up the food chain like so many of us did in years gone by.

That was an 80K offer in last years (or however long ago) market. If the market did drop significantly maybe his offer would now be 60K
