1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Turn Signal Woes
« on: September 29, 2019, 06:22:37 PM »
Took the car for a ride in April and while sitting eating ice cream I smelt a burning smell and then saw some wiffs of smoke coming from the steering column.  I killed the battery and towed it home.

I finally got around to looking into it today and I found this.  Last winter I replaced the turn signal switch while repairing the tail lights.  I purchased a brand new repop part.  Any guesses as to what would cause this?

So I’m on a date with my wife on Friday and we’re sitting eating some ice cream.  The car is running cause my key ignition switch is starting to fail.  As I sit there we notice a funny smell then I see some smoke coming from what looks like the steering column.  So I shut off the car, pull the batt cable and tow the car home on a roll back.

Saturday I get a moment to open up the dash.  I pull the Steering wheel, the dash cluster, the ash tray and ignition switch to “look” and see if there is any obvious charring.  There is none.  I hook the batt up and wait to see if I can see anything, and there’s nothing.  I run the car looking intently for smoke but don’t see anything.  then out of the corner of my eye is see arcing.  The heater/defroster controls are loose and the fan is in the on position.  And it is arcing from the control panel to the metal dash, turn the fan control off and it stops.  It’s only a few millimeters away but still its clear as day.  Then today I install a new ignition switch and put it in place.  Again I start the car and check the controls and same result.  Arcing when the fan is in the on position.

Then just for grins I hit the horn and it shoots sparks out of the ring in the wheel that makes contact with the horn.  Tried it again with the same results.

I can’t imagine this is normal or right.  What on earth is going on? I’d love some help if anyone has run into anything like this before or has any thoughts...Thanks.

Regional Shows and Events / 2019 Rallye66 Benefit Car Show Carthage, MO
« on: January 10, 2019, 10:48:16 AM »
I am working on something special for the 2019 Rallye66 Benefit Car Show which is held in Carthage, MO on Sunday, April 28.  While I understand this is a long shot to work the way I've dreamed it, I'm gonna cast the net out there anyway.

One of the greatest comments I get when folks see my 68 GT350 Vert is, I can't believe you drive this car.  To which I respond, isn't that why it was made? What good is a car you can't drive?  Anyway, the public loves Shelby's.  They are such an iconic part of our Muscle Car Culture and I love sharing that with people at our local shows and while I may not win very many awards, our Shelby is often the most looked at and discussed and questioned, lol.

So, to the point of this post.  I am making a Shelby class this year for our benefit show.  It would include all years and all makes of Shelby's.  So yes my old 68 would be in competition with a new GT350 but the class isn't about the best car but about the fascination the public has with these cars and the joy they get in being close to them.  I am officially inviting any who can make it to our event.  I realize the group of people who will actually be able to come is very small due to time and location and distance but I am extending the invitation all the same.

Our show is a benefit for a local Ministry called Peterson Outdoor Ministries.  The folks there work almost exclusively with our wounded combat vets.  POM provides hunting and fishing opportunities for these vets and is equipped to take even the most severely disabled veteran out on these hunts.  The amount of lives they are changing through their love and care is amazing.  They are making a difference and inspiring these men and women to live life again.  They reach out veterans of all our nations conflicts.

Below is a link to our site.  I am still updating the website for 2019 but most of the information is there.  Thank you all for even reading the post.  God Bless and I hope to meet you in person on April 28.

FYI-We are smack dab in the middle of Route66, AKA THE MOTHER ROAD, from Carthage you can hit 3 states in about 30min of driving hitting MO, OK and KS.  Lots of iconic sights to see here.  66 Drive-in, Joplin, MO, Galena KS where the original Tow-Mater is found.  Tons of fun.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Brake Light Switch
« on: December 15, 2018, 08:11:46 PM »
OK.  So I’m needing some help on wiring again.  I’m still having some issues on the right side of the tail/stop/turn lights.  Left side is great and bright.  I did a test yesterday and found that the right side is pretty glitchy.  Sometimes it works and sometimes not.  Sometimes dim etc..

I dug under the dash and took some pics and found what looks to be AN issue.  Perhaps not the issue but it can’t help.  Looks like the brake light switch has some very sketchy wiring.  Could y’all help with where to get replacement wiring.  I’ve looked on Coralsnakes site but didnt’ see this particular piece.

The brake light switch is easy to find but the wiring seems to be different...

Here’s a look at what I have.

Thanks for the help

« on: December 09, 2018, 07:19:33 PM »
It seems like I read a post on this pre-forum crash but what floor mats came the 68’s originally? There doesn’t seem to be anything out there to purchase or research. As alway thank you and please forgive my ignorance...

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Unknown Connector Behind the Dash
« on: November 09, 2018, 10:24:22 PM »
I noticed this time when I pulled out the instrument cluster that I had a connector that I couldn’t obviously see where it connects.  Wondered if you guys could offer some assistance? Thanks. Also, has anyone ever installed the Scott Drake turn signal harness in your 68 Shelby or Mustangs? I have two extra wires that aren’t in the original harness, a yellow/black and grey wire.

Here’s the extra two wires.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Turn Signal Lever Column part
« on: October 23, 2018, 07:45:45 PM »
Help Please.  While adjusting my tilt wheel, not tilt away, with the turn signal lever the part inside the column it screws into broke.  For the life of me I can’t figure out what to call it to look for the part, if its even available.  Could you please help me out with what it’s called and where I can get one, or ideas to fix this if you think epoxy or something would work.  Thanks.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Non-matching confirmed but now what
« on: June 02, 2018, 02:56:08 PM »
Today I located and took a pic of the engine serial number. I was almost certain the engine was non-original to the car and the pic confirmed it. The pic shows 8P*127875. With the starter on the car I can’t see the block info but there is no build stamp above the fuel pump. So what can I glean from this number, anything?

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Correct part number for 350 alt/no air
« on: June 01, 2018, 11:00:36 AM »
After reading the responses for my tail light issue I realize my alt isn’t charging the way it should be. In bringing over parts from PO I saw that I have an alt with autolite casing and what appears to be a pulley with a Ford part number, C5AF-10A 352-L.Could someone please tell me what the correct part number for the alt should be? If this is original I’ll have it rebuilt.

Hoping y’all can shed some light on this. About a month ago I fired up the car, 68 350 conv, to go to a car show.  Being that it was dark outside I turned the lights on and as soon as I did the car died. Tried several other times with the same result. I have changed the batt and the voltage on the battery while running is above 13v. In experimenting I noticed the car dies as the parking lights come on and I also have no tail lights. Brake lights, turn signal and flashers are all operational.

Any help on my next direction would really be appreciated.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Tail light/brake light issues
« on: May 10, 2018, 09:33:52 PM »
Hey y’all! The rear wiring harness in my car has been pretty butchered through the years. I will eventually replace it but I’m trying to find the correct locations for the ground wires for the rear light harness.  Could someone pleas post a few pics of your trunk so I can see where the grounds are supposed be and what they are supposed to look like? Thanks

Jude
