CSX 2000 Series / Re: Halibrand / Kidney bean wheels
« on: March 02, 2024, 07:24:11 PM »
Hi Ralf,
I think you would benefit by contacting Mike McCluskey Ltd. He has a long history with Cobras and may be able to answer your wheel
questions. His shop contact info is:       23890 Madison St.
                                                                       Torrance Ca. 90505
web site says phone (310) 375-1234
Hope this helps out. How long have you had this car?  Where are you located?
Regards R.R.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Re: 10-Soke lug nuts
« on: February 27, 2024, 11:00:55 AM »
Hi Steve,
I hope you have a shop manual for this car, as it will normally show as well as explain wheel details. Typical instructions say to use
anti sieze only between the hub and wheel surface-studs are to be clean and dry and wheels torqued in a star pattern to 100 ft lbs.
the most important step is a retorque after driving 500 miles. Aluminium wheels will "move" more than steel and it is VERY important
to check them after driving. This is also in the registry AND is for original wheels that use a tapered type lug nut. Most new 10 spokes
use a flat surface type lug with a washer and this type can use the same specs. We have seen both types come loose  so do not take any chances on a loose wheel. Stay safe.

Hi Hipo Fans,
First a huge THANK YOU to Dan for sharing a wealth of knowledge.
Second comment is the main bearing caps are considered part of the assembly by Ford, and were machined to match after passing the inspection process. A block is stamped with several dates and the date as well as the assembler or inspector initial follows as
Roy's pictures show. Final assembly date normally would mean it has passed all tests for oil/water/leaks and final inspection(s)
Any machining of the deck surface can eliminate this date code so if you are rebuilding- make an effort to photograph prior to any
machine work. Does anyone know how many engines were produced in 63-67 time frame ?

1967 Shelby GT350/500 / Re: 428 compression
« on: February 18, 2024, 08:54:38 PM »
Hi all involved,
Just a few points that may help. According to the shop manual "engine" section a variation of 20 psi from specified pressure is satisfactory. It also says an accurate test is done on a fully warmed up engine, and goes on to say primary  throttle plates open-5 pumping strokes-then record the highest reading. Repeat on all cylinders. Unless you have magical talent this is impossible with an engine installed in a car. The most accurate way to determine an engines condition is a leakdown tester. Knowing most people only dream of owning one they are rarely used. Knowing this engine after years of use it is normal to find worn valve guides which leads to poor valve sealing. The rocker arm geometry on/with oem parts causes the valve to wear out the guide. Worn guides lead to poor valve sealing and  if only 1 cylinder is low on compression it is the most likely cause. Best advice is open it up while it is out and inspect everything. If you are deep enough to be doing bearings you should not have any trouble finding out why compression is lower in one cylinder. Spend whatever time it takes to clean all parts and be certain to prime the oil system prior to running the engine.
Hope this is useful information. Keep us in the loop as you progress.
Regards R.R.

SAAC Forum Discussion Area / Re: monte carlo bars
« on: February 09, 2024, 02:13:46 PM »
Hi all interested in these- any idea who made them? They were first used on the Falcons prepped to run in the Monte Carlo Rally if
we understand the history behind the name.......so were they made by an outside company like Dearborn Steel Tube ? I have yet to
ever see them listed by Ford like the "Export Package" was. Doubtfull Shelby made them in house. So does anyone know the history
behind them?

Misc. For Sale / Re: For Sale or Trade: 1987 SAAC Registry

Hi,
Just a quick history lesson on the Merlin. By largest count they were assembeled by Packard so even with the RR connection they
are still somewhat domestic. Also way above the Generous Mistake Allison for power-reliability-and most say the Merlin is the best
QUALITY 12 EVER. Packard was the supplier of engines for tanks as well as marine vessels of WW2. They never get the credit they
deserve, and so much of what we use in todays cars can be traced back to them. Sorry for the rant, it is not meant to upset anyone
just to keep history accurate.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Re: Engine dating question
« on: December 09, 2023, 02:48:02 PM »
Hi to folks who really study collector cars.
No matter what type of collectible it is--car--coin--toy--the basic rules of condition, documentation, and amount produced always are
key factors in value. In the case of an engine block or assembly if this is an original it still may be worthless if improper storage has
corroded critical machined parts or it has cracked. I think it is more important to find out why it was removed in the first place, and
what its current condition is....will it be practical to save/restore this engine ? or is it just old metal. If it was a special casting like a
302 tunnel port block-from a car with documented race history this may be worth the effort. If it is a 2 bolt main 302  the one that
is currently in your car may be healthier and best left in place. As a few have mentioned it may not be worth much as it is from a mass
produced car nothing more. Sometimes the seller needs to verify that there is a good reason to finally say it has gone back to the
current owner, and hopefully you can agree on something.  Good luck with whatever takes place.

Hi,
All good points made so far
Please make it a promise to properly torque all lugs to 75-100
ft lbs and check all the lugs again after the car is driven. Failing to do this can be dangerous!! Do not risk a loose wheel.
