1965 GT350/R-Model / Re: Registering and titling a '65 GT350
« on: March 07, 2024, 08:29:34 PM »

-Why not register it it California utilizing your NM address and run 'black plates'?
In years past CA req'd a Californian or at least a CA address, but that stopped at least a decade ago.
They just want the fee. So my current CA title has a NV address and I can run my 'serialized' HPM NQR 842 plates (numerically right between Vic Edelbrock's (RIP) ‘65 and Bob Key's (RIP) ‘65 in the order HPM sold them-most cool);

-regarding official paperwork: I bought my car in 1974 from the original owner who bought it directly from HPM. HPM never sold him a 'Ford' nor a 'Shelby', nor is it now. I have always renewed using the original paperwork verbiage from HPM:
The make is: 'MUSTA’, and;
the body type model is: 'CPEGT350';
The VIN is SFM5S339.
That's it!
BTW there has never been a query or mention of value or anything. Entirely unremarkable.
Mike-check it out.

That Ray Wolff red notchback #9?
Has anyone covered that car? Maybe I’ve missed it ??
Not trimmed as a Group ll, but talk about SAI DNA, wow.

or $522.5 - depending on which side of the hose you were on!

That engine bay is very nice!

Which begs the question:

I wonder what a complete car is worth?

Shelby American History / Re: 1971-72 Maier Racing Catalog
« on: January 08, 2024, 01:44:06 AM »

Bob,
What car, by chance, did you make that trip in? Sounds great!
Arntz, now there’s a blast from the past. Cobra clones, whoda’ thunk it?

Dave,
It’s too bad you’re such a modest guy. This place would benefit seeing your cars, and how you use them!
We are not talkin some aloof  ‘hedge- fund-auction collector’ here. There was once a time when you went to a local COCOA meeting and actually ‘talked shop’ w fellow owner-drivers - who turned their own wrenches!
CS, when he was pushing dried chili-powder, used to show up and kick tires at Pacific Stereo in Anaheim at our monthly meetings.
Before the days of huckster ‘autographs’ and lawyers.
Still have your CJ Fairlane? Most bitchin.

Dave,

Thanks for posting!
I lived out of that catalog for years. Maier was the ONLY source for 65 GT-350 hard parts.
Mid-70's, made a 450 mile road trip to visit, then to SF, then to visit Gordon Gimble in south SAC, who was the only source for CSX parts.
Taking a 3.89 C7FE '65 into SF 'in the blind' to 'see the sights': no map, no plan, no sideview mirror, blaring side exhaust ... what a workout.

Re Bill Maier: never did really understand what a 'racing diaper' was (?).

/Steve

ps - now that I think about it: JC Whitney (of all places!) had a few SAI parts -crazy, Valley Ford Parts in SF Valley had a few, and Airport Ford -near LAX- had S1MS/S2MS parts on heir shelves into the mid 70s. SAI was long closed and other than dated proximity I don't really know why, but they did.

For all of the coverage of this car, no mention of the original engine.
Interesting vocabulary utilized by the auction house: a 'prerequisite' 289 (?).
Any pics of the block casting date, engine assembly, or engine machining dates?

12 May 1965 SAI arrival Mustangs (which this car is) are easily cross indexed for validity.
Can a car attain 'SAAC Gold' or 'MCA Concours Gold' without its original engine?

It had a button-top and a black solenoid when Legendary had it.

Chris,
That was me. A long time ago!
It was great seeing you at LeMans.

sfm5,
Yes, actually deliberately not placed on on my initial repaint. Car has had many looks over the years, I think I liked that one the most. Very understated.
Incidentally, it was originally a fully striped HPM car, despite erroneous info somebody placed in the that farcical 'registry'. 5S339.

That car has the wrong wheels (but the color is pretty close).

Thoroughbred SAAC/MCA/Mid America etc etc...
99% original parts etc etc...

Just a fleeting glimpse of that interior shows the wrong shifter and wrong oil pressure gauge, is that 1%?
I could imagine what a chassis/drivetrain/unibody inspection could reveal.

Judges?

Up For Auction / Re: 5S305 - Bring A Trailer

1. Re the eng assy dte: he shows a receipt for having the block decked ($140). That most likely removed that date, however, this car arrived the same day at SAI as mine (5/9/65) and the block casting date is the same day as mine (4/19/65);
2. The engine parts (save dist and perhaps water pump) appear ‘mostly there’. The lost parts: T10M, diff and carrier, f shocks, r springs, radiator, windshield etc etc along w the package tray are what’s missing;
3. Re package tray: how are the repros these days? Earlier (?) repros didn’t have the same matting as viewed fr the trunk and the surface stipple was incorrect. Any good ones on market now?
