An ad I scanned from my copy of the Thursday, January 14, 1971 edition of the Southern MotoRacing newspaper.

Up For Auction / Re: HERTZ Sports Car Club Jacket Yellow - Medium
« on: March 15, 2024, 10:41:21 AM »
Just to clarify my statements - I don't know that the Cougar branded (white jacket, red stripes) Hertz jacket I have in my collection is legitimate.

This yellow and black Hertz Sports Car Club jacket for sale on eBay looks like the one that I have, which I know is for reals.

Well, Hertz had quite a lot of these branded advertising/promotional items created, with more than a few dedicated to their "Sports Car Club" program.

I know that these items were given away for marketing purposes as gifts to clients and business partners.

What I don't know is if they were also offered for sale to John Q. Public. I've never seen any sort of a catalog or price sheet. Anyone remember walking into a Hertz office back-in-the-day when the Sports Club program was active and seeing stuff for sale?

At one point I had at least four of these jackets. I sold two and kept the nicest one plus a Cougar Hertz jacket (not convinced that one is legit).

The one I have is complete and in nicer shape than this jacket plus it fits me so it is probably an XL.

Just watched the video, which is terrific BTW.

Was surprised to learn that Dean Jeffries painted the Cougar II. Don't believe I have ever heard that tidbit.

To me, another example of how interwoven the fabric is of the production cars that we love, and the hot rod and custom car community that was so vibrant at the time (think TV/Movie cars and model kits) being tapped behind the scenes by the manufacturers.

Looks like a '67 Shelby in the background.

^^^ as well it should be!

For several of these (including your B9 Cougar Ed) I used a test printing that my printer runs on scrap shirts for me to approve before we go to press.

As for wearing them - I have multiples of every shirt I create so plenty to wear. Plus more than a few I can't fit in anymore  :P

Thanks Pete - Yes, the stitching is a nice touch that the quilter suggested.

I simplified a couple of the vintage Mercury Cougar logos and provided vector art that her machine could then trace.

Lots of us are in the same boat at this stage in our lives. We spend the first 3 quarters of our lives gathering stuff, and then the last quarter trying to get rid of it!

The choices aren't easy - I love my stuff! If it gives you joy, then it has value. Plus, I need visual stimulation to do what I do for a living (graphics).

I've done a metric ton of club/show/race t-shirts lo these past 40 years or so...

So here is an idea of something you can do with the stacks of shirts you may have accumulated over the years, find a quilt maker and have a quilt (or two) made. We raffled off a couple as door prizes at our last Cougar Club event.

Last years Jefferson 500 vintage race at Summit Point was a Marlboro Speedway reunion.

Here is the poster I did - loosely based on a Bill Dobbins photograph. It features Jerry Crawford winning the Governor's Cup in his McLaren and flagger Tex Hopkins doing his thing.

That particular kit was designed by Larry Shinoda for Fiberfab if I'm not mistaken.
