Up For Auction / Re: 8T02R21031703701 on BAT

There are two issues here, one why would anyone "hammer" an owner so much that it reflects poorly on an entire group or club?

Secondly, if you are that thin skinned that the comments of a couple people bother you, you should probably stay home
I assume the owner did from that point on when it came to SAAC conventions. This was conveyed to me by my cousin who painted the  car back then. I have not seen this car publicly since the 100 years Ford show in 2003 and he wasn't around. I didn't know the guy but knew who he was since he bought the car off a guy I knew, had my cousin paint it then bought the supercharged B9 engine off of a good friend. The car is portrayed as a GT500 in the pic I posted but when Lee owned it and later sold it in the auto trader(5500) it was listed as a real KR. I wonder if it is in the 68 registry.

Someone decided to destroy a KR , I hope that 100,000 watt stereo system works  :(
The car can be returned to original specs relatively easy. Here is one that cannot be. The owner back around 3+ decades ago finished this car the way it looks in the pic. He took it to a SAAC convention and got hammered for destroying a KR(Said he would never attend another meet ever). Well the car was a totaled KR that Lee Detrick bought and  built into a drag car(well known Detroit drag racer along with his brother Clyde). I remember Lee building this car in his garage 4 decades ago as he lived a few blocks from me. Drag raced it and sold it as a roller. Next guy bought it. Had my Cousin paint it black with silver stripes and had a 460 in it. Won the Frankenmuth car show(car was on next year's trophy). Then the blown Boss 9 engine was installed in it. The blown engine came out of my friend's Sanger boat. Hard to bring this one back to stock.

1965 GT350/R-Model / Re: Registering and titling a '65 GT350
« on: March 09, 2024, 07:01:18 AM »
I know this has probably been asked many times, but this is the first '65 GT350 I have ever had so wanted to check. I see on the title of the car I am buying has only the Shelby serial number, no Ford VIN. I am assuming my state, New Mexico, will transfer the title using that number on it and the registration without any problems or questions about a Ford VIN. I am hoping all states recognize the Shelby serial number and not a Ford VIN, correct?
Unfortunately all states are not the same and it is more a bureaucratic issue meaning it depends on the state and also the person in the state. Technically Shelby and the Shelby VIN is the MFG of record and all states should recognize that. Some times you may have to argue the point with supporting documentation to get the correct way. If you are lucky you will not. In the end it really doesn't matter if you can't win the argument because there was only one Ford VIN that went with one specific Shelby VIN and vice versa.  On the tax side a 65 Shelby VIN can be easily flagged in the system for its high 6 figure value in those states that collect personal property tax every year base on the cars value. That is what happens in my home state of MO on a evolving basis for classic cars that are identifiable as high value. A Ford VIN identifies a old Mustang not worth enough to bother.

that's interesting that MO will flag certain vins. In Ca (at least 10 years ago) there was absolutely nothing like that.  You could register any car with Vin number SFM5S*** or FZZ....... (Ferrari) and nothing will trigger any alerts. I was told by multiple sources with much DMV knowledge that absolutely no one looks at VIN #s when sales are reported (private party) and their is no disclosed selling price by the seller.
If they still don't notice anything in CA count yourself lucky . In my state of MO they will do what ever they need to so as to bring in more tax revenue. It is more so with the name Shelby,Pantera ,Cobra etc. that cause the red flag to raise . They caught my Pantera because of its name on the title and accessed its value based on a CPI book at the time (Cars of Particular Interest)that they used for that office but not my 1965 MKII Cobra which had "65 Ford" on the title or any of my Shelby's which had Ford Mustang. The Mustang value and the 65 Ford were accessed at extremely low fraction of what the Pantera book value was. I felt I got off lucky given the Pantera was the least valuable of the bunch by comparison. We pay personal property tax on cars annually.
what is the personal property tax rate on autos in Mo? I read online where Va is 4.15 per 100 so that would be 4150 per 100K per year just to own the car in Va? that is nuts. Here in Mi I have paid ZERO for years and have a lifetime same year plate on my Shelby. Ditto for my Mach1.

Yes that's a usual thing I see often and it don't make sense to mount fiberglass like this.

I always did it the right way and thought its wrong and was not done like this by the factory but I thought its better for the fiberglass and years later I found a concours restored one at a saac meet and found out my thinking and doing was right as they mounted it the same way like I did all the years.

By the way I need one of these top panels does someone here has one for sale?
what boggles my mind is the header brackets have a threaded extruded hole for the bolt so why would anyone mount it wrong because you would need a nut or clip on the backside to hold it in place and possibly tightening up on the extruded hole.

people should call and then ask why "why are you using my car in your ad"? since the scammer doesn't own it how can he know if you really own it or not. He'd get the hint after a few do it.

As you mention, it is is titled in another state with the Shelby VIN, SFM5Sxxx. This is 100% correct. That is the "official" VIN and the only one that should be on the title.

Although I am not familiar with your state's DMV, there should be absolutely no problem titling it with that same number in your state. In Virginia, they would title it exactly as listed on the out of state title.

As far as the "model or make" listed, it doesn't really matter, although you definitely want it to be a "1965." I've seen "Ford," "Mustang," "Shelby," etc.
States vary on how they title Shelbys even in the same state. My 70 Vert is titled as a Ford even though my French title turned in  said 1970 Shelby GT350 Cabriolet. My 68 Shelby had a Shelby title. That is Michigan.

The video of this episode of Tom Cotter’s program has posted on YouTube.   Just look for “Barn Find Hunter”.   The 42 minute video covers many interesting cars stored there, plus maybe 10 minutes on the two prototype Cobra’s and uses CSX2367 as contrast.  Jim Maxwell provides some good perspective on the cars.   The prototype Cobra section is at about 30 minutes in, but the whole program is fascinating. Tom and his crew do a great job.    I had difficulty posting a link, so just search on however you get YouTube.     Dave

Brian if you look at the Mustang II at  42:36 into the video he mentions my friend Mark Haas who has a "similar" car that the full history hasn't been determined yet. Also you see the gas cap? Mark gave me some pieces and I made that gas cap for the Mustang II. The original one had been missing for decades. Mark got  some parts that were just like his gas cap and they looked like the gas cap in period pics of the II so I did some fabrication. Dave-the curator- and I at MCACN. I was on a time crunch to get the cap done for the show.

Mike, How about a LLC in Montana and eliminate the taxes on it altogether.

too many times restorers put the fiberglass header  BEHIND the brackets on the nose. First pic  of red car is WRONG. Second one on the white car is correct on the bracket being under the header.
