Appeals / 351-C Heads
July 15, 2022, 02:37:19 PM
Any 351-C experts able to help with identifying 4-V quench heads? The car I'm looking at has a 4 cast into the head next to the valve cover flange. I remember that there are two markings. One with just the 4 and another with a 4 and a dot casting. I thought the 4 with a dot are the quench heads for higher compression.

Can anyone confirm?

Thank you.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / KR shocks
May 05, 2022, 08:01:12 AM
Can anyone recommend a set of shocks for a 68 KR that look somewhat original and are good for a car that will be frequently driven? It's time to remove the Koni's I installed 40+ years ago.

In addition, I think the front shocks get painted Ford Corporate Blue and the rears are supposed to be semi-gloss black with an orange paint marking for identification. The orange is on the build sheets I have for my car (#04412) Any detailing photos of the front and rear shocks would be great.

Thank you.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / 68 KR tuning issue
March 27, 2022, 09:30:43 AM
Need help / advise on issue with a 482 custom stroker crate engine tune. I'm still getting a serious bog under load. I'm using a Quick Fuels Q-Series 750 with the following current settings. They are as follows:

Primary jet #74
Secondary jet#84 with jet extensions
Primary power valve #45
Secondary power valve: plugged
Primary nozzle: #31
Secondary nozzle: #31
Accelerator pump: 30 cc primary & secondary
Pump cam: Pink #2 position

Cam is a Comp Cams solid roller
Intake: .691
Exhaust: .702
Lobe separation 112 degrees

Idle set at 950 rpm with 9" vacuum. Vacuum increases to approximately 14" at 2,000 rpm (checked with no load).

When trying to get the car moving, I'm getting a terrible bog and a slight lean backfire, so I know I need to get more initial fuel with the accelerator pump and cam as well as increasing the primary nozzle. I'm think I need to go to the green cam #2 position and increase to a #35 primary nozzle. My question is do I need to change the power valve also or? I'm lost on how to best size the power valve. The idle vacuum seems like the #45 is OK, but I don't know if I should change to a #55 or #65.

The engine dyno #'s are very good, but it was dyno'd from 4,600 rpm to 6,600 rpm, so no info on low end.

Any help or advise is greatly appreciate. The neighbor are starting to get angry with the holeshots to get the car moving.

Thank you.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / 4-spd KR's
January 09, 2022, 07:24:03 AM
Did all 4-spd KR's have the gold shift pattern plates on the console? My car did not have the shift pattern plate when I bought it in 1981, but it was a drag car, and the console was removed for a Hurst Super-Shifter. Just finished refurbishing the console and was wondering if I need the shift pattern plate?

Attached are a couple of photos of the restored gauge cluster for my 68 KR. Thanks to Orlando Mustang for restoring the gauge cluster and installing a new tachometer.

Bought a black flocking kit off of Amazon and tried it today on my 68KR console I'm refurbishing. It worked OK, but  I should have used a heavier coat of the paint adhesive on the sides. Instructions indicate 10 - 15-minute working time on the adhesive paint, but the 80-degree temperature today caused the paint to dry faster. Attached are photos of the instructions and my results. I used pinstriping tape to try to get straight lines on the finish, but I think i would alter the process slightly. Wish I had another insert, as I think I could get much better results after the first try. Hope this might help someone who is looking to refurbish their console insert.

Can anyone advise on what the voltage should be for the inner, middle and outer bulbs, as I'm trying to troubleshoot my sequential signals and emergency flashers? My voltage at the turn signal flasher is 11.4 volts. Battery is 12.6 volts. Readings at the emergency flasher sockets are as follows:

inner bulbs 10.0 volts flashing
middle bulb 8.0 volts flashing
outer bulb 6.0 volts flashing

Checked my ground and cleaned all the taillight sockets with a Dremel and wire wheel, so the connections are good. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / 68 tailight panel removal

To service the rear taillight sockets, it appears that the taillight panel must be removed. Does the bumper also have to be removed?

Does anyone know if the 2007 GT 500 factory stripes are Performance White or Oxford White? Trying to find the correct color for a Cervini "ram air" hood similar to a GT 500KR hood. My invoice just says "white"!

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / 68 deluxe gauge cluster
September 27, 2021, 05:41:08 PM
Does anyone have a recommended source for the best 68 deluxe gauge cluster available or a source to plastic re-chrome an original cluster? I know the Ford replacement cluster I installed years ago is different than the original, but it was the best available option at the time. It is know yellowed and the plastic chrome has started to peel. I've recently received a new NPD catalog and they have a good / best repro. Anyone recently buy a reproduction gauge cluster that can share their experience? Will be pulling my cluster out tomorrow to put a new tachometer in my car, as the factory tachometer has a noticeable lag. Will resore the cluster and lenses at the same time, so any input will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Looking for a recommended power brake vacuum pump and an installation method that minimizes the need for drilling holes. I have a Summit cast vacuum pump that has been sitting on the shelf and was thinking the driver side wheel well and the hood hinge bolts for a bracket mount? Thought I could run the vacuum hose under the cowl lip / export brace from the carb spacer vacuum port to a check valve provided in the Summit kit. The check valve will then have a tee to the vacuum pump and to the brake booster. I guess I also need to consider a water shield or cover for the vacuum pump if installed in the wheel well.

Anyone have a recommendation and photos they can share of a clean vacuum pump installation?

Thanks for any recommendations / suggestions.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / GT 500KR Fuel pressure
August 11, 2021, 07:16:32 PM
Learned a bit of an expensive lesson today, that I thought I would share, to hopefully save someone any grief. I decided to use a 67 GT 500 pre-bent fuel line from fuel pump up to a 45 degree inverted flair that attaches to a Summit fuel line and pressure gauge. This makes a very clean installation for a double pumper carburetor. I then decide to upgrade to a liquid filled fuel pressure gauge. The issue started when I started up the car cold and the gauge would read
5 1/2 psi so everything was good until the car started to get warm. As the car came up to temperature, the gauge started to read lower and lower until it would read about 2 psi! To make a long story short, changed the fuel filter, installed a new tank and sender as well as cleaned and flushed the lines. Started the car up and the same scenario, as the car came up to temperature the fuel pressure was dropping until it would be 2 psi on the liquid filled gauge. Thought maybe the 10% ethanol pump fuel sold here in Florida was vaporizing as the fuel lines got hot Insulate the lines. Same result. Googled liquid filled fuel pressure gauge and guess what? A liquid filled fuel pressure gauge will change readings as temperatures change. Attached is a Summit Racing bulletin regarding this phenomena. Hope this helps someone in the future.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / July 23rd build date KR
August 06, 2021, 07:22:22 AM
Anyone have a July 23rd build date KR that can confirm their head casting dates? My car has May 18 casting date on the one head I have been able to get to in storage, however my car was raced in the 70's and not sure if the head is original to the car? No serial # visible, just multiple J's stamped into the end of the head. Going to try to get to the other head today, so any info is appreciated.

Thank you.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Clutch pedal height
July 22, 2021, 03:49:43 PM
Making final adjustments today and was wondering if an approximate 2" difference in height from the brake pedal to clutch pedal is common for a KR? My brake pedal is about 6" from the floorboard to the pedal and that seems to be within specification. Just not sure of the clutch pedal height. Looked at old magazine and photos on-line and it appears that there is an offset. Any input is appreciated.

Thank you.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / KR dipstick tube
July 19, 2021, 09:54:17 AM
Looking for help with a few good photos of the proper KR dipstick tube and attachment at the head with the correct spacer for power steering. Is the NPD "exact reproduction" dipstick tube a quality part? Not sure I have the correct tube, as it appears to me that the offset from the end that goes into the block and the "J" mounting bracket does not have enough offset or the bracket is not indexed correctly on the dipstick tube? Eyeballing the offset looks like it would need to be about 2"

Does the dipstick tube bracket mount to the first exhaust manifold bolt or to the head at the power steering mounting bolt? I can see the tube working if it mounts to the exhaust manifold bolt in lieu of behind the power steering spacer?

What is the best way to install a new dipstick tube into the block with the engine in the car? Any tips or suggestions are appreciated. Should the tube bottom out on the flange or how do you know when it is seated at the correct depth so the dipstick registers correctly?

Thanks for the help as always!

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Upper side scoops
July 12, 2021, 06:17:07 PM
Just wondering how well the paint coverage was on original upper side scoops. Can anyone share any original paint photos? My car was repainted in the late 70's before I bought it and coverage of the body color inside the upper side scoop is minimal. Was thinking about shooting some body color on the scoops, but would like to get a good idea what would have been acceptable.

Thank you.
