Jay,

I'll take the 3.89 gear set if still available.

Just my observation, but the early KR air cleaner decals that have the Autolite star leave much to be desired. Looks like a poor copy of a copy to me.

Make an indexing tab and use VHB tape or pop rivet to base. A U-shaped tab will keep the base from rotating just like a typical Ford air cleaner base. 3M VHB tape will work in most instances but not sure how it will perform in a gasoline and heat environment. Pop rivets would be my choice.

Yes, it does look like a reject!

I guess I'll straighten the edges and leave the ripples.

Thanks for the input. Love this site.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / KR air cleaner top

Getting ready to restore my air cleaner and noticed the top has ripples in the stamping? Is this common?

Thanks.

I had the same issue with my KR after letting it set for a few years. Drained tank, all new hoses and fuel lines as well as a new Edelbrock hi-volume fuel pump, but no fuel at the carburetor. Loosened the fuel line connection at the carburetor, cranked the engine briefly and instant fuel.

Thought maybe someone would remember this car from the early 70's racing in the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia area? One name that popped up on this car was Al & Linda Kapp who from my understanding, brought the car from Scottsdale, AZ back to Newark, DE specifically to race?

Any info, photos or contacts would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I have 245-60 x 15 rear tires and they are 26.6" diameter. Chart indicates 71 mph @ 3,500 rpm with 3.89 gears.

Depends on your tire diameter. I used a conversion chart available on line to plug in the gear ratio and actual tire diameter and it will provide speed for every 100 rpm in fourth gear based on a 1.0 fourth gear ratio. I have a chart that I taped to the dash when I drove from Daytona to Pittsburgh for the SAAC
Convention the first time. I know use a GPS, as I hooked up the cigar lighter.

FYI. Used Xylene to soften and remove the wheel emblem. Took about 20 minutes for the Xylene to soften the adhesive if trying to save the original emblems.
Xylene did not affect the argent or medium grey metallic original finishes.

Has anyone restored the felt like finish inside the console? I've seen some flocking kits in the hobby stores and might seem like a possible method? What was done from the factory?

Finally pulled out the four 68 Shelby hubcaps I bought and find that three are painted in the reveal area next to the center emblem and one is polished chrome. Just want to confirm that they should be painted a medium charcoal in the reveal area adjacent to the emblem?

I like the chrome look better, but one of the center castings I have has some corrosion pitting, so the paint would hide this better. Pulled all four apart and they are a complicated multi-piece stamped stainless ring and friction ring that I assume is crimped while being manufactured. I can see why nobody would be interested in stamping these!

Have been experimenting with detailing and painting the cast center hub and find that a 1" diameter gasket cutter covers the simulate lug nuts and washers. (Same could be accomplished with a 1" O.D. plastic pipe, reamed and beveled to fit snuggly on the simulated lug nuts to prevent paint overspray.) I know the concourse method is to leave a trapezoidal area around the lug nut unpainted, but I think since my wheel covers are driver quality, I'm going to paint around the lug nut and washers?

What is the best method to remove the old center emblems? Is there a good release agent that will only affect the adhesive and not ruin the emblem itself?

All input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
