SAAC Forum Discussion Area / Re: fuel issue
March 10, 2024, 08:10:34 AM
Gentlemen, this is a huge issue and it has just become apparent to people in Canada.  Last July, the federal government started adding 10% ethanol to all fuel sold at gas stations. From personal experience, I can tell you that ethanol destroys Stewart, Warner fuel pump diaphragms and it's probably gonna make our carburetors leak and cause fuel fires in the engine compartments of our cars. The alternative is to either use race gas which is illegal or take the ethanol out of the pump gas, resulting in very low quality, low octane gasoline unless you add a fuel additive, or don't drive your car. All of this is being done because of the massive impact we are supposedly having on global warming by driving our old cars on the weekends. Another alternative is too find a source for high octane, non-ethanol, gas and store it in your garage or trailer
, which is a significant risk. I've not been able to come up with a great solution.  Maybe somebody else has
.  It's also no good for my motorcycles, two stroke, lawnmower, weed whacker, etc. The real solution is to make available gas for hobby cars.

CSX 3000 Series / LeMans float bowl settings
August 31, 2023, 06:29:33 AM
Ok Cobra Guru's, I might have forgotten the correct way to do this so I am checking with the brain trust. I
I'm running a Holley 850 on a 1st oversize 427  sideoiler in a 427 Cobra. Sidewinder intake manifold with a 3 degree angle when mounted on the engine, lower at the back. Different from  the GT 350 specs.

How do you measure the correct float height? Do you flip the float bowl upside down and measure the gap between the top of the float and the top of the bowl (ie the top once you flip it over to install it) or do you measure the distance from the bottom of the bowl to the bottom of the float, ie. The depth of the area where the gas will be once installed?

People quote 1/2 inch for the front bowl and 3/8 inch for the back bowl, but that only makes sense if you are measuring the depth of the gas because the back bowl is supposed to be lower to prevent spillover when you brake hard.  The car is used for SAAC open track usually as the Toronto traffic requires a ton of planning to go for a nice drive.

And will the slight mounting angle change these numbers?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

CSX 3000 Series / Ethanol, gas
June 24, 2023, 01:36:52 PM
Up here in the great white north until very recently you could buy 91 octane gas that had no ethanol in it. In November this year Mr. Trudeau decreed that in order to save the environment all gas had to contain up to 10% ethanol. I am running a medium rise cast-iron head 427 side oiler with Hardened valve seats. I have a fuel cell in the car and a single Holley 8 50 double pumper. What are you guys doing when you can't get non-ethanol gas ? Is there some additive that fixes the water and makes it combustible so that it doesn't sit in your fuel tank and float bowls ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Kim.

I wait for the annual in paper.

While we're talking about this, I have an MSD box and distributor. Do I need a ballast resistor?

The Virginia Classic Mustang item is accurate and reliable in my Cobra air car and it has cooked several originals in the past. Brant knows his stuff!

Wanted to Buy / Re: 4 speed shifter assembly
April 20, 2023, 04:17:03 PM
I like the Hurst  shifter better also. Way more positive and less play but no reverse lockout. So I went with the original shifter and changed a bunch of the bushings to hard nylon as well as those two bushings that go underneath the end of the shift lever where it attaches at the top of the mechanism, this removed a lot of the sloppiness. The original bushings on top are rubber and they degrade very quickly.

Hope that helps.
