CSX 3000 Series / LeMans float bowl settings
« on: August 31, 2023, 06:29:33 AM »
Ok Cobra Guru's, I might have forgotten the correct way to do this so I am checking with the brain trust. I
I'm running a Holley 850 on a 1st oversize 427  sideoiler in a 427 Cobra. Sidewinder intake manifold with a 3 degree angle when mounted on the engine, lower at the back. Different from  the GT 350 specs.

How do you measure the correct float height? Do you flip the float bowl upside down and measure the gap between the top of the float and the top of the bowl (ie the top once you flip it over to install it) or do you measure the distance from the bottom of the bowl to the bottom of the float, ie. The depth of the area where the gas will be once installed?

People quote 1/2 inch for the front bowl and 3/8 inch for the back bowl, but that only makes sense if you are measuring the depth of the gas because the back bowl is supposed to be lower to prevent spillover when you brake hard.  The car is used for SAAC open track usually as the Toronto traffic requires a ton of planning to go for a nice drive.

And will the slight mounting angle change these numbers?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

CSX 3000 Series / Ethanol, gas
« on: June 24, 2023, 01:36:52 PM »
Up here in the great white north until very recently you could buy 91 octane gas that had no ethanol in it. In November this year Mr. Trudeau decreed that in order to save the environment all gas had to contain up to 10% ethanol. I am running a medium rise cast-iron head 427 side oiler with Hardened valve seats. I have a fuel cell in the car and a single Holley 8 50 double pumper. What are you guys doing when you can’t get non-ethanol gas ? Is there some additive that fixes the water and makes it combustible so that it doesn’t sit in your fuel tank and float bowls ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Kim.

Shelby American History / Preston Lerner's new book Shelby American
« on: February 10, 2023, 07:58:21 PM »
I just finished Preston Lerner's book "Shelby American The Renegades Who Built  the Cars, Won the Races and Lived the Legend". Who would have thought there was anything left to say? Well, if you want a comprehensive, complete, chronological and pretty objective history, this is the book for you.

I have no financial interest in giving this review, but if you are like me, you have read dozens of versions of the tales. Some say the Brits did it all. Others create heroes and villains that didn't exist. Here is a full, accurate, and unbiased history of a very short, spectacular period where a bunch of young guys (mostly) won the biggest races in the world just by out smarting, out working, and out manoeuvring everybody else. And even though Shelby was no angel, he made it all happen.

Thank you Mr. Lerner. Nicely done.

CSX 3000 Series / Correct specs for 427 S/C and full comp Cobra
« on: July 13, 2021, 06:05:24 AM »
Who knows the correct factory recommendations for the suspension on a 427 S/C with bronze bushings? What is the loaded ride height, camber and toe, front and rear? Goodyear Blue Streaks. I have street specs, but no accurate comp specs.

Any gurus out there?

CSX 3000 Series / Oil for 427 Medium Riser mechanical lifters
« on: June 08, 2021, 01:19:00 PM »
For the past 25 years or so, I have used Pennziol 25w50 Racing oil exclusively in all my flat tappet engine cars. Never a problem. I ate a camshaft once before that when Pennzoil took all the ZDDP out of there street car oil 20w50.
Last year, after Pennzoil was sold to Shell, they discontinued the product and it is now unobtainium.
I did a pile of research on the Internet and decided that Valvoline VR1 Racing oil would be the stuff to use. Didn't want to start mixing my own oil etc. I looked at all the alternatives. There is a lot of junk on the Internet. But I bought $500.00 of the stuff to make the switch.

But just to be safe, I had the old stuff (of which I still have a bottle or two) analyzed along with the VR1.
Low and behold, it has only 65% of the zinc that the Pennzoil has. VR1 1304 ppm, phosphorus 1179 ppm. Pennzoil zinc 2014 ppm, phosphorus 1826 ppm.
I can post the reports as soon as my kid shows me how. But this is no bs, virgin new oil samples. So forget any hype you read elsewhere. "designed for flat tappet engines" etc. All bs.

My question to the gurus is, now what? I know I am not the only one with this issue.

Lisa and I just saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was FANTASTIC.

Now they need to do the sequel, "The Cobra Story".

It will win Oscars. Check it out.
