1965 GT350/R-Model / Re: original hipo lid or not ?

I'll add that hole size for the stud is an easier tell than the contours when photo angles can make seeing the profiles of the lid contours difficult.

Looks like the real McCoy to me

1 of 1 production 65 GT350 ever made with rocker trim and standard shock tower braces, obviously

Not that unusual. I have a spare block cast on 2-1-66, assembled on 2-2-66.

Discussions like this depend on people's interpretation of the phrase "not that unusual" but I'd personally call a 1 day spread pretty unusual..just my own judgement though.

Not saying it's impossible at all, just certainly a LONG way away from the norm from my experience scrutinizing engine vins and date codes.

I'll also throw in there that, in my opinion, a hipo engine would be even less likely to have a 1 day spread since they were almost certainly assembled in batches after periods of casting cores where they would be measured for core shift and the best castings put to the side to build hipo engines out of. Not continuously assembled like on "lowpos".  Was the engine your referring to a hipo or a regular strength?  ;D

Just my opinion here..interesting discussion.

Kind regards,
Vern

We are in the process of getting the tag back to the car it belongs to.

That's a very early reproduction but a cool piece nonetheless.

Just curious is the rear mount battery correct for this car?

What are the round covers on the doors for?

Battery switched to the front, give or take, in the 325-335 region from what I have seen. Only car I've personally owned in that range was 5S327 which was a rear battery...although it hardly counts as a reference for battery location as all drag units got rear batteries...even in 66s when all 4 were carryovers. 351 and 360 were drag units also and had rear batteries despite being late enough that they would have otherwise had front mounted batteries.

Just bought a 66 that has these belts on the drivers side and American Safetys on the passenger side.

I know we have hashed out seat belts before on another thread...but i have recently been seeing American Safetys in an awful lot of early 66 Shelbys lately. Starting to make me wonder if there is more to learn here.

Hi Vern,

Did the belts in the 66 you just bought have the same floor attachment hardware shown in the original post?  I've never seen those on original belts...

Thanks,
Dave

Sorry for the confusion... yes, the drivers side belt in the car has the same attaching hardware as what is pictured but I was not meaning to imply that I felt that they were original to the car.

I was more referencing the passenger side belt which is am American  Safety belt.

In researching 6S750 (has matching American Safety belts in it) for its restoration I just so happened to know the owners of 2 other cars which were right around the same SFM number. When the subject of seat belts came up in conversation...both of the other owners said their cars had American Safety belts just like what I had sent them a picture of...they said they got rid of them in favor of ray browns because that's what everyone said belonged in the cars.  Just bought another considerably earlier 66 and it has an American safety on the passenger side.

I've discussed the topic of American Safety belts with a very well known 65-66 restorer and he claims unequivocally that American Safety belts came in 66s from new but that the theory that all early cars had Ray browns is so prevalent that it probably wasn't worth the fight  ;D I guess, at this point, I am at least open to hearing from people who have cars which have correctly dated American Safety belts in their cars.  It seems incredibly coincidental that, in my very limited research on the topic, that a sample of 5 "early" 66s would had happened to have owners who all replaced their lap belts with the EXACT same American Safety model, finish, etc when there was so much choice out there for racing belts at the time...let alone choices of more "stock" type replacements. Add to that...American Safety, Ray Brown, and Impact were all mfg'd by the same company, right?

Not meaning to stir the pot...just throwing it out there.

Hey Guys,

A fellow forum member informed me through Facebook this morning that Randy Gillis passed away on October 1st.

There was another thread titled something like "where's Randy Gillis" on which a couple posts were made this week about Randy's passing, however, I feel that a guy like Randy deserves a designated thread where we can all acknowledge and admire the bright light that Randy was in this hobby.

Being a Midwest guy, my chances to spend time with Randy were generally limited to conventions but Randy was always one of the top people I most looked forward to spending a little bit of time with. As a young guy in the hobby, Randy was the most gracious, accepting, enthusiastic, and outright positive guys. He always seemed eager to help me in any way that he could...always wanted to teach...always seemed highly interested in what I was up to in this hobby/business.  That sort of enthusiasm goes a long way for young dudes in an older man's hobby who are trying to find a place within it.

His knowledge of these cars and especially their drivetrains was beyond reproach...but more important was his willingness to share that knowledge with those who sought it. His posts on this forum and the old forum are/were always a treat to read.

He was one of my favorite people in the hobby...I'll miss him greatly.

Kind regards,
Vern

I sold the car to the current owner (or at least as of yesterday)... it's never been on eBay although a few other cars in the 400s have been.

The car was a no-sale a few times most notably at Mecum Indy which was a hard sale to sell anything at....horrible results all around at that sale.

Strong price yesterday though!

FWIW... to all the scammers out there... I've already had a few emails from guys saying "I have Original 1965 GT350 "slotted" 15 inch steering wheel and hub and the item is in excellent condition" while attaching an image of a wheel that they pulled off google images....

Please... feel free to not waste my time or your own time.  In fact, your time can be better utilized doing other things... such as, maybe, playing in traffic?

;D

Howdy folks!

Looking for an original 15 inch "slotted" steering wheel for a 1965 GT350 as well as an original S1MS hub.

Looking for a friend with a great, original 65. If anyone has one or both items... we know that the parts won't be cheap. Not looking for repop stuff.

Please reach out via PRIVATE MESSAGE or text message to 913. 687. 1sixsix 8 if you have something!

Pic for attention!

As Tim said above...its not for vendors not "wanting" to produce wheels. For some of the wheels its a lack of available materials to produce the wheels. For other parts specifically...there is currently not enough percieved demand to justify the MfG-ing of the product.

Certainly frustrating but its likely the "new normal" IMO

I would like to formally apologize for missing this "over the top" and glaring detail while the auction was in its draft phase.

I am, after-all, just a dumb ole used car dealer.

I regret that this severe oversight has caused so many of those viewing the auction such mental anguish.

Sincerely,
Vern  ;D
I like your comment but that deal with the over head console brings out a glaring somewhat common occurrence on BaT auctions and that is exactly what are these description editors looking at when they write your ad? Number one there has been  a boatload of 67s  on BaT and not one has ever had an overhead console so how in the heck did it get into the description?  I know it wasn't from you. Call it a hunch but I have come to the conclusion that while this is a car based site many who work for BaT are not car people.

Frankly, as a seller on BaT..I've never been all that concerned with what the description says....real bidders read the comments. That's where all the important information ends up being posted. Additionally, you are correct that the descriptions themselves...they all follow the same basic formula...sort of a canned write up by design by BaT. BaT currently is selling well over 100 cars per day of every different kind. While BaT as a company does have a great deal of "car people" working for them...I think it is an unreasonable expectation for them to have a real authority in every brand of sub category of the hobby.

Great people though and really fun to work with.....they do their best to accurately describe the car while also not "getting into trouble" with what some sellers "want" their description to say vs. what BaT is willing to go out on the ledge for.

Ill send a note to BaT about the stripe issue in the description...dont know if they will change it or not.

Kind regards,
Vern
