Good for you!

Randy:  I am in the concourse judging camp.  But, what you propose is quite interesting; I get it.  Let all of the other draggers fall into their category and have their fun.  Your proposal would be the elite of the christmas tree camp, so go for quality, original drag cars--YES!  We understand it will be a small group of cars, which is just fine.

One of three cars in same DSO group as mine (02139).  Has been in the registry for 30+ years; was owned by the late Mr. James Sole for decades.  I corresponded with him in the early 90s.  Last I knew, it was for sale by a dealer in Ohio for a couple of years back in 2010ish.

Is this a better description?

Shelby # 101, 1968 Shelby GT500 pre-production test vehicle. -When you buy this car, you will not only be getting an extremely rare vehicle, but you will also be getting a history lesson in Shelby pre-production vehicles and engineering test vehicles.  Equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet engine with super-rare Conelec fuel injection system. Only one other vehicle has this factory EFI system. Ford C-6 transmission and special torque-sensitive, locking rear axle. This car has factory air conditioning. Original Sunlit Gold over a black Shelby deluxe, interior. This car has original identification tags and owner history. Comes with rare Ford and Conelec paperwork documenting its rare engineering history.  Car received a Concours Gold Award at Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. Other rare features include, factory, handmade fiberglass parts, pre-production console, one of a kind rear axle mounting, special sound deadner, pre-production taillights and 1969 style tires and shocks.  Fully documented concours restoration by a noted Shelby historian. Owner history and personal accounts of the car are included.  Only two of the three original fuel injection, engineering test vehicles exist and this may be your only opportunity to own a piece of Shelby Automotive history.

Yes, Pete.  I sent you a PM.

I wouldn't recommend trying to repaint details on the tag--I think it is originally a screen printing process??

Other than what has been suggested, no, I don't have a rebuilder recommendation.  I would be trying to locate a very seasoned a/c mechanic/shop that has experience with this type of vintage compressor, who knows what parts to source.  Avoid rookies.

Yes, but DO NOT give that compressor to a rebuilder with your tag; carefully REMOVE THE TAG.  It is secured by two tiny nuts that thread onto tiny studs.  Specify that they CANNOT switch compressor cores on you!  Take closeup photos of all casting characteristics and document your compressor; and tell them you have done so.  Specify that they cannot put any of their own ID markings on the rebuild.

My nut driver set happened to have the correct size socket--size not available right now-sorry.  Use a thin layer of tape, or plastic (sandwich baggie) around/over the nut so your socket does not make a witness mark on that tag surface.

Oh, and specify that all original hardware (fasteners) be re-used--no replacements--because of markings and type.

Besides the C8ZX tag. the correct compressor has casting characteristics that differ from other York aluminum compressors.

On my 68 500 vert (auto & a/c) this is where it routes:

Looking over the carb toward the cowl, there is a hole in the firewall below and between the driver side export brace holes/bolts; This is where the larger vac hose comes through.

Under the passenger side outer export brace hole/bolt is a firewall hole that the smaller hose routes through.

Hopefully this description will help you.  This matches other similarly equipped cars I compared.

Doesn't the 1968 Registry include specification for the distance/gap at the bottom of the stripe, as well as the fender placement??

Foreground has a 66 Mustang convertible on the left; a 66 Fairlane Country Squire station wagon in the center; a 66 Falcon coupe on the right.

In the shadowed background is a much older pickup.

That's the way I see it.
