From personal experience I would say 500 plus horsepower with no problems, because the weak link is the tires not the trans. When the tires are burning, slipping, squealing, there is not too much stress on the trans, where you get into trouble is when you start adding traction devices and slicks. Street cars on street tires no need to worry, even with any gear ratio. The burnouts are just longer between shifts with tall gears. :)

The Tremec was used in the Cobras of 93,94,95 these are the best cars of their generation and all parts on those cars are top shelf. Make sure you know what gen t5 you have some used gear oil and some used atf !

I guess my senses are a little dulled being around the construction trades for so long, the iron workers and the pipe fitters usually use words and phrases that make that word child's play. it aint right, its just a different part of society that has a lot of rough edges and must exist as we know it. I guess that's where the phrase, if it was easy they would have woman and children doing it! you don't here that too much either just amongst the old timers. ;)

If you're buying a new trans, go for the "Z" spec on the T5.  You could also go with a low profile TKO.  That'll handle the torque.  It all depends on how you want to drive and how much you want to spend.

I want to drive it on a regular basis (let's call it a daily driver), but also want to take it on the track here and there.  I'm concerned about the robustness of a T5/Tremec.  Let's assume money is no object.  Do I want an older one?
You want the GT   COBRA   HO-5,0  version typically in late 80s to md 90s production maybe even a little newer. V8 specific not its little brother version.

That makes sense, real men that put their neck on the line in NAM or any other conflict back then used terms like that.Or was that Kopec? Similar to the F-U card. it is funny with your buddies, just not in mixed company.

Well that lewd phrase came from the 80s haven't heard it since, It was a regular phrase used on the left coast by the Valley Dudes, probably didn't sell too many.

I run some t5s in my mustangs and all the small block cars handle it just fine. They made t5s for the 4 and 6 banger cars DO NOT USE THOSE. Find a 302 performance version. A small cut is necessary in the top right corner of the hole for the shifter to come thru. This is necessary when you go up into 5 gear. It is minimal approx. 3/8 must be trimmed no biggie for what you get from the conversion, ALOT of benefits. If budget is not a concern a TKO 6 speed box is available also fits the trans tunnel, I believe modified motor mounts were necessary to drop the whole thing 3/4 to 1 inch for clearance on everything to fit properly. Where there is a will there is a way. :)

z-..... We have had this discussion in the past so there had to have been an evil BFG moment lurking in your past. I realize not everyone one likes the same thing, but for most owners on here that will get the most enjoyment from their cars if it emits a squeal rounding a corner going for some milk at the market, most all tires are good enough. The discussion here with an emphasis on street driver and budget leads us to the econo tire market. If BFG-S were too much Cokers and Pirellis and a host of others as well as upgrading to 15s is out of the question because of cost. :'( That's why it is difficult to offer help when most common tires are out of reach. This is like recommending a motor oil or tooth paste, there are no winners or loosers it just comes down to what they like and their budget. Not trying to be a.. just trying to help! Good luck to those looking for an inexpensive tire for their rides. Just don't expect too much from them.

BFG-s are a great street radial, in fact they are ALL good street tires. Good tires are all around 120.00 tire if that's not in your budget let the sticker price guide you to what makes you happy. :)

Thanks for the pictures Jeff,,,,, I guess I would be referencing a BULGE like the second picture for the clearance of the ring gear. In one of my 68s I have a 9 inch in it like picture # 1 but the axle tubes are full length large diameter, full length not necking down at all. Not sure of the drain plugs will have to look today, would that be a 66 or older possibly?

I have a question regarding 9 inch rearends. What years had the smooth rear end housing without the dimple for the large ring gear, or better put when did they start putting the dimple into the housings 1967? Also when were the axle tubes necked down or all same size across the tubes?
