The Lounge / Re: Shopping for a Daily Driver - What would you get?
« on: February 15, 2019, 12:48:38 PM »
I have a Jeep Trackhawk as my DD.  707hp.  0-60 in 3.3 sec.  1/4 mile in 11.5 sec/117 mph.
Handles and stops great.
Looks enough like a regular Grand Cherokee to be a bit stealthy.
I love smoking Teslas with it.

+1!!! I don't have one but looks like a ton of fun and functional being an SUV

1965 GT350/R-Model / Re: R-model Shock Spacers
« on: February 15, 2019, 12:32:11 PM »
Some were/are concerned about the shock "bottoming out and damaging the valving due to the upper control arm lowering of 1". Too much additional spacer runs the shock into the hood so less than 1" is often used. Bud Moore felt the whole bracket should be raised for improved strength and made aluminum plates to go under the shock bracket itself.
    Randy

I'm curious as to why SA installed the "special" upper shock attaching bolts (with the thinned-out heads) if there is adequate spacing to allow for "riser" plates to be installed. I was under the impression that it was for hood clearance. Any thoughts?

Frank

The Koni-specific bolts weren't for hood clearance, they were used because the "fork" on the upper attachment point of the Koni shocks had less contact surface than the Ford shocks they replaced. The later 66 GT350s with the Ford (Gabriel) shocks did not receive these special bolts, only 65 and pre 6S900? cars did. Photos from VCM.

Parts For Sale / 289-302 Cobra Aluminum Oil Pan - Torrance, CA
« on: February 15, 2019, 02:52:00 AM »
For sale is an excellent condition reproduction Cobra cast aluminum oil pan for 289/302s in 65-73 Ford Mustangs and 65/66 Shelby GT350s. Purchased from Tony Branda Parts and currently selling new for $610; asking $400 + shipping from 90503.

•   7.5 qt total capacity (6.5 qt in pan, 1 qt in filter)
•   Outside fins and “COBRA” polished, like original
•   Features the original design of hinged "trap door" baffles to help control oil slosh, however, one of the two doors is missing. It would be easy to fabricate though.
•   Inside lip has been enlarged for easier installation with oil pickup
•   Casting areas around bolt heads have been smoothed to allow easier installation
•   Pan has been professionally drilled/tapped for ½-NPT (plug included), for use with most oil temp senders
•   Can use stock pickup (included)
•   Can use stock dipstick (not included)
•   Includes drain plug
•   Includes ’66 GT350 correct bolts, which work on any 289/302. However, using studs or Torx/Allen-head fasteners would work best since it’s difficult to get a socket or wrench on many of the bolts, with this pan’s design.
•   Uses standard Ford 289 oil pan gasket set (4-piece) (not included)

Thanks!
Brent

Replicas and Tribute / Re: Cam Suggestions
« on: February 13, 2019, 06:54:33 PM »
Why not spend a bit more and have a cam custom ground? Especially since you already have the valvetrain, you can have a cam ground based on the lift limit of your springs and the rest of the specs built for your planned use.

SAAC Forum Requests / Block a Forum
« on: February 11, 2019, 11:39:14 PM »
Hi,

I see in our Profile settings that we can block particular members but is it possible to block all postings from a particular Forum? For example, there are some Regional Forums which post excessively and I have zero interest in; when I click on the link "Show unread posts since last visit" at the top of the SAAC Forum, I'd prefer if there was a way to block those regions' postings from even appearing. Any chance?

Thanks,
Brent

1965 GT350/R-Model / R-model Shock Spacers
« on: February 06, 2019, 12:21:44 PM »
I was recently in a discussion with another SA enthusiast and on his car he'd installed approx 1/2" spacers in-between the upper shock mount and the tower bracket. I've also seen OVC Mustang's replica r-models with this mod. This enthusiast stated it was a Phil R. mod for r-models but it's something I haven't seen documented anywhere in the past.

I can see the benefit of moving up the shocks, if you've lowered the car, to restore them to their optimal operational range and prevent bottoming out but I'm more interested if it was a mod done in the 60s or something created recently.

Thanks!

The Lounge / Re: 5S089 for sale details... I don't get it
« on: January 31, 2019, 09:29:45 AM »
Even if the front shock towers weren't cut out, the ad still doesn't address that the car was a competition model for years. Were the fender wheel-well openings cut out, was a roll bar welded in, were additional holes drilled for the electric fuel pumps, etc. The ad is misleading with its claim of being "always a well-kept, unmodified car" but spending a decade plus as a modified r-model.

From Stephen's ad:
"This was always a well-kept, unmodified car, and the owner commissioned Tony Conover to complete a very comprehensive rotisserie and concourse-level restoration in the mid 2000’s, returning the car both cosmetically and mechanically to like-new."

This sentence would mislead me to believe that the car spent its life in like-original condition and only required a restoration to bring it up to concours condition.

Los Angeles Region SAAC / Re: Super Bowl Sunday event
« on: January 30, 2019, 01:14:54 AM »
I'm an LASAAC member and they mentioned nothing about any events on Superbowl Sunday in their email blast last week. Additionally, their calendar doesn't show any events on Feb 3rd.
https://www.lashelbyclub.com/calendar

COCOA of OC and SoCalSAAC (San Diego) also don't have events listed this weekend so not sure what you're referring to.

Up For Auction / Re: 6S961 on Ebay
« on: January 25, 2019, 12:39:49 PM »
100K and 100+ for a decent restoration? That would move it out of market value.

Maybe not. Hagarty tracks classic car sales, including many through auctions which isn't always realistic of the entire market, but they're pricing '66 GT350s in concours condition at $258k!! Carryovers demand a 35% premium over regular '66 values.

https://www.hagerty.com/apps/valuationtools/1966-Shelby-GT350

Here's their pricing theory:

Edit: noticed this car is a Hertz and Hagerty values these slightly lower than regular '66s but they're still at $238k.

Awesome find!

If you go up one level, there's another photo set simply titled Mustang which has additional SA and racing photos:

Los Angeles Region SAAC / Re: Annual Peterson Shelby Cruise In
« on: December 14, 2018, 03:13:05 PM »
This would be so much better if there was a section for the original Shelbys! There are tons of newer cars 2007+.

Great Idead they could easily separate the cars and not because I don’t like and respect the newer ones (I also have a 2007 Shelby) but because many visitors like one generation over the other and because they are so different cars. If you are in the grocery market you don’t find the peas in the cereal section.
Every Petersen cruise-in I've attended has only had personnel directing which level of the parking structure to drive to, otherwise it's completely open parking. Not saying they couldn't get more staff to direct cars but being that they listed it as a cruise-in, it'll probably remain first come.

For those looking for a hotel, I can't recommend a specific spot but I'd definitely look to the West/Northwest of Petersen, as I used to live to the east of there and it's not great. Definitely wouldn't park my car anywhere I couldn't keep it in sight east of Petersen. Additionally, Sunday mornings around the museum the traffic isn't bad so if you're a few miles away it won't take long to get to the cruise-in.

I'll take photos and upload here of the event.

Cheers!

Brant,

You guys are making quality progress on this car!

Question - I thought with an earlier/mid 66, like 6s933, that the washer fluid reservoir bag would be the black/white version, not the gold lettering version you've used? When is the approx Shelby/Ford switchover point or why'd you go with the gold version?

Thanks!
Brent
