some other "in period" race coverage has poor dubbed in engine audio, this tape includes what sounds to me as authentic !
enjoyed the sound of the 7 liter engines as they accelerate out of the corners, the Chaparral has a distinctly different exhaust note from the Ford.

yes, the Dearborn city library is just east of FoMoCo HQ, and on the S side of Michigan ave, the photo perspective captured those 2 nearby structures.

ran across a couple photos from a Motor City Region meeting circa 1976 or 1977 at Dearborn library,
an unusual finish cobra with a tortured history !

Appeals / Re: Looking for Ray Whitfield Ford MI
January 29, 2023, 02:30:02 PM
Ray Whitfield Ford on Telegraph Rd in Taylor MI  is now Taylor Ford, different ownership,  happened years ago.

Telegraph was the westside "Woodward Ave"  cruising venue back in the day :)

Thanks for sharing this video JIM!!!!

It does appear to be taken around May 1964 before Shelby was involved in the GT40 program.

After watching again, @ 6:15 it appears the chassis has damage to the LH fuel sponson (rocker), and roof appears deformed upward,  possibly GT/102 that crashed at Le Mans trials April 1964.
then @ 6:52 they are working on 3 chassis @ FAV,  GT/102, GT/103, GT/104 that were sent to Le Mans
@7:07 the rear body now has ducktail spoiler that showed up at Nürburgring, one car has a center "rally stripe across the roof, GT/102 for P. Hill / Nürburgring ??
@7:40 the car has the Nürburgring / Le Mans revised nose/inlet/lights,  then follows sequences from Nürburgring.
@ 9:30 it's moved to cars #10, #11 & #12  which are the door numbers worn at Le Mans.

that's my analysis :)

I've never seen this footage before, lots of historical graphic images to examine!

the video title is misleading, it's 1st part is the only segment from Abby panels,
there is quite a bit from FAV build, likely GT/101 ~ GT/103
then moves onto Nürburgring, Le Mans and ends with quite a bit of footage of burned out GT/104,

You can catch a glimpse of CSX2287, John Wyer, Eric Broadley, Phil Hill, Lunn, McLaren, Ginther.

Many cars that were ordered destroyed after they had left the control of the manufacturer never actually got scrapped. Of course the story will always be we destroyed it - you wouldn't want to say we screwed Ford and kept the car.

I know very well a SAAC member on here that during their tenure at Ford Truck engineering back in the late 70's may have liberated components from a batch of cars including Pantera & Capri's that all had spray painted on the hoods "Scrap", that were parked in the infield of the Dearborn test track !

That provided a leather covered reclining seat for my $300 "daily driver" back when reclining seats were rare.

At this point in time to the best of my recollection I can neither confirm or deny the prior statements.

It is my understanding that experimental chassis 'glue' broke free (due to vibration) causing the Miles car to break apart.
Heard this years ago from a (now) deceased FOMO race photographer.

I've read many theories over the years, another is they switched to low profile 16" wheels/tires and it disturbed the ground effects air flow altering the handling as Ken attained top speed on the back stretch and approaching the braking zone for turn 9?

I would suspect if anyone had a knowledgeable theory it would have been P Remington.

If any one ever reached a conclusion it's not public knowledge.

just for consideration, D7DC-3A196-AA is a Granada part from 1977.
Granada would be the last of the Fairlane / Falcon style steering system platforms as the next generation platforms were Fox body platform rack & pinion steering.

Yes, al three photos are from the same internet source at the Texas State Fair.

I beleive that event was in October 1966 and the GT40 is GT-104 restored for Ford by Kar Kraft.

GT/105 ??  I recall GT/105 had the "Nassau" nose, halibrand wheels.
I  just don't know what nose GT/104 received when they "refurbished" is post SAI?  The more typical MK-I production version?

Hey Ron, Why can't SAAC collect all these interviews and post them in one place? I think there are even historical interviews with Ken Miles that could be included, like the one on "The Cobra Story" although you would need permission for that one. I really enjoyed the Rick Kopec and Drew Serb interviews in the annual.

Kim

I printed many and put them in a binder :)

Up For Auction / Re: Fake Shelby for auction
December 09, 2022, 01:21:35 PM
I'm no expert to the level others are here,
but i have strong suspicions the door tag (reproduction) codes don't reflect how the car was built !

Why would a Dearborn built car be sold to the San Jose district when the Milpas plant was churning out cars by 1966?
C engine code 289 2v with a 4 speed is not common,  more likely a 3 sp. or C4 auto
Locking diff axle with 289 2v, ....... I'm not buying that either .....  just say'in

Rich,
I would suggest the clay design work and the line art concept is the design work Ford initiated PRIOR to the discussions with Broadly and the Lola GT-MK6.
Le Mans was June 15~16th 1963 when the Ford contingent including Shelby, Lunn and Wyer observed the Lola run in the race.

I believe the Ford-Broadly contract discussions occurred post Le Mans, with the relationship beginning around August 1963?

So once the joint venture was arranged then they began to fit the Lola chassis design into the Ford Dearborn body design, and using the 2 Lola chassis to incorporate the Arning suspension design while the FAV-Lola design was completed.  Many describe the process as Ford took the Lola and made some modifications,
I rather describe it as a cross-pollicization i.e.  Broadly + Lunn + Dearborn Design Studio = Ford GT.

Interestingly the version #S-6428-5 dated 6-11-63  has the flip up cockpit canopy, rear side mounted radiators and flip up headlamps ( ala Mustang I design), and the rear chassis doesn't have any Lola influence,   yet.  This design shows more Lunn influence than Broadly, IMHO.

Not sure where this would fit ? This was in the wheels section of our local rag,  Interesting numbers, are they correct ?

Does any one know the numbers for regular Mustang fast backs (not Shelbys)  for '67-'70

Mike

Mike, is this what you're looking for?
