Concours Talk / Re: springs restoration
February 18, 2020, 07:17:20 PM
John, typically the front coil springs were painted black on Dearborn 69 Mustangs. Verify your original finish before you restore. A good place to start is under the spring rubber. Black paint is concours correct per MCA & SAAC judging.

Concours Talk / Re: Mobile Concours Judging Trailer

MCA judges the Thoroughbred class on a four post lift at Grand National, MCACN judges the Pinnacle(THB) cars on 4 post lift and Mid America judges the Concours cars on a four post lift. Nothing new in top concours classes. MCA and MCACN are judged at show site during show for all to observe. Nothing new really?

Mike and Joe, I would start by getting advice from Jeff at Tri City, as they are one of top restoration shops in country as I'm sure you already know. Jeff is a great resource you can trust.

 Concours is on Friday.

By the plug boots and date codes possibly 351 Windsor. Boss 302 & Cleveland heads heads did not use angled boots. Hard to tell by your photos.

Concours Talk / Re: Emblems -- All Years

Bill, reproduction parts are typically no deduction in SAAC  concours Div.II or MCA trailered concours. Definitely a deduction in SAAC premiere (DIV. I) or MCA Thoroughbred.

Bill, It's recommended to document original markings & colors on your car especially if they are not "typical". If judges question originality you have pictures. During judges introduction to car owner the lead judge will ask the owner if there is anything not typical about the car that should be discussed before judging begins. Undercarriage primer color is a good example.
If a judge cannot see something (lack of Lubriplate on original FoMoCo brake shoes ) the owner is not required to have pictures of the parts not visible during judging. Many owners/restorers do take pictures of everything, however not required in SAAC or MCA judging for parts not visible during judging.

It should be noted the 1968 wires were installed differently...different plant and year

Different calipers and caliper brackets also on 69-70.

Technically The S8MS-1132-A are wheel covers rather than hubcaps. ;)

Generic would not be concours correct in Div. 1 Premiere class. I would expect most judges would expect to see at least a couple plugs with the Diamond & MP logo.

1967 Shelby GT350/500 / Re: GT350 9-inch Rear Axle
January 04, 2019, 06:48:53 PM
I have a friend who worked at the Sterling axle plant . He contacted me through MM many years ago and asked how I figured out the markings on the rear axle assembly. I replied, I duplicate what I find during disassembly and document with pictures. He also explained the function of orange strap on the parking brake cable. There was a code book the Sterling assemblers used for quality control and identification. Different colors on marker pens for various shifts etc. There were red, green and white paper axle tags on tape roll (1st,2nd, 3rd shift)? No he has not found any lunch pail 981B tape rolls yet. I have figured out what many markings mean from the  info supplied. I have not been granted  permission to share and feel he should publish the article himself, which I believe is coming.
Randy G, I love your comment. That's the first time I have been praised for my handwriting. I know the customer quite well and he did not prefer I drag the axle assembly around the shop on the floor a few laps for a little Dearborn patina. Thanks again for the Blue Streaks.
Unfortunately I believe too much emphasis is put on paint codes and stickers etc. on many restorations. These final details do not make the restoration as some seem to believe. Believe me it took a lot more time to prep the parts and assemble the axle assembly than it did to scribble a few numbers.  Paint codes and stickers do not make up for incorrect parts and average restoration workmanship. Does a car with no orange peel really deserve a paint OK stamp? Lets not loose perspective.

Have to wonder why they keep referring to the B9 as a 429 CobraJet

THE # 2 copy of Ford invoice refers to the Boss 429 as the 429 4V CID Cobra Jet HO. I think they copied it from the invoice?

The door sill plates are for convertible with 76 prefix in the part number.
