Was Ron Butler also the first guy to make a fiberglass Cobra kit car?

At least that was what I read in the magazines in the mid to late 70's.

From what I remember, Butler bought the assets of Steven Arntz's Cobra replica business. Arntz was one of the first Cobra kit manufacturers in the mid 1970s. Allied Industries had made fibreglass Cobra bodies long before that, but I don't think they sold "Cobra kits" in the way we mean them now.

Ken Young had a 289 Cobra around 75-6 that had a full fiberglass body on it. Maybe Allied was mentioned, I don't remember? It was a late car as I remember. A CSX 25... something.

There was some discussion about "a company" offering fiberglass replacement bodies.
At the time I don't even think Arntz was building replicas yet.

Maybe Ned can shed some light on this?

I believe Arntz made the first complete Cobra replica kit, while various manufacturers offered fiberglass bodies as repair parts before that. I do not know who made the body on Ken Young's former car, CSX 2506.

That was the only one with that particular exhaust setup. And it was on both sides.

And CSX 3111 was parked right behind 2507.

For Honker: (Post #92) The car pictured is COB 6113, a right-hand-drive "AC 289 Sports." And yes, it is still owned by Gerry Scheberies. You'll find data for it and every other coil-spring Cobra, as well as photos for almost all of them, in SAAC's soon-to-be-released Coil Spring Cobra Registry.

For anyone keeping track, the black car above is CSX 3010 and the green one is CSX 3261.

For anyone keeping track, that's CSX 2565 in post #86 and CSX 2539 in #87.

Hank Williams' 289 really isn't green. It was painted Princess Blue many years ago, and the clear coat is turning yellow. Now you'll remember from 2nd grade art class, blue + yellow = Green!

It's not as if there has never been a green 427 Cobra with a red interior...but it wasn't factory, and it didn't stay that way for long.

I have a feeling the entry in the production list was an error. That, or it was changed, as the AC Cars invoice to Shelby American for CSX 3336 lists a green car "with black trim."

Maybe this shot will work?  A photo of CSX 3336 from the online Registry, taken next to the same camper:
Wow, thanks Ned.  My understanding is that is/was the only 427 car with red interior, and one of only two that did not have black interior.

You are correct: the AC "Bible" (the production history) lists 3336 as being green with red trim.

The AC Registry shown in Trevor Legate's book lists it as Green with Red trim, 8/12/66. I have no idea if that is correct and how it was shipped from England.

Absolutely the first I've heard of it. Interesting. Is this a SAAC function?

Authorized by SAAC. Uses same hack Registrar.

What's the "online Registry"?

Visit www.cobraexperience.org   It's the SAAC Registry updated continually and with multiple photos.

Never heard of any 427s with a red interior, and none of the 3336 photos show it; the seats are black in our photos.

Answer for Honker: Mike, we have no record of a Shepard as having owned a 289 Cobra, so accessing the car that way is a dead-end. :(
