1965 GT350/R-Model / Re: Awaken your Ken Miles in you.
« on: February 22, 2020, 02:36:31 PM »

I wonder how many (if any) they've sold other than the demos.
Even in today's market I know of 65 GT-350s which  could be bought and brought to this spec for this money-or very closely thereabouts.

These OVC cars are very nice, very well done, gussied up Mustangs with illusory provenance. Why not own a real SFM5S with a clean SAI title that perhaps was never destined to be an auction queen?

Somewhat surprised if indeed a no sale in Europe. This car could be picked-on in a concours analysis but it was reasonably priced IMO.
I would think this car would be an outstanding platform to get an HTP and participate in some of the 'Peter Auto' events.
Spa and LMC coming up.

Strange they’re highlighting those keys.

1966 Shelby GT350/GT350H / Re: This is the 66 GT350 of Airplanes

Chino, wow thats brings up some memories. Flew in their airshow both 1984 and 1985 as a active duty pilot out of El Toro. Ed Maloney, Frank Mormillo great guys, Frank Sanders, a spectacular airshow pilot, loved the 65 GT350 and always let me park in his hanger. all dead now...long time ago..........

1965 GT350/R-Model / Re: 1965 VIN’s

I have encountered the *opposite*. Two years ago at the Pismo Beach Saturday morning cruise there was a basic white 271hp 4sp 2+2, rough, complete and unrestored with a VIN of 5R09K217XXX. The owner was unaware and I did not play it up. That is right in the middle of the May 65 SFMs.

(thank you J_Speegle)

GT40 - Original/Mk V / Re: What is driving a gt40 like?
« on: January 28, 2020, 01:41:23 AM »
An SPF40, with an accurate tub and roof, especially in the RH drive, full mechanical shift linkage variant is .... faithful. They are no hokie kit car to be sure.
Its faults are the accurately reproduced faults of a GT40. It is my understanding that you have to want to like it and it won’t disappoint. It is not a 2020 M series BMW.
The hypocenter of the SPF40 world is http://www.olthoffracing.com and Rick at https://www.timemachineauto.com/

Regarding the fuel tanks: the SPF40 is equipped w tanks. Bladders are a $6800 upcharge.

Good Luck

To pick up upon 2112’s pic showing just how small a GT40 is:

Agreed, they were not at all sequential.
Here's a specific example:
Bo's car 5S275 is 64 VINs 'junior' to my car 5S339, however my car was delivered to SAI before his, May 9 v May 13.
There is a very good chance that 5S339 had an earlier FOMOCO VIN than 5S275.

These examples are all over the place: 5S479 was delivered before 5S259 and thus may well have a FOMOCO VIN hundreds of numbers 'older' and so on.

Yes, I was a member of COCOA OC and yes I knew Randy Hermans. He and Jim 'recruited' me to COCOA OC from a COCOA LA meeting at Galpin Ford 1974~.
Randy had an outstanding 65 350 then which he sold and then got another shortly thereafter. Very nice guy, I seem to recall he was aspiring to dental school ?? at the time.
Man, that was a long time ago. Thanks for bringing that up!

That's Jim Wallace next to Gordon.
Jim was the President of COCOA Orange County 1975.
He had street driving privileges in the Coupe when owned by Shoen and even brought one to the monthly meeting at Pacific Stereo/ Anaheim via the I-5 Fwy!
Carroll used to show up at the meetings just to kick tires and make small talk. Totally approachable.
He was a Chili salesman.

SAAC Forum Discussion Area / Re: Intake question
« on: January 22, 2020, 01:25:01 PM »
Sadly the S1MS was a manifold of poor materials, poor design and poor performance. Early well intentioned attempts at enhancing its performance were ineffectual and it was quickly superseded by a sequence of  similar, but improved, dual plane manifolds by Shelby and the aftermarket. This appears to be detritus from that period.
The S1MS was an Offenhauser gravity sand casting of poor aluminum integrity, also the design was not robusted to compensate for this poor materials quality. It appears the posted intake has had its rear ears broken off and ‘repaired’. This is sadly common and that design is in no mans land at 10-15 ftlbs tq. Expert repair and reskinning is available ($$), but then what do you have?
The holes have been enlarged / hogged out so be careful on port alignment and barely snug those last two bolts!
On a 260 this intake may well diminish that engine’s efficiency.
The S1MS does live on in lore though, and it is of value to a restorer uninterested in performance.
(If on a budget there are a lots of F4Bs cheaply available)
Same intake broken and repaired/reskinned:

Save for this singular notable exception (congrats to buyer & seller) looks like a near total collapse for early SAI cars at all three auctions this year.

Replicas and Tribute / Re: better option than detroit locker?
« on: January 10, 2020, 10:15:24 PM »
My original 65 Detroit Locker didn't break. It fell apart. And my car was only 10 yrs old and hadn't had any abuse. Happened getting on the San Bernardino Fwy at Tyler 1975. Definitely wasn't cool. These things were Furnace Brazed 'together' with schlock quality. Useless. I posted pics of it on old forum, still got it here somewhere. I had another 'gen-one' which I ran for a while, then switched to a Traction-Loc which is still in the car, never a bit of trouble.
The Locker: Street driving a PIA. Slow u-turns were a fight until it clunked.
Its sitting on the shelf w my original T-10M-1. Another useless anachronism!!

I love the 1965 GT-350 and have had the pleasure of driving one almost my whole life, and I respect the purity of the concours cars, but many of the now-vaunted early parts simply didn't hack the load of hi-performance street, weekend racer duty.
There's a reason why radiators, fuel pumps, fans, intakes, M-1 transmissions, etc are now 'rare'....and it wasn't because they were good!

HEAR HEAR! Coralsnake!!
This is a car forum, let’s keep it as that.
Most of us have ridiculous political opinions anyway, let those who want to vent their spleens go to political forums and fight endless fights there.
