1969 Shelby GT500 console wiring harness question
« on: June 13, 2020, 09:32:07 AM »
I am installing a new center console wiring harness (from Alloy Metal), but do not have a wiring diagram (schematic) for the harness. I have one wire that I do not know what it goes to on this harness. It is on the gauge end of the harness, has an eyelet (for a screw??), and is coded green with a black tracer. The old harness (which was cut and butchered) does not have this wire. Does anyone know where this goes? And if you know the center console harness, I would also like to verify which wires connect to which post on the gauges.  Planning on purchasing new gauges from Branda, and understand that they are a little different than the stock gauges. And the final question, does anyone make, or have the Shelby schematics for all the harnesses?  I am putting new harnesses throughout the entire car because the thought of a potential fire, due to an old faulty harness, scares me.

If you are installing the console wiring I would suggest using some dielectric grease on the contacts at the large plugs for the switches to help make sure that they are COMPLETELY pushed together. The large plugs if not pushed all the way together and making complete contact inside causes  resistance and heat. Those plugs have a bad reputation of heating up and melting . Smoke first and then fire in you don't catch it. That melting of plugs is the reason for many cobbled up console wiring harness's found in 69/70 Shelby's. Prior to the repro harness being offered a repair of the harness that was the only course of action . Many times the repair was not done well.

Trace the wire to the other end of the harness and see what it's connected to there.

I did that and the only other green with black tracer is a pin plug in that is open next to the eyelet connector.

That green/black bullet wire connects to the oil pressure wiring lead from under the dash, the eyelet to the gauge.

Ok, I am finally back to working on the console wiring.  Does anyone have a source for a wiring diagram for this?  I have the supplement 1969 Shelby manual which has diagrams, but not for the center console.  I noticed that the original gauges had an open hole for the bulbs, but the new gauges use the twist in pot type of bulb.  Since the new replacement harness is set up for the original style, what is the best way to modify the components to make them operable?

A picture (or more) is worth a thousand words.  Thanks, that really helped.
