68 and 69/70 wooden handles are typically the same. The difference in color sometimes has to do with it being made from out of real wood . A natural wood when finished could vary in shade somewhat from one handle to the next . I have seen some that were lighter and some very dark . They typically were in a shade range comparable to the picture. Also the oil from ones hands can darken a handle.

Are the wood handles used only on late 68 shelbys (KRs)?  Black handles for early 68 shelbys?

In 1968, typically the handles are later in the year. The plastic handles are common at the start of production. I would expect the wood handle on GT500 KRs.
